artest's defense
how has ron artest's defense been looking this year? i haven't really had much time to see all the games...he said that he understood his role as being 3rd, 4th option and was just gonnna concentrate on defense...has he been locking down the person he guards?

Re: artest's defense
his defense is way better than advertised by his former team's fanbase. he's locked up quite a number of helpless attackers.

I thought his d was overrated at first...boy was i wrong. So many deflections and steals without gambling. He definitely made our post interior defense much much more affective.

i haven't really had a chance to see him....but in the past...it seems as if he either lost focus on D to compensate on offensive side....i assumed he guarded deng and his stat line was 3-11
he is back to dpoy artest?
he is back to dpoy artest?

Re: artest's defense
We have yet to see him square off against elite players outside of Melo but his man defense is the best I've seen in quite sometime.

Re: artest's defense
Kobe is 3rd in steals in the NBA I believe and Ron deserves some credit for that.

If Kevin Durant isn't an elite scorer, he's damn close.

Artest has been consistently good with his D, plus so far he has been a class act minus the the Ariza shoe throwing. LOL, God Bless you Ron. I am sure he reads RealGM.

Re: artest's defense
He F--ed up Deng last night...
It was a pure battle and a thing of beauty to a Laker fan who hasn't seen anybody play 'tenacious-d' other than Kobe in a long time...
He looked like he was in Deng's shorts.
Mello had an easier time of it. I don't really think there's anyone that can gaurd Mello 1 on 1 anymore though. And a ton of fouls went against us that game.
He's been very active on defense and is finding his place here.
So I'd go with the better than expected crowd too...
DPOY? We talkin' bout DPOY? (Not Iverson... That football Coach... Playoffs..)
It's a little early to tell but at this point I think he may be a candidate but I don't think he gets the award. I'd probably say top 5... But maybe I've got my purple and gold colored glasses on...

Re: artest's defense
Artest has been a beast so far..
Blocking out his man and helping others get rebounds..
Harassing and getting turnovers and communicating well with Odom and Kobe to pass off cutters with out the need to chase people around. He guarding everybody from Shooting Gaurds , small forwards and Power forwards..
His offense is just a bonus.. Our defense has never looked this good.. with Gasol we were looking invincible.. Gasol , Bynum , Kobe all need double teams... that gave a lot of open shots for everybody.
He still needs to take more of the open shots he gets..
Our only short fall is we need another good bench player for the regular season and in the playoffs when we are up a over 20 pts because invariable our bench cant hold on to leads....
Glad we shipped Ariza.. he is no comparison to Artest..

Kilroy, someone, tell me something. Who shut down Salmons in the second half last night???
I watched him torch Kobe's "stealing-seeking" arse in the first half, but couldn't watch the second half. IIRC he was scoreless in the second half. What happened? Did we put Ron-Ron on him, ala Joe Johnson? Or did Kobe actually start playing D? lol

I noticed that in the first half too...
I only got to watch through the 3rd quarter and Salmons didn't play much in that quarter. He got into foul trouble...
So I guess indirectly, Kobe was pretty effective on him.

Kobe's legs look fresher this season, but he doesn't look like he's in mid season form yet. His shots aren't falling at his normal rate and his reactions on D are a little off... I think that will come though.
Maybe having more time off isn't a good thing for him.

Re: artest's defense
Ron's hands have been super fast. He's like Ariza in that regard, but being a vet, he gambles less and uses positioning smartly while never forgetting to pull a number of jabs, swipes, or pats to free the ball up.
The other really big thing I've seen has been something Stu harps on about most players, so I'm sure you've heard before: When rushing at shots Ron does not go directly at the shooter. He does a fly to the side of the shooter. It's amazing effective and you rarely see him tap a hand or crash into a face and get a foul like most people do.
Not many people post on Ron it seems, but because he's not long- strong post players actually do pretty well against him. When we got him analysts kept saying "he's not fleet of foot any more, doesn't move like he used to" maybe not, but he eats fast wing players alive and can hang on pg's even... surprisingly, though, I think his post D is overrated and guys who will bang then turnaround like Melo have the most success on him.
Positionally he rarely gambles, I haven't noticed any blatant matador defense from him, and he rotates well.
I don't think he gets DPOY but he might deserve it. I think that award goes to people who make flashy blocks and who's coaches rally monkey them. I look for Howard to get it again even if Ron does a much more effective job in all +/- reality on D.

While gaurding Melo Ariza was a total wash.. Ron did a far better job than that..
Melo is taller and quicker, he can post and he can make the outside shot.. thats why ron had trouble containing him .. but still i like how ron played melo .. he sure has made us a very tough defensive team..

Re: artest's defense
Worth mentioning that Artest sat out the 3rd Q with fouls when Melo picked steam.

His D is looking good, but his shot has been shaky, not to mention his free throw is not looking good. Overall, he really helps the Lakers. I think he needs to practice a little more on his three points because he'll be getting a lot of those.

Re: artest's defense
i thought ron's 3 3rd qtr fouls were a load of bs, and the refs decided to referee the game differently, i thought it was impressive and very mature that ron didnt blow up at the refs when he saw what they were doing to him...
overall, ron's been a very welcome surprise with his playmaking abilities in addition to his very evident tenacious D...
its a shame we havent played more top tier teams, i wanna see ron do some statistical damage holding some of those stars we see stats on (you know what article im talking about...) to 25-35% shooting nights
