Bynum Making His Point
When Will Bynum joined the Detroit Pistons last season, he drew comparisons to Horace Jenkins, Anthony Goldwire and Will Blalock -- point guards who passed through Detroit in recent years. None of the three was good enough to stick in the NBA, but the Pistons had to fill their roster. Bynum has been anything but filler. Averaging 14.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds off the bench, he's one of the few bright spots for the 5-9 Pistons. Some have even began to question whether he should play ahead of Rodney Stuckey, Detroit's cornerstone player.

Stuckey, 23, is a tantalizing mix of size and speed. And he's certainly not a bad player (17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game). But that should just show endearing Bynum has been this season. With his ability to drive to the basket, he's often Detroit's go-to player down the stretch. If the NBA's stars pass on the dunk contest again, Bynum should be considered for the event. And he's doing all of this after going undrafted, playing in the NBDL and spending two seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Perhaps, most remarkable has been his improvement in Detroit. It seems like he's shooting more efficiently and passing, rebounding and defending better each day.

Unfortunately for Detroit, the 26-year-old is a free agent this summer, and it's tough to see the Pistons resigning him. Faced with a similar situation in 2004, Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars let Mehmet Okur, a promising backup who wouldn't have started over Rasheed Wallace in Detroit, sign with the Utah Jazz. Ben Gordon probably fills the Pistons' high-priced backup guard quota, too.Teams that might be in the market for a point guard next year -- ahem, Lakers, Heat and Knicks -- should keep an eye on Bynum.

Red-Hot Shooting By The Suns
The Suns made 42 of 73 field-goal attempts, shooting 57.5 percent, in their 117-91 win over Detroit. That's a remarkable shooting percentage against any team, but especially so against the Pistons, which had not allowed a shooting percentage that high in any of their last 333 games. The last team to shoot that well against the Pistons was Dallas, which hit 59.2 percent in a win on Nov. 19, 2005.

Matt Bonner had 23 points off the bench and the Spurs won consecutive games for only the second time this season. They also finally took advantage of a big night from Duncan, having previously been 0-4 when the All-Star scored 20 or more.

A reality check on Detroit Pistons' 2010 salary cap situation
It's always fun to discuss trade rumors and potential free agents moves, but you can't address these topics in the NBA without taking the salary cap into consideration. Unless you've been sleeping under a rock, you're aware that the 2010 free agent class is one of the most exciting in NBA history. Superstars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki and Yao Ming could all be market. While it's fun to anticipate where these players might end up, you should know the Detroit Pistons currently don't have the cap room to make a significant offseason splash. Pistons.com's Keith Langois breaks it down.

The Pistons will be limited to their use of the mid-level and biannual exceptions next summer. But here’s what fans should know: Even if they hadn’t signed Gordon and Villanueva, it’s very doubtful they would have had enough cap room to bid on a player like Bosh. With their contract obligations to Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell, Rodney Stuckey, Austin Daye and Chris Wilcox (assuming he exercises his player option), the Pistons are on the hook for roughly $35 million next season. Throw in the contracts of Jonas Jerebko and DaJuan Summers and add another $2 million, estimated. They’ll need to keep a cap hold for Will Bynum as a restricted free agent. And they’ll have to add three more minimum-salary spots to get to the 12 roster spots needed for calculating a team’s cap room. You’re basically at $40 million heading into July 1 when the NBA sets the salary cap for the coming season. There are estimates the cap could come down to as low as $50 million. For the sake of planning, most are using a figure of $53 million. That means the Pistons would have about $13 million or so to offer a premium free agent, when a player like Bosh will be expecting a maximum contract, which should start at something above $16 million. So that’s a pretty important point.

So without Gordon and Villanueva's contracts, the Pistons were still unlikely to be a player in next year's free agent market. With those contracts Detroit will already be on the books for more than $50 million not including the money it will take to retain Will Bynum. This of course assumes Detroit won't make any move before the trade deadline. Still, even trading away Hamilton and his $12.6 million salary for an expiring contract wouldn't clear up enough room to pursue a player like Bosh. If Detroit could manage to unload both Hamilton and Prince for a massive expiring contract like Houston's Tracy McGrady, the Pistons could potentially have the wiggle room to lure a player like Bosh, but at that point you have to wonder if giving away more than you're getting back.

Al Thornton scored 31 points and Baron Davis made a clinching layup with 8.5 seconds remaining after missing his first nine shots to help the Los Angeles Clippers beat Minnesota 91-87 Monday night, extending the Timberwolves' losing streak to 13 games.

Davis' streak of 468 consecutive regular-season games with at least one field goal was in jeopardy until he drove the lane for a layup after dribbling the ball for at least 10 seconds. He finished with two points and six assists in 23 minutes.

