Pierce ascends NBA all time leaders in points list

Post#1 » by campybatman » Thu Nov 19, 2009 3:04 am

In tonight's game, Pierce passes Isiah Thomas to move up on the NBA's all time leaders in points list. He's currently ranked fifty-two.

In about 10 games or less, he will pass 19K. By the end of the season, he will pass 20K, and by the end of next season, he will pass Larry Legend. Frigging awesome, Truth. Lead us to Number 18 please. You are already in the HOF.
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Interesting list, since it favors guys that played many years on bad teams. Not all that different from Paul pre-2007, but the Finals MVP and hopefully a second ring this year put him in the clear HOFer category.

Some of the weaker names in the top 50:
Mitch Richmond
Cliff Robinson
Terry Cummings
Reggie Theus (maybe the biggest shocker)

Other interesting guys that are not quite HOFers for various reasons:
Tom Chambers
Bernard King
Dale Ellis (one of the best pure shooters I've ever seen)

Also, kind of crazy to think that AI and Kobe entered the league at the same time and are currently sandwiched between Ewing and Barkley on the all time scoring list. AI will be done after this year, while Kobe probably moves past Dr. J for top 5 all time before hanging 'em up...

In the pre-cable tv days, I didn't see too much of Terry Cummings, so maybe I am underrating him because the back end of his career was weak. Cliff on the other hand, I remember very well from his early career through till his stint with the Pistons. Definitely a good player, but not an all-time great. He was never the best player on any of his teams and rightly so. Had a good tool kit for a player his size, but never was the type to dominate...

The thing I remember about Uncle Cliffy was that he revived the headband, plus the fact that he was one of the biggest chokers when it came to the playoffs. Dude would average a ton of points during the regular season, then just be putrid when the playoffs started.

Bernard King was pretty awesome - surprised he isn't in the HOF.

Cumming was very good. If I remember right, one of a long line of great players drafted by the Clippers and let go of. I think Terry had some medical issue later in his carreer that slowed him down.

Bernard King was the greatest low post small guy ever.

Its a shame for many reasons that Bird had back problems that cut his career short.

Check out these facts. I just did the math for fun. Assuming 19 very efficient ppg (he could be scoring about 26 ppg as we know, but he has sacrificed some of his offense to blend with KG and Ray in order to do what is most important, i.e to win banners!):

1) In about 10 games or so, he passes 19K.
2) Barring injurty, by the end of this season, he passes 20K (and is approaching age 33).
3) Barring injurty, by the end of next season, he passes Larry Legend and gets down to the low 30s on the All Time Scoring List (and is approaching age 34).
4) Barring injury, if he maintains the same very efficient 19 ppg and plays 3 additional seasons, he passes Hondo as the Celtics All Time Leading Scorer with greater than 26K points, and gets close to top 15 on the All Time Scoring List (and is approaching age 37). However, age 34 through 37 is when even the most conditioned and skilled athletes decline – therefore projection number 4 may or may not happen.

Oorah Truth. Oorah Truth. 1-2 more banners please before our window closes.

Pierce would have been thought of the same way had he not gotten some talent to help him out. The Knicks sucked because he had crap around him, IMHO. In his era there was nothing wrong with King's defense..

I don't disagree with you...while I think now Pierce will be in the HOF, I certainly didn't before he won a ring...

Cummings was solid in the post and had a very strong midranger, every bit as good as Malone's but less remembered for it. He played for eons as well. Scoring touch isn't reserved only for the all-time greats.
