Vilma wants out of 3-4 scheme.
http://www.realgmfootball.com/src_wiret ... _4_scheme/
As a Jets fan I hate to see this, but it was inevitable. I think he wants to stay a Jet, it's just the system. Now I think he'll be on his way out, as much as I'd love for him to stay and how much I like Mangini as a coach, I think Mangini will be too stubborn to change back to a 4-3. So, I'll say it now....
Any takers?

Put Vilma in the cover 2 scheme or the base 4-3 defense and he is your best middle line backer in the game today. I honestly expect the Jets to move him in his last year of his contract which is this offseason. Davis Harris is a perfect fit for the system unlike Vilma. However what is fair value for him?
Im going to use the Champ Bailey-Clinton Portis as a base of any offer. I do know there were the rumors of the Lions and Redskins offering their draft picks last draft but I dont know if it was just internet talk or actually legit. So with that said what offers are there?

There was actually legit rumors about a Redskins-Jets trade involving Vilma this past offseason:
Redskins get:
Jonothan Vilma
Jets first round pick (overall 20?)
Jets get:
Ladell Betts
Redskins #6 overall pick
This was before NYJ landed Thomas Jones and Washington got London Fletcher. I'd be open to Vilma in Washington if we didn't have London. Too bad we just can't replace London with Vilma when A. Fletcher is one the main leaders of this team and B. HB Blades looks like a big time steal

And Landry's turned out to be a helluva pick. No way I'd do that trade.
How about Vilma being traded to the Bengals in exchange for Chad Johnson?

Johnson isnt a "mangini" type player so even if the Bengals offered the Jets would be stupid and not take the deal and WR isnt really a need. Cotch and Coles are one of the best duos in the league.
BAF Suns
Chris Paul / Patrick Beverley / Shamorie Ponds
Buddy Hield / Timothy Luwawu / Stanley Johnson
Kendrick Nunn / Matisse Thybulle / Darius Miller
RJ Barrett / Kyle Kuzma / Dwayne Bacon
DeAndre Jordan / Kenrich Williams / DJ Wilson

Yup. Landry is a beast. I'd rather have Landry, Fletcher, Blades and Betts than Vilma and Alan Branch (the pick if the trade happened). We were close to making two horrible trades, first with the Jets then with the Bears.

The Jets very nearly traded him to Chicago for Lance Briggs this past summer too, except they (CHI) didn't want to swap 2nd rounders. There were some contractual issues holding that up too.
Detroit never seriously pursued him once they heard the asking price. I can guarantee you they are certain to try again this summer, and from what I've heard Shaun Rogers might be avaiable for the right price.
I agree with Manhattan--put Vilma in the middle of a 4-3 and he's got a chance to be special. He's not a great tackler but few guys come in and finish off plays like Vilma, and his speed and coverage skills are tailor-made for Cover 2. Really most of the Jets D is that way but they have a coaching issue there. I absolutely think he's done as a Jet. Hard to say how the knee impacts his value but it's fair to say it probably screws the Jets out of at least 10 draft spots of value.

I don't believe the Bengals are going to move Chad Johnson; I think they're much more likely to axe Marvin Lewis and rebuild around Palmer/Johnson/Housh. Mike Brown & the Bengals cheapskate management absolutely will not give up on a player who moves merchandise and sells seats the way Ocho Cinco does. Remember this is a team that still sells Icky Shuffle T-shirts in the stadium--when they get a golden goose they try to get all their eggs out of it.
I also think Ocho Cinco might not like playing in NYC as much. He clearly likes being the big fish in the small pond year-round. He's the biggest celeb in Cincy; he'd get lost in the myriad stars and teams in the Big Apple. I think he also knows he's not going to find a better QB than Carson Palmer to throw it to him. Just my thoughts, but I don't really think that's a trade that works out for either guy (or team).

Rogers and Robertson would be deadly to have up the middle if we did indeed switch out of the 3-4 but if we dont Rogers makes no sense really. I cant see the Jets going out to get him since he is not a "Mangini" character guy. He is a hell of a player though.
Falcons have some interesting things I would be interested in, but too bad football dont work like that. I do like Blalock, Hall and Houston. Though it would be the first round pick that would be required in any deal.

And now this comes out...
http://www.realgmfootball.com/src_wiretap_archives/6390/20071107/jets_vilma_may_need_two_years_to_recover/
They were talking about this on Sirius this morning, and Pat Kirwin said he was told by two different teams' doctors that Vilma is going to need microfracture on both knees to correct a genetic defect. It's some form of osteoarthritis where the bottom of the femur doesn't grow enough and causes the joint to not come together right.
That tells me that 2008 is a wash for Vilma and his career is in serious jeopardy. I can see a guy coming back from one microfracture and favoring the other leg a bit until the repaired one is back to speed, but with both being done that can't not rob him of serious mobility and speed, which is basically the only assets he's got to begin with.

Honestly at this point I dont even know what to believe when it comes to Vilma. Conflicting comments on why he was brought out of the game in Cincinnati. Vilma never mentioned anything about this on his paid job at the WFAN. Then im reading rumors that the Ravens want Vilma in the offseason. Im just going to let this situation play out until the end...
