WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo (Nov 18, Versus)

Post#1 » by CPT » Tue Nov 17, 2009 1:23 am

Seems like this card has been lost in a busy month of MMA events and news. I don't think it's as strong as a typical WEC card top to bottom, but it has one of the better main events we've seen this year.

MAIN CARD

* Champ Mike Brown vs. Jose Aldo (for WEC featherweight title)
* Manny Gamburyan vs. Leonard Garcia
* Karen Darabedyan vs. Rob McCullough
* Danny Castillo vs. Shane Roller

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)

* Will Kerr vs. Kamal Shalorus
* L.C. Davis vs. Diego Nunes
* John Franchi vs. Cub Swanson
* Antonio Banuelos vs. Kenji Osawa
* James Krause vs. Ricardo Lamas
* Seth Dikun vs. Frank Gomez

Brown and Aldo both look pretty much unstoppable at this point. I really like both guys too. I'm going for Aldo though. Such an exciting fighter to watch.

Gamburyan vs. Garcia is a decent matchup at FW. I didn't see Manny's debut in the WEC, but this is a fairly high profile fight, and a big challenge. Garcia is still pretty damn good.

I have to admit, I have no idea who the guy Razor Rob is fighting is.

Castillo vs. Roller could be a good one.

Some names on the undercard, with LC Davis, Swanson, Banuelos, Lamas.

Looking forward to this show.

Brown vs. Aldo might be the fight of the year. Or it might be over in 30 seconds. LC Davis vs. Nunes should really be on the main card.

One good thing about a possible merger with the UFC is that they do a much better job than the WEC of picking the right fights for their main cards.

However, I'm not sure some of these fights would even make a UFC prelim, even with 3 events a month.

Clearly if the UFC absorbed the WEC, a lot of these guys would be without a job because they would not need to carry nearly as many of them.

I hope Aldo knocks Brown out, but I have a feeling Brown is just going to smother him for however long Aldo can last.

Aldo is like a mini Anderson Silva. Freak athlete. His td defense was awesome. His standup was unreal. So freaking fast.

Mike Brown is a big strong 145 pounder and Aldo made him look small and weak. He is huge for the division and his striking is Silva-esque.

Aldo winning is the best thing that could have happened for the WEC. Because it means if Faber beats Assuncao (no easy task) then a mega fight between Faber and Aldo can happen.

Faber/Assuncao should be good as well, I really like Assuncao.

As for the fight tonight, I'm happy, got good odds betting on Aldo.

Aldo is a monster. That was extremely impressive. I was surprised Brown was so willing to stand. He was getting murdered, but the only time he went for a takedown is when he was stunned. Of course it looks like I really underestimated Aldo's defense. Very nice win.

Brown has been able to out strike everyone at 145 until last night. I think he was surprised by Aldo's striking.

My BJJ coach was cornering Aldo last night.

I know Aldo striking is sick, but did you see his back control on a very strong Mike Brown? Thats Nova Uniao BJJ at its best, we are known for having a controlling top game, look at BJ Penn's top game, not alot of people know but he also is a Nova Uniao BJJ player.

I have no doubt his BJJ is very good, I just find it funny that they talk it up every fight and he rarely uses it.

I have only seen Brown fight 4 times, but I have never been too impressed with his striking. Faber made a fatal mistake against him in the first fight and Faber was holding his own with only one hand the second time. I like Garcia but those huge wild punches are a joke. If you told me Brown was going to be that willing to stand with Aldo I would have put money on him getting KTFO.

Aldo looked really impressive. Dude's a monster at 145 though, somewhat unfair for the true 145ers.

Anyways, I wasn't ready to jump aboard the Mike Brown P4P bandwagon that everyone was ready to put him on, and although he did nothing to deserve any hate, I'm glad he lost.

Looking forward to the Faber fight, wonder where Brown goes from here though, if their full out on making the winner of Faber/Assuncao fight Aldo for the belt.

Aldo vs. Faber could be headlined the freakshow, both of those cats are athletic freaks. I would pay to see that one. I have to agree on not riding Browns jock too, I cant seem to get the image of Genki submitting him easily with a triangle arm bar out my mind, the dude has Faber number but he is not as good as everyone was making him out to be. IMHO Aldo will KO Faber just like Brown.

All you guys are seriously sleeping on Brown now after the fact. He beat the previously unbeatable Urijah Faber twice and had not lost at 145. He holds wins over Faber twice, Curran, and Garcia among others.

He deserved all the hype he got, he just ran into a bigger freak.
