Deron's Rebounding

Post#1 » by erudite23 » Thu Nov 19, 2009 6:51 pm

So far this season, Deron has been making a much stronger effort on the glass, it is visible to the naked eye. I've seen him jump for the rebound and attack it in traffic more times in these two weeks than I've seen in the rest of his career combined, and its showing up on the stats. He's at 5.2 per game for the season, a very respectable total for a PG, and his Rebound Rate has gone from an anemic 4.6 to a very impressive 7.7 . After finishing in the bottom 10 of all PGs in RR last season, he is currently ranked 8th, beating out such luminaries as CP, Dre Miller, Rajon Rondo and Baron Davis.

So this is the question: is this a blip on the radar or fundamental change in his game. We've always been confused by the fact that he doesn't go to the boards more with that big body of his. Its not like he's averse to contact, the dude craves it. I see no reason why this shouldn't continue, but I'm afraid that it won't.

So what should we expect.?

It is puzzling. I never thought rebounding was something you could turn on and off. Either you had a nose for the ball and the desire to chase it, or you didn't.

Maybe he was more focused on leaking out in the past, and the coaches asked him to focus more on rebounding instead.

One thing to note, maybe someone allready did. We had Deron, Maynor, and AK on the floor at once last night. That's a lot of ball handlers. So, maybe that frees Deron up a bit to hit the boards. Or maybe he was playing as a '2' when he went after the rebounds.

Overall, I don't expect it to continue long term. I just don't expect him to change his game at this point of his career.

That would only be a possiblity if that had been happening all season. Deron's rebounding has been improved since the opening tip. In fact, it goes back to preseason. And with Ronnie Price on the court, we actually IMPROVE over what Brewer does as a rebounder, so that can't be it either. Its all on Deron.

I think he might be doing it for stats, honestly. The embarrasment of having a 6 ft shrimp like CP outrebound you on a regular basis might have gotten to him. I sure hope so. He should be embarassed.

Deron craves the all star recognition which has thus far been lacking in his career. It seems one can almost sense his thought process: Damn... what else can I do? I score, run the O, try to play D... I got it! I'm a big dude, an athlete- I'll hit the glass! No way they can freeze me out if I put up 20/10/5!

If D-Will records one single triple-double it is going to be incredibly difficult to deny him an All-Star spot. If he records two then he is a lock. He says he always looked up to Jason Kidd when he was growing up, and Kidd is a triple-double machine because of his rebounding. I believe we would've seen this last year if D-Will hadn't hurt the ankle. Rebounding is the last thing you wanna do on a bad ankle.

Well, I dunno how many stat/fantasy geeks are voting for allstar slots, but, rebounds and steals would really help his value.

I would think most folks are more impressed by points though, which he's putting up aplenty.

He needs a better team record to make the All-Star game. And even if the Jazz have a good record, they'll likely get only one all-star. So, will it be Boozer or Deron?

I think it was something discussed during camp. Brewer has improved his rebounding as well.
