Not So Much For Grabbing The Reins
Stuckey’s supposed to fill the traded shoes of Chauncey Billups at the point guard position, but he continues to show that maybe he’s just a two guard out of position. His assist numbers per 36 minutes are down by nearly two full assists a game this year and he doesn’t seem to have the point guard’s keen sense of his surroundings when he has the ball and drives to the hoop. However, if he’s going to be a shooting guard, he needs to shoot better than 39%. Chauncey Billups has shot 44% in his career just once (42% career average), but he can get away with that because of the shots he creates for his teammates as their point guard. If Stuckey isn’t going to create shots, then he needs to make shots. It’s science.

via The Concerns About Rodney Stuckey – Motown String Music: The Pistons’ best lineup is actually their small ball with Bynum at point, Gordon at the 2 and Stuckey at the 3. Something tells me that’s probably not going to work out long-term for them. So Bynum’s pretty much a point, Gordon’s definitely a two, Stuckey’s probably a two, and Hamilton’s probably a two.

Seriously, Dumars, that trade button ain’t gonna push itself.

Arron Afflalo had 15 points, helping the Nuggets win their 16th straight regular-season home game, including all six this season.

Devin Harris, who's been hampered by a groin injury, and Rafer Alston both finished with 19 points to lead New Jersey.

DaJuan Summers: Playing time for the three Pistons rookies has been a bit sporadic all season, but over the weekend, Summers looked like he'd moved past first round pick Austin Daye and into the Pistons' rotation.

How long he'll stay is anyone's guess, but Summers found himself on the court during crunch time in a major comeback attempt that just fell short in Portland, coach John Kuester put Summers in the game when Charlie Villanueva fouled out in overtime against Utah and Summers concluded the road trip with 13 points in Phoenix.

Of the three rookies on the team -- Daye, Summers and Jonas Jerebko -- Summers is the most complete player. He's the best offensive option and he's physically the strongest. He also might be the most inconsistent, which was kind of the knock on him in college. But if the Pistons can get 10 or 15 solid minutes a night from him, his rookie season will be a win.

Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin dies at 85
Washington -- Abe Pollin, the Washington Wizards owner who brought an NBA championship to the nation's capital and later had the mettle to stand up to Michael Jordan, died Tuesday. He was 85.

His death was announced by his company, Washington Sports & Entertainment. No details were disclosed but Pollin suffered from progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder that impairs movement and balance. He had heart bypass surgery in 2005 and broke his pelvis two years later. "With Abe Pollin's passing, the NBA family has lost its most revered member, whose stewardship of the Wizards franchise, together with his wife Irene, has been a study in unparalleled dedication to the city of Washington," NBA commissioner David Stern said. "During his illness he fought with a determination and valor that will remain an inspiration to all."

Pollin was the NBA's longest-tenured owner. With his death, a group led by longtime AOL executive Ted Leonsis is poised to take ownership of a Washington-area sports empire that began when Pollin purchased the Baltimore Bullets in 1964.

Cavaliers at Pistons preview
The opponent — The Cavaliers (10-4) are in first place in the Central Division and have won 7 of their last 8 and 10 out their last 12 after starting the season out 0-2. This will be the first meeting between the Pistons and Cavs since Cleveland swept Detroit in convincing fashion in the first round of the playoffs last season. LeBron James is not letting his impending free agency at the end of the season distract him from having another MVP type year. James ranks among the league leaders in points (29.4 per game, 3rd in the league), rebounds (6.8, 39th), assists (8.1, 6th), steals (1.5, 26th) and field goal percentage (52.7 percent, 20th). Offseason acquisition Shaquille O’Neal (11.3 points, 6.9 rebounds) has missed the Cavaliers last five games with a shoulder injury, but is expected to return Wednesday against Detroit. O’Neal returned to practice on Monday. Point guard Mo Williams (17.3 points, 4.6 assists) is Cleveland’s second-best option offensively and free-agent pickup Anthony Parker (8.6 points) has fit in nicely in the Cavs system. Power forward J.J. Hickson has started the last eight games for Cleveland and is averaging 13.6 points and 3.5 rebounds since entering the starting five. Anderson Varejao has come off the bench the last two games after returning from a hip injury. Zydrunas Ilgauskas (7.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.29 blocks) is another low-post presence for Cleveland and will come off the bench if O’Neal returns.

