Just a thought....

Post#1 » by berserker » Thu Nov 19, 2009 12:45 am

maybe someone with more front-office knowledge than I can answer this....

Why couldn't we pick up Iverson, and trade he and maybe Malik Allen (Balkman, whatever) to NYK for David Lee? Or some other team with an expendable big who could use a guard...

yeah, we'd add a little salary, but that would give us a much better backup big - which is our missing piece. It's not like we aren't already over the cap....I like the thought of having a bench made up of Anderson/Lee/Graham/JR/Lawson.

Thoughts?

First of all, if New York wants Iverson, they'll just sign him himself. Secondly, AI + whatever for Lee wouldn't work financially. And even if it did, you can't trade a guy so soon after you sign him like that. Not that New York would do that trade anyway.

If we're going to trade for another mediocre big man for some added frontcourt depth, the most likely way would be by using our TPE. But until we actually lose either Nene or Kenyon for a extended period of time, that isn't going to happen.

David Lee is far from mediocre.

He'd be a great fit here.

can't sign a player out of free agency and then trade him immediately. need to wait at least 90 days iirc. and even if you did that....it looks bad in the players eyes. meaning future free agents would be less likely to sign since they'd be wary of being dealt immediately after the waiting period was up.

David Lee is a solid role player, but he put up empty stats.

He's a jump shooting big who cant guard his man. Way too undersize to play C (the position NY making him play) while seems to lack the lateral quickness to guard the elite PF.

But with all that said, he'll be an excellent addition to the bench along with Birdman. I doubt NY will trade him to us for junks, and Lee is going to be a 1 yr rental since he's looking for a big pay day next year.

P.S on picking up Iverson; while being a long time AI fan I oppose to the idea of having him back in Denver. He'll be taking minutes away from AA and JR, and cause distraction to the team if he isnt starting or if he doesnt play enough minutes.

I wouldn't be opposed to picking up Iverson. It's one of those things where you never know who you may need down the stretch. I think Karl is very wise to leave the door open as I believe Iverson would fit in to push it through and get that ring.

I don't like the idea of taking possessions away from our young stars, but I think that's something Iverson would have to realize coming back into the mix - that it would take all of the whole team to win it. Dude averaged 7 apg so it's not as scary as it might sound.

And Karl states there would have to be an injury for it to happen......so Iverson wouldn't be taking away minutes just replacing whoever goes down. We can do it with Chauncey alongside him.

You know though, all the championship teams have a very long and talented bench with guys that are ready to come in at any time and tear it up or hold it down. I'd say the more the merrier.

Unless Iverson suddenly grows a foot and learns how to rebound, I don't want him anywhere near this team.

He wouldn't get minutes, so what would be the point? Just to be even more of a distraction and bad influence then he was the last time he was here?

He isn't needed here, a decent big man that isn't afraid to hit the boards would be a better option.

David Lee would be a great fit! He can spread the floor for Nene to operate down low much more than he is doing now. Not a Center with D we need.

AI would be distraction without a doubt. He needs to embrace the aging and become solid role player.

Is there a any way of getting Marc from Memphis? /without losing one of our core guys/

There is no way in hell I would ever want AI close to this team again. Even if it was a short term contract.

As for getting Marc Gasol, I think he would be about the last player on their roster that they would trade, but it is memphis so who really knows.

I was simply thinking that we really don't have any players outside of maybe Malik Allen, Balkman, or A/C that are "expendable". Having Iverson would be a nice trade chip (if he kept his mouth shut) before the trade deadline, and we could use him to help us pick up another big for the playoff run. It's not so much that I want Iverson back on the Nuggets, it's that I see him as trade bait. Just to clarify.

I understand your thought process, but with the fact that he has to remain on the roster for 60 days, it would just be a bad idea all around. I think our best trade chips are the two TPEs that we still have, but it would be dependent on finding a player we want that another team needs to dump for $3.7 million a year or less.

I hear ya, Rebel....I just don't see any team that's going to give up a big that can actually help us for a trade exception alone. I think we'd have to sweeten the pot, either with a pick and/or a player. And Iverson, while he may have alienated himself with some people, is a valuable trade chip - expiring, still lightning quick, and packaged with Balkman may actually be able to bring back a decent big.

I just worry about our frontcourt's health. We lose Kmart or Nene for any extended time and we are in big trouble....

Would love to get a Pryzbilla or Gasol....but I just can't see that happening with a TE alone....
