What do we expect from Ray Allen after this season

Post#1 » by TheOGJabroni » Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:21 am

I've seen some threads popping up recently, putting Ray Allen in trade talks. I, for one, do not think this is a lost season. I still think we can recover from this "slow start of 10-4" and right the ship. But at the same time, if the right deal was to come along and it helped our chances of winning a championship this year, as well as making us younger/better in the future, obviously the C's should do it.

Now, what exactly would this right deal be? What can the C's realistically expect back in return for Ray Allen?

$10 million is a quote I've seen for Ray and to me that is far too much.

He rarely gets to the line.

Has no one-on-one game.

We specifically have to get him the ball to get him into a "flow" so he can play good.

No play making abilities.

If it's the right trade then we should do it or re-sign him to a modest value.

I wanted Ray got at the end of last season, so I would have no problem with a sign and trade if it benefited the team. I am however against a big move in the middle of the season, unless they are getting a huge upgrade over Allen.

Which isn't going to happen, so we might as well keep Ray...if Ray leaves it will be for the worse, not for the best. Next year we should re-sign him at a low price...if he wants too much, let him walk..but this season Ray must stay.

I expect to see him playing against us 2-4 times a year after this season.

Then I expect us to no longer be an elite team. I've asked it of the Ray-haters for 2 years, but who is this magical player who will be a HUGE upgrade to Ray that teams are dying to trade to us??

A couple of things,

1. Ray Allen is not going to bring something back in a trade that is a better alternative to Ray Allen a SG. The Celtics might be able to get back a good young player but they are in a win now mode and are not going to wait 2-3 years for a young player to develop.

2. If Ray Allen leaves the Celtics at the end of the year the Celtics will have no realistic way of replacing him because of the salary cap. The best they could do is try to get a replacement using the MLE. I don't thing using the MLE will get a better player than Ray Allen.

3. Probably the most important. Ray Allen plays his role on the Celtics. So far this season Ray Allen gets 12.1 shots per game. Pierce gets 12.6 shots per game and KG gets 12.2 shots per game. Bringing in someone else may disrupt the team chemistry if that player needs 16-18 shots per game.

I fully expect Ray Allen to be signing a 2-3 year extension with the Celtics at the end of the season because of all of these reasons plus the fact that they are still winning (10-4 this season). The job is not to replace Ray, Pierce and KG but to add talent to them to ease the load especially over the next 2-3 years.

Because of the lack of youth to trade it's not really possible but I want to go after Kevin Martin to replace him. Maybe if the Kings threw in some of their bad deals and we threw in some future picks they might bite if they struggle when he returns.

We should keep Ray and hope he will sign another contract here for the MLE or even less. But Ray is also the perfect player to start ring hunting. He could fit in every where and be super effective.

Because if Ray walks in the end of the season we are not running for another ship, but start rebuilding.

It depends on how much he's looking to make. If we can keep him for a reasonable salary (around $8 million or so), I'd love to have him back, but we can't pay him $19 million or whatever he's making this year.

I am a Ray hater but as others have pointed out, you cannot replace what he can still deliver with the MLE or a pure talent trade with what is currently on the roster. In a Celtic fan perfect world, Golden State would be heck bent on dealing Ellis and dying to clear cap room this offseason for some FA prize, but that's not plausible.

So, I say he comes back at contract terms that most of us will believe are inflated. My only hope is that Ainge can deal him sometime before his next contract ends for something of value down the road.

you guys are nuts. We are lucky to have Ray Allen. 3 years 24 mil would be a steal.

In theory we would be lucky if we had younger stars to surround him(like Reggie Miller had JO/Artest/etc) but this team won't be title contenders with it's top 3 players being 35 years old.

We've cast our lot with Allen/Pierce/Garnett.

There is no reason to start rebuilding while they are still around. Squeeze all you can get out of them, then rebuild.

You know who the guy we're going to lose is? Perk. He'll command a lot when his bargain contract is over.

Who do Celtics fans expect to get better than Ray Allen?

How do you expect the Celtics to get that player?

Seriously, if Ray Allen wanted a 3 year extension worth $36 million I don't know how the Celtics could refuse given their salary cap sitiuation next season and their goal of winning a championship.

Ray haters? Just because I think it's reasonable to assume that Danny will be shopping him doesn't mean I "hate" Ray. Always "love" or "hate" on this board. I quite like Ray but we'll have to wait and see what a S&T will bring in til the off-season. Just as we'll have to wait and see what his asking price will be at the end of the contract and how it compares to what's out there. No one really knows right now.

^I should have put carriage return between the first sentence the the second. The "Ray-hater" wasn't directed at you, but at a lot of others on here...