Key matchup — Pistons Jonas Jerebko vs. Cavaliers LeBron James: Jerebko will face his toughest defensive assignment to date in James. Jerebko guarded Kobe Bryant at times last week, but will start out on James Wednesday night. James is able to hurt you in a number of ways and completely shutting him down is nearly impossible, but limiting him will go a long way for the Pistons. “I can’t guard him by myself every time, I got to get some help,” Jerebko admitted. “People staying in the lane and things like that. We are going to a good job with helping and I’m going to do a good job with my defense too. ... He can do a little bit of everything. Everybody knows who LeBron is, he can do everything. You just have to try and stay in front of him and not give him easy shots, and easy stuff so that’s what I’ll do.”

The skinny — The Pistons (5-9) have lost five straight after going 0-4 on last week’s West Coast road trip. Detroit will certainly be happy to be back at The Palace Wednesday night, but hosting Cleveland is hardly a welcome homecoming. Most of the Pistons current rotation, including four starters, were not with the team last season when it was swept by Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs, so that will have no factor in Wednesday’s game, but Detroit will be eager to show it’s still a threat to Cleveland in the Central Division. Pistons coach John Kuester said despite losing all four games on the West Coast trip, he feels the team gave a great effort and have a chance to turn things around Wednesday. “Any time you lose it’s not pleasurable,” Kuester said. “The players realize it’s always more fun to win and learn from your mistakes as opposed to lose and learn from them. That’s what we’re trying to do right now, get on the right track. Our guys gave great effort. I know the Phoenix game was not the way we had played most of the season — pretty much the entire season — and we’re looking forward to bouncing back.” It will also be an important game for Kuester, who was an assistant coach for Cleveland last season. Kuester was credited for Cleveland’s high-powered offense last season, but said the players deserve the credit. “We had a wonderful group to work with last year,” Kuester said. “The players deserve all the credit. They worked so hard as a unit and were so unselfish, and really did a wonderful job. They made all of our jobs easier.” The last few games of the West Coast trip Chris Wilcox and DaJuan Summers played more minutes than Kwame Brown and Austin Daye, who appeared to be ahead of Wilcox an Summers prior to the trip. Kuester said not to read too much into the minutes the last few games. “Chris Wilcox and all of our young players have worked real hard in practice and deserve an opportunity,” Kuester said. “We just gave Chris an opportunity the last few games, but Kwame is a big part of this picture of what we have, so don’t read into that. ... The same thing (with Austin).”
Prediction: Cavaliers 99, Pistons 92; Pemberton’s record: 8-6

Kobe Bryant scored 34 points, Pau Gasol added 11 points and 16 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers exploited a major size advantage in their fourth straight victory, 100-90 over the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.

Andrew Bynum added 17 points and eight rebounds on an injured right ankle, although he barely needed to jump while helping Los Angeles to a 60-36 rebounding advantage over New York's undersized front line.

Nate Robinson and Wilson Chandler scored 15 points apiece for the Knicks, who opened a three-game West Coast swing with their fifth straight loss to the defending NBA champions.

Wizards' Butler may return Friday
Caron Butler is being kept out of the Washington Wizards' game against the Philadelphia 76ers because of a sore right ankle.

Coach Flip Saunders said Tuesday an MRI showed fluid on the ankle and that Butler needed to get the extra rest so that he could possibly return for the Wizards' next game, Friday against Miami.

The Wizards were missing two starters for the game. Mike Miller is expected to be sidelined several weeks after straining his right calf Saturday against San Antonio.

