MIN/NO/MEM
Trade must be done in two pieces (with the Gomes/AI swap being at DEC 15).
MIN in: Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, Steven Hunter, Allen Iverson
MIN out: Mark Blount, Damian Wilkins, CHA 1st, Ryan Gomes
MEM in: Emeka Okafor, Ryan Gomes
MEM out: Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Allen Iverson, Steven Hunter
NO in: Mark Blount, Damian Wilkins, CHA 1st
NO out: Emeka Okafor
MIN lineup:
PG: Sessions, Flynn
SG: Brewer, Ellington
SF: Gay, Cardinal
PF: Love, Jefferson
C: Jefferson, Gasol, Pecherov
MIN gets out of Gomes contract, and adds Gay and Gasol. This gives MIN the option to match any offer for Gay rather than having to overpay to get MEM to not match.
MEM lineup:
PG: Conley
SG: Mayo, Jaric
SF: Gomes, Young
PF: Okafor, Randolph
C: Thabeet
MEM has a strong defensive starting group, with an extremly nice big man rotation to go with O.J. Mayo from the perimiter. They move the disgruntled Rudy Gay, the troubled AI, and upgrade Gasol.
NO does this purely for financial reasons, and is based off the recent rumors around dealing Okafor for expirings. They also get a mid 1st round pick.
My primary concern is MEM getting enough back. Granted they are getting the 1st and 3rd best players in the trade, so maybe it isn't as far off as I'm worried.

Don't think Memphis would view Gasol to Okafor an upgrade. Gasol is scoring more, rebounding more, shooting a higher percentage, and is making about $7 million less. But, yeah, if you could get MEM to bite (and if we bought out Iverson), I'd be all over this

I would think the Wolves would need to offer more to the Grizzlies.

I don't know if I agree with the on court production argument. The stats are actually fairly close, especially if you factor in quality of other talent on the team. I personally think Okafor would be a better fit in Mem than Gasol mainly because Okafor is a very good man defender and athlete, two things Gasol struggles with. This would allow Thabeet to be more of a roaming low defender, which would really highlight his strengths from UConn. I do however agree that the $7 million dollars/year makes a big difference. So I have two questions:
1) Will Memphis be able to retain Gasol when his contract runs out?- i.e. would a guraenteed Okafor be better?
2) Is the deal close enough that things could be tinkered with to get it to an acceptable level? I.e. adding UTH's pick.

Re: MIN/NO/MEM
It's too good for the Wolves and too bad for Memphis. We're essentially getting either Gay or Gasol for free. Take either out and the trade looks much more fair.
Think about it. We're getting 2 of their 3 best players for expirings and a mid first, and they're taking on tons of long term salary to boot.
Just a completely unfair trade. Chris Wallace is dumb, but he's not this dumb.

You say Okafor is an upgrade. Note sure you are right from the memphis standpoint.
Gasol is ranked 4th among Centers in PER. Okafor isn't in the top 20.
Gasol is averaging 15 pts and 11 rebounds, 1.7 blocks
Okafor is averaging 10.5 pts and 9.5 rebounds, 1.9 blocks.
Gasol is also much less expensive than Okafor for a team watching their payroll.

NO wants cap space for Okafor. They don't get Charlotte's pick. That would go to Memphis instead, and make this a more reasonable deal.

Re: MIN/NO/MEM
A more likely trade (and more fair to Memphis) would be
MN In: Gasol, Gay, S. Hunter
MN Out: Al Jefferson, CHA 1st
Mem Out: Gasol, Gay, S. Hunter
Mem In: Al Jefferson, CHA 1st
Big Al is good, but I would definitely do this trade. I'm not sure how Gay's RFA status affects our cap, but I think it improves it until we officially sign him which means this also increases our chances of getting another star free agent. This also allows Memphis to get out of the big upcoming contract commitments for Gay and Gasol while getting Al Jefferson for a reasonable price. A frontcourt of Big Al, Randolph, and Thabeet should be fairly strong since Thabeet makes up for Big Al and Randolph's defense while Big Al and Randolph make up for Thabeet on offense.
I think Gay and Gasol would be perfect fits for our team especially in the triangle offense and the up and down style we want to play. To get both in a single trade would be amazing. This also puts Big Al close to his home state of Mississippi since Memphis is right by the TN/Mississippi border. He would actually be a big time fan favorite for them.

First off, that trade makes us significantly worse. It's supposed to make us better.
Second, Memphis doesn't want Rudy Gay for his price tag next year. Al is better than anyone else in that trade, and the Charlotte pick has way more value than a throw in pick. So why would we trade that pick away? We can get a 7 foot shot blocker with Charlotte's pick next year (I'm guessing it's pick 14 or 15 after the trade), sign Gay via free agency (he would take all of our cap space anyway, so why trade for him?), and keep Al Jefferson over the clearly inferior Gasol.
I like Marc Gasol just fine. But look at Memphis's team defense, Al and Marc's blocked shots, and a couple of defensive matrix's before you tell me how much better Gasol's defense is than Jefferson's. You might be surprised.

pssst, Lobo, Al Jefferson destroys Marc Gasol when he's healthy.

Re: MIN/NO/MEM
How about this twist:
NO out - Okafur, J. Wright
NO in - Marc Gasol, Brian Cardinal
They get a talented big to play with Paul (i.e, keep a decent product on the floor) and save a couple million this year and about $10 million next year.
MEM out - Gasol, Gay, Hunter
MEM in - Okafur, Gomes, CHA pick
They upgrade their defense and get an extra pick next year. Gay is possibly gone next year anyway.
MN out - Gomes, Cardinal, CHA pick
MN in - Gay, Wright, Hunter
Minny gets their shot at Gay so they can match any offer next year and gets a look at Wright as a backup.
Still not sure MEM does it. Maybe they'd be interested in Brewer? Thabeet/Okafur/Brewer would make for a nice defensive team to pair with Mayo and Randolph. IDK - don't really know what the heck MEM is trying to do.

And yes, Chris Wallace IS a cretin. However, he'd redeem himself with this trade.

Pssst, Lobo, Al Jefferson had a major knee injury and is not healthy yet. Al Jefferson is twice the player Marc Gasol is when he's healthy, they're not even close. Get off the Spaniard wagon, we're not going to pretend someone from Spain is better just because they are from Spain.

What does that have to do with the fact that Al Jefferson is a significantly better basketball player than Marc Gasol?

Re: MIN/NO/MEM
As far as the OP's deal, I dont think when Kahn envisioned a runnning team that his ideal frontcourt was going to be Jefferson, Love, Pekovic, and Gasol. Outside of including Oliver Miller, Stanley Roberts, Stojko Vrankocic, I cant think of a worse 'running' frontcourt. So maybe value wise you can make a case, but I dont envision Kahn ever believing that this is a good idea. And neither do I.
For me, deals involving Gasol, depend on what happens with Pekovic. There is no way we can have both. Especially if you look at a draft in which potential picks might be Aldrich, Montejunas, Favors, Davis, etc(depending on where we pick).
And sorry absolutely no Rudy Gay, an already-agreed upon non-max deal might be something to think about. But he is not my first choice to blow my cap load on.
