Finley for Brewer
We essentially dump Brewer's contract next year, knowing now that maybe he's not worth $3.75 million of cap space. Finley would probably take a really cheap buy out.
Popovic grooms Brewer into the next Bruce Bowen.
Everybody wins!

If we didn't want to pay Brewer next year, we would have just declined his option. I think he's here to stay, and I don't actually have a problem with that.

+1
I don't see how the Wolves "win" doing this.

Re: Spurs/Wolves
Brewer is an asset. His production is a positive compared to his contract. Gomes is a positive, but his contract makes him the player we need to move.

Re: Spurs/Wolves
I think we picked up his option thinking he would have improved his game offensively. This was obviously a very difficult decision for Kahn and I think he picked up the option knowing he would later be able to trade him if needed. Well it's apparent his jump shot hasn't improved/
I personally would just rather have the $3.75 million in cap space next year. The cap space seems like a more valuable asset than Brewer at this point.

I think Kahn will use him in a pkg at the trade deadline, not only did we pickup his option because of how he was playing early on, but he also draws a lot of interest from many teams

Brewer's production is junk. Gomes is passable.

I might actually prefer to keep Brewer over Gomes, but I'd sooner get rid of both.

While he hasn't shown it this year, I think Gomes is the better player and will be in the future as well. That said, I agree 100% with Dr. K.

Re: Spurs/Wolves
Gomes is pretty valuable player off the bench, because of his abilty to play 2 positions on defense, he can guard big SFs and perimeter oriented PFs. I saw him doing passable job on Dirk, strong Sfs like Melo and Lebron, even SGs like Kobe and Roy, Gomes has very good length, iirc 9ft standing reach.
Brewer doesn't have the strength to guard those guys, he can chase guys like Allen and Rip and play good help defense, but he's not a shutdown defender some people think he is.
On offense Gomes can do things Brewer struggles with, like hitting outside shot, finishing around the rim. Ryan can post time other SFs and spread the defense from PF spot. He's not consistent enough to be a starter, but playing of the bench can be the right thing for him.
Brewer is the player to get rid of here for me.

Re: Spurs/Wolves
If Kahn comes up with a better way to spend the money I think we have to be willing to move him. We are kinda stuck in that he has some value as a prospect but really isn't worth 3.7M a season.
Battier is making 6.9M this year. In his heyday Bowen was earning ~6.0M. Brewer has no 3PT shot (or any shot for the matter) but is supposed to be good on the break (though he is still a poor finisher too.) If he was earning 700K-1.5M we could stash him on the bench and give him spot minutes as he (hopefully) grows into his body and improves his mechanics. He has to improve his shooting/finishing. He also has to get bigger so he can play some at forward. He is just not a two guard (on offense.) Earning 3M this year, perhaps the team feels somewhat compelled to play him there now. It feels though like we are spinning our tires whenever he is in the back court with Jonny.
If we do actually keep him, I'll understand that the team sees potential in him as our Trans Bowen (an eventual glue guy/defensive stopper who is good on fast breaks.) He certainly has a long way to go though to reach that potential.

That's what I think as well. We're a developing team, and Corey Brewer has physical assets that could help him develop into the type of player that can help us - young, long, athletic, and an ability to defend. He's got a ways to go, but I feel we locked into keeping him because of those characteristics.
Gomes, on the other hand, has developed most of his potential into the player you see today. He's worked hard, he'll do whatever he's asked, and he's a better player than Brewer. However, he doesn't nearly have the upside of Brewer. Gomes would be a terrific fit on a contender that needs depth and insurance.
I believe both players have slightly positive trade value. However, while they are worth their contracts, they may not be worth their contracts in dollars under the salary cap if they stayed here. Gomes is far less of a fit here than the developing Brewer, and he's the more likely of the two to be traded. I doubt that Kahn signed Brewer a month ago for 2010 and suddenly decided he's a bad fit, but I will say that either could be gone for a good offer. I just think that Brewer is probably more valuable to us than to almost any team.

Re: Spurs/Wolves
I'd like to see Brewer next to Love, Jefferson, and a swingman that can score first before getting rid of him, he seems like he could develop into a nice starter, but when you play him next to Gomes or Wilkens or god forbid, Pavlovic, then his warts really come out because everybody needs to be an offensive threat with this team now, but get that swingman that can score and Brewer can concentrate on loose balls and defense and I think you got yourself one of those guys that good teams are always looking for.

I really don't want to see us give up on him yet either. And if we do, I'd want us to use him to take a flyer on a younger player that maybe needs a change of scenery, which is what any team that traded for brewer would be doing as well.