Woeful Nets approach record for worst start
Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points, Nene added 17 and the Denver Nuggets dealt the New Jersey Nets their 14th straight loss to start the season with a 101-87 win Tuesday night. Arron Afflalo had 15 points, helping the Nuggets win their 16th straight regular-season home game, including all six this season.

At 0-14, the Nets are creeping closer to the NBA record of 17 consecutive losses to start a season, which is held by Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers. New Jersey will play in Portland on Wednesday night, the second leg of a grinding four-game trip out West.

Devin Harris, who's been hampered by a groin injury, and Rafer Alston both finished with 19 points to lead New Jersey.

Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva getting hot in a hurry
The shocking thing is how quickly they can score points. Pure, unfiltered, simply putting points on the scoreboard. Before looking up from the scoresheet, Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva will have scored a bundle of points in such quick fashion, it doesn't seem at all possible. But it is with these two. They have that capability. So efficiently, and easily, too, more easy than it really should be. Interestingly, neither knows when that hot streak is coming, when that bunch of points in a short period is going to appear. "You don't know when it's going to happen," said Villanueva, who scored 22 in a quarter against Orlando on Nov. 6. "I don't feel any different. "It just happens."

Now, if he makes a few in a row, maybe different types of shots, too, then Villanueva knows he could be on his way to one of those sizzling rolls. And those are fun. "I get a couple of those (shots), and the shots feel pretty good, well, then you know," said Villanueva, 25. "Once you get rolling, it's hard to be stopped." Gordon built a reputation with the Bulls for his ability to get hot in a hurry. In last season's first-round playoff series against the Celtics, Gordon's offensive spurts carried the Bulls to a seventh game before they lost a series few felt they had much chance to win.For Gordon, the key is to make sure the points come within the team framework. "You want the ball to be moved and make sure it's the best shot available," said Gordon, 26. "You don't want to get away from the offense."

To their teammates' credit, whenever it's been obvious either of the two players are entering a zone, they've made sure Villanueva or Gordon are being fed the ball -- a lot. "They've done a good job of recognizing it," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "It says a lot about our team." There were some doubts when the Pistons signed Gordon and Villanueva last summer as free agents. Some analysts doubted how they'd fit in on the current roster and questioned supposed weak defensive games. Though neither will make any all-defensive team anytime soon, both have shown to be at least average, and with a desire to improve on that end. As for their offense, it's been absolutely scorching at times.

No munchkins here
So much has been made of the Pistons' three-guard lineup this season, but how about that "tall" or "big" lineup that Kuester used last week out West?

With Rodney Stuckey (or Will Bynum ) at guard, and the likes of Ben Wallace , Villanueva (or Jonas Jerebko ), Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers on the floor with him, the group got back into games against the Lakers and Trail Blazers.

Kuester was quick to point out, though, that Summers (big guard) and Daye (small forward) actually were playing their normal positions in the setup. "It just so happens they were a little bit taller (than players normally in that spot)," Kuester said. "I laugh when (people said) it was the big lineup."

Home cooking
The Pistons are home for seven of their next nine games.

With a losing streak that stands at five, this could be a good opportunity for the team to reverse its fortunes dramatically. "We need to use that to our advantage," Gordon said of the upcoming homestand. "Get our rest, rely on our crowd and try to will ourselves to get a win."

Not including Sunday's blowout loss to the Suns, Gordon felt the Pistons were in position to win any of the previous West Coast road losses. "We'd been playing well on the road, staying in games and giving ourselves a shot at the end," Gordon said. "Hopefully being at home will put us over the hump."

No offense
For all the talk of the Pistons being a dynamic offensive team before the season began, it hasn't showed up statistically (injuries to Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince haven't helped).

The Pistons ranked 26th in the league in scoring entering Tuesday's games.

1. Phoenix ... 110.4
2. Golden State ... 109.6
3. Denver ... 107.9
4. Toronto ... 106.3
5. Atlanta ... 105.5
26. Detroit ... 92.5
