Cavaliers preparing for a big deal?

Post#1 » by heathmalc » Sun Nov 15, 2009 3:06 pm

There have been rumors floating around since August that the Cavaliers may be interested in acquiring Goldenstate SF/SG Stephen Jackson. There were rumors last year (at the deadline), that the Cavaliers were interested in trading for Clipper's center Chris Kaman.

Indeed, both rumors turned out to be true, and it has been reported that the Cavaliers are still keeping an eye on the SJax situation in Goldenstate. In-addition to that, the Cavaliers are said to be looking/watching(?) for big men who can shoot the ball.

With Clipper Coach/GM Mike Dunleavy apparently in job-trouble, and ownership said to be looking to add to the money they will have available next season, it appears that Chris Kaman could once again be someone the Cavaliers may trade for.

The Clippers only have two players with more than a year on their contract that takes-up significant cap space: Baron Davis and Chris Kaman. Baron Davis is 30 years old, and makes 12+ million for 4 more years (after this one). So, Davis is not likely going to get traded, as there aren't many teams in the market for a pg that is his age, and doesn't offer much outside the ability to move quickly...and that wont last much longer. Chris Kaman, on the other hand, is still young, and averages about 20/10, and his contract is very good at 10.5 million with 3 years remaining.

Here is a scenario that I came up with that would seem to make sense (assuming that the Clippers are still willing to trade Kaman).

    To Cavaliers:
    Chris Kaman
    Stephen Jackson
    Acie Law

    To Goldenstate:
    Delonte West
    Marty Collins
2010 2nd round pick from Clippers
    3 Million Cash from Cavaliers

    To Clippers:
    Zydrunas Illgauskas
    Darnell Jackson
    2010 1st round pick & 2012 1st round pick (top 10 protected) from Cavaliers

Why each team may do this trade:

Cavaliers:
The Cavaliers add another big who can shoot the ball very well, and also plays defense and rebounds. Kaman not only helps this year, but becomes the Cavaliers' Big man for the foreseeable future. Stephen Jackson adds what the Cavaliers have missed since Delonte has been gone, and although he is starting to get older, and has 3 more years (after this one) on his contract, he should remain valuable to the Cavs throughout the term of the contract, although he would likely move to the bench by next season; if not right from the start. Acie Law adds the an extra pg, who is young and is a short-term contract.

Clippers:
The Clippers add 11 million to their cap for next summer, and immediately become a big player for possible free-agents. They have a lot of young talent, and they have Baron....plus they are in California... These three things make them a possibility for any FA who is considering switching teams.

The Warriors
GoldenState gets more for Jackson than they probably could have hoped for. West is a low risk/high reward player, who if he gets back to playing, would be a steal....plus the 3 million they get from the Cavaliers virtually pays for the rest of his season. Marty Collins is an expiring contract, thus the Warriors essentially add 5 million to next summer's cap space, grab 2010's 2nd round pick from the Clippers, which should be pretty high, they get rid of SJax and his bloated contract, and they get a free shot at Delonte West.

I don't know. It seems like a risky move.

Kaman won't hold up this kind of play for long.

Stephen Jackson is still an awful shooter.

this trade will be awsome for the Cavs, they get a young center who can
play PF next to Shaq and is a very good rebounder.
+ Stephen Jackson and Ice Law = Excellent

I still think it's too early to be making any deals.

Golden State needs more in this deal. We need to deal Jackson, but getting back that garbage isn't enough. Add a big that Golden State can use. All of the Warrior bigs are hurt except for Mikki Moore. Even Randolph is dinged up.

Mardy Collins is no help what-so-ever. Switch him into Craig Smith and we might have something.

How about the Dubs get back Darnell Jackson, Delonte West (who won't siut up for the W's), and Craig Smith.

Give the clips the 2nd rounder you were gonna give us. Z for Kaman makes sense from a money standpoint. They don't need Darnell, they've got Griffen, Camby, and Deandre Jordan who all need minutes.

Answer me this though....How do Kaman and Shaq co-exist? Kaman deserves to start wherever he's at. Plus you'd still have Anderson V.

I think the Clips would trade Camby before they'd trade Kaman. And especially not for the crap you'd be sending out. You could argue that for Jackson, but not for Jackson AND Kaman.

Apparently Okafor may be had for only an expiring...

Okafor is just more of what we already have. He's not really an offensive threat

I actually think Varejao is better than Okafor. Okafor is just one of those overrated big guys who is fairly mediocre and doesn't add much to a team. Chris Kaman however is a good player. Stephen Jackson is an interesting acquisition. We don't need a shooter, we have plenty of those on the team. But with his poor shot selection he could end up hurting our offense. On the other hand he's a good defensive and intangibles player, and he might excel playing next to Lebron.

Okafor is someone that can be the starting Center for us for the next 5 years. He isn't great on offense but he is a good defender and rebounder. I would have no problem getting him and I would much rather trade for him than Kaman.

I really want David West though. I think he would be a perfect PF to put next to Shaq and with LeBron.

I'd rather have Varejao than Okafor, and there is no chance of wanting both on the same roster. $18 million tied up in two centers that have little or no offensive games, no thanks.

Kaman is one of the best rebounders in the league and a much better offensive player than Okafor. Okafor really doesn't have any offense, just garbage buckets and an occasional 10 foot shot when he's open.

Killer timing... They could have waited at-least a day to let more people b**ch about the trade idea.

Anyway, I still think the Cavs make a deal for a 2/3 and possibly a big. Probably not anytime soon now that Jack is in Charlotte (although he could still be traded -again- tomorrow).

Anyone see the Cavs taking a flier on A.I.???

Seeing the deal that they ended up making this comment was hero. They got vlad radmonovich and raja bell in this deal...if that is not garbage I do not know what is. Not your fault though, really it just shows how awesome warriors management is. Its also good we didnt make a deal cause we would have definitely been overpaying.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Warriors want to move Raja Bell, and he fits the need for a physical perimeter defender that can knock down the occasional 3.

The time to get Kaman was over the summer. We got Shaq instead.

Two moves that I can see Cleveland making are for a starting SG and/or a younger center. Teams that are not rebuilding, and may want expirings in return:

Philidelphia
Detroit
Washington
Utah
LAC
New Orleans
Well at least we're not Detroit!
