Minor Trade That Doesn't Mess With Our Current Success

The Hawks have been doing great recently, and I tend to stick with the theory of not messing with success, but it wouldn’t hurt to trade an underused player for someone who could fill a void for us. The Hawks success seems to be due to our efficient offense (4th best FG%) and our rebounding (8th best rebounding difference), but our defense is not spectacular (18th best in opponents’ FG%). Indiana, on the other hand, is 21st in FG% and 8th in Opponents’ FG%. If anything, they could use a little bit of a boost on the offensive end, and the two teams are good fit for a minor trade. In comparing Zaza and Foster, we see that they would be a good switch:

Zaza:
1. Scoring: Pushes the ball inside and scores timely points that kill opposing teams’ momentum. (When he is given the minutes.)
2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Zaza was on pace to get 10 rebounds a game (10.4)
3. Defense: Zaza is about as lost on defense and Jeff Foster is on offense.

Foster:
1. Scoring: Foster is about as lost on offense as Zaza is on defense
2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Foster was on pace to get about 10 rebounds a game (9.7)
3. Defense: Although, not a dazzling shot-blocker by any means, Foster is an effective one-on-one defender against opposing bigs.

Thus the two teams gain the following:

Atlanta:
1. Trading a player that doesn’t receive the minutes to score his points for a defensive big man that can come off the bench in a limited role and help with the 7 footers that have given Horford problems in the past.
2. Receiving near equal rebounding quality in return
3. Gaining another veteran presence

Indiana:
1. Gets an offensive talent for defensive
2. Gets a role player that can help them keep momentum
3. Gets near equal value for rebounding
4. Gets a younger player that is about to be 26 for a player that is about to be 33.
5. Gets more bulk inside (275 pounds).
6. Would actually get a 2nd round pick to push this trade through if they wanted it, because I really want someone who can come off the bench and disrupt 7 footers in the play offs.

I should have also added that the Hawks would need to throw in a filler such as Morris or Collins to make the trade work, and that it cannot take place till December 15th, due to a trade restriction.

I most definitely wouldn't trade Zaza, a fan favorite, for a washed up old player who is at the end of his career.

Not to mention the Pacers wouldn't do it either since Jeff Foster is pretty much a Pacer for life.

Is popularity really that important for a player used in as limited a capacity as Zaza? Players like Foster too, that aren't reliant on any impressive atlethicism, can have long careers that are effective well into their golden years.

I think that could be a bad trade for both teams if there is such. Both of these players are role players for their teams and they both perform there roles well. I don't see any reason for either team to do it. Now if the Pacers just want to get bigger then we could ship them Morris and Collins for Foster :wink:

You're talking about 2 backups, and one of them (Foster), has been injured for a while. I'm not even sure if he's palyed a game this season yet. Anyway, I'd take him over Zaza anytime. You get 2 very important things on a consistent basis from a guy like Foster, defense and rebounding. He can move his feet quite well and doesn't get called for offensive fouls, 3 sec. violations, or travel, nearly as much as Zaza does. Zaza looks like a rookie on the court very often, his basketball IQ is terrible, and mentally he's right there in the Marvin level.

i dont know why everyone on this forum just INSIST on trading some one.

last year it was flooded with threads wanting trade Josh for Kaman, Josh for Tyson chandler and all sorts of nonsense.

now its marvin or zaza because they havent been world beaters.

^^^ I think you are reading way too much into this post. I'm not insisting that we abosuletly have to trade someone or that Zaza has to be a world beater. If anything I think I identify him as a worthwhile player fairly well. In all honesty, I would have loved to have kept Zaza and traded fillers and a pick for Foster, but it was impossible to get the numbers to match without trading Mo Evans. Trading Zaza just made more sense to me in order to fill our one void when it comes time to guard Howard, Shaq, etc.

They do each play their roles well, it just seems that Zaza is playing an offensive role on a team with more than enough offense and a need for a little extra defense, while Foster is vice versa.