Rookie Jonny Flynn led Minnesota with 17 points, one of five players in double digits, and Al Jefferson added 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Timberwolves have been held under 88 points in six consecutive games since their 145-105 loss at Golden State on Nov. 9.

Shaquille O'Neal practices, hopes to return against Pistons
Shaquille O'Neal asked for a shot. The Cavaliers gave him 10 days off instead.

The team wouldn't comply when O'Neal asked for a cortisone injection to make his ailing shoulder feel better, choosing to treat it with rest and rehab. O'Neal returned to practice with Cleveland on Monday and is hopeful he can play in Detroit on Wednesday.

O'Neal missed five games after he tried blocking a dunk by Miami's Michael Beasley on Nov. 12.

Pistons' 0-4 trip highlights shortcomings
When the NBA schedule first came out, this just completed four-game Western trip didn't look kind.Four playoff teams, with two back-to-back sets. Not easy under the best of circumstances. But worse for the Pistons, who sustained difficulties on the way out West.

Injuries to Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, then an overtime game Saturday in Utah and a short turnaround to Sunday's game in Phoenix while ending the trip, and the chances of earning any wins shrunk. Sure enough, there were no victories. Close, in three of them, thanks to some furious comebacks and an admirable no-quit attitude.

But close doesn't matter in the NBA. There are no ties in this league. It's either win or lose, and the column on the right-hand side is growing faster than the one on the left. Heading into this trip, there was a sense we were going to learn a little more about this Pistons roster. Those items did grow clearer, including.

• They reallymiss Prince and Hamilton: The Pistons have proven in the past with Ben Wallace that a team can go 4-on-5, but with Wallace and Jonas Jerebko in the starting lineup, it's almost like going 3-on-5 offensively. Wallace has been incredible defensively, and Jerebko has often played like a young Wallace.

But at times on this trip, opponents didn't even acknowledge Wallace and Jerebko on the offensive end. The longer Hamilton (sprained right ankle) and Prince (small ruptured disc) are out -- and Prince seems the closer to returning, but at least another week -- the more you see how valuable they are.

Hamilton and Prince are also two fundamentally sound players and they settle things down when the game starts going off the track.

Point, counterpoint: The question of whether Rodney Stuckey is best suited for point guard or shooting guard remains an issue.

Coach John Kuester is spending a lot of time with Stuckey, teaching him the nuances of the position, and it's likely going to be a seasonlong lesson. But watching Stuckey's aggressive nature on the offensive end, you wonder whether he's more suited for a shooting-guard role.

For that matter, Will Bynum, for all his explosiveness, also is still learning how to run a team. He's at his best when the floor is spread or on the break.

They need a low-post presence: At first, the idea of trading the valuable Prince for someone such as Chris Kaman of the Clippers (Grand Rapids) seemed laughable.

But watching Kaman enjoying a breakthrough season in Los Angeles, and the fact the Pistons have nobody that is remotely an offensive threat in the low post with that type of size, and now a trade like that (or someone comparable as Kaman) sounds tempting.

Put a low-post presence of that ilk on this roster, and suddenly this looks like a dangerous playoff team.

The rookies continue to make an impact: One thing the injuries to Prince and Hamilton have done is create an opportunity for rookies Jerebko, DaJuan Summers and Austin Daye, and all have contributed impressively at different times.

Jerebko's offensive game is in its infancy, but his defensive skills are something else. Jerebko guarded Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Andrei Kirilenko and Ron Artest last week. Different shapes, different sizes, and Jerebko held his own against them.

Summers got his first chance at playing time and showed court savvy and ability to knock down a shot. Daye is far from a finished product, but his offensive skills in that 6-foot-11 body could someday drive opposing defenses nuts.

Upcoming test: There are always tests and the upcoming one is a chance for the Pistons to reverse this last grade. Seven of their next nine games are at The Palace. This is an opportunity for the Pistons to at least get back to even, and maybe even above .500 when Prince and Hamilton return.

Pistons coach John Kuester: Trust the system, skid will end
After Sunday night's blowout loss to the Suns, the Pistons' losing streak reached five games, with a Wednesday night home date looming with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Pistons' defense has been solid, but the offense has been a concern in a 5-9 start.

That can be attributed partly to the absences of captains Rip Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) because of injuries. For the first time this season, coach John Kuester questioned the effort of his team after Sunday's loss.

But Kuester wants to emphasize that players should fight the urge to try to do too much to end the losing streak. Just trust the system and your teammates, and things will be OK."That is an issue at times because guys want to win so bad," Kuester said. "They've worked so hard, and all of sudden they find themselves in a position where they try to do too much, and all we need to is understand what's important. And that is defend, run the court every time and play with the type of intensity for 48 minutes that I want to see us do and everything will fall into place."
