What in the world happened to TJ Ford?

Post#1 » by Hobo Gonzolez » Wed Nov 25, 2009 1:37 pm

Raptor fan here. back when TJ was ont he raptors he was probably my favorite player. Whenever people said Calderon was better than him I would always stick up for TJ. However, even though I still despise Calderon, I am done sticking up for TJ. He just hasn't shown me anything at all since coming to Indiana. I used to think he was an allstar, now I am saying he will be an average starter at best.
Does anybody here have any excuses for his play?

T.J. Ford doesn't care about black people... or white people... or anyone wearing a Pacers jersey that doesn't say Ford on the back.

Well there are two types of selfishness. There is the in game selfishness and there is selfishness off the court. I dunno which type you are refering too, but I know in Toronto TJ Ford was falsely accused of both of these things. If you are referring to his game style, then he must be playing differently then he was in Toronto. Off the court incidents I could believe if there is a specific incident you can mention that brought you to this conlusion.

He's a one-on-one PG, who is more scorer than passer, doesn't shoot the three particularly well and can't finish around the rim.

Ask TJFordIsGod. O, wait he has been MIA. Ford is just selfish, and cares about his stats. It is bad when your center has more assists than your starting pg.

You obviously missed what I was referring to there.

To break it down Barney style... TJ FORD IS A SELFISH PLAYER WHO BASICALLY HAS BLINDERS ON WHEN HE'S ON THE COURT. HE SEES THE BASKET AND NOT MUCH ELSE. THAT IS THE CAUSE FOR HIS STRUGGLES AS A MEMBER OF THE INDIANA PACERS.

He's a point guard with no point guard traits. He's basically an undersized 2 guard who can't shoot the three and can't finish at the rim. His game is limited to the mid-range, elbow jumper and jumping in the air indecisively, which 70% of the time results in a turnover.

I'm not sure if he was this bad in Toronto or if this is just Jim O'Brien's system that's causing this, but this is what we're left to work with. We can't complain, though. He helped move Jermaine O'neal's contract and brought Roy Hibbert with him. At the end of the day, that's his biggest value to this team.

Now we're just counting down the days till his contract expires...

This says it pretty well. The only thing I would add is the Pacers aren't going anywhere as long as TJ is getting major minutes at the point. Unfortunately, there's a reason Earl Watson has never claimed a starting job just like there's a reason keeps giving his up.

True that I have been disappointed with TJ this season, but I'm starting to think that it is just this particular type of system that he doesn't fit in.
I mean if we think about it, we are a 3 point shooting team and that is not TJ's strength.
He is more of a scoring PG then a pass PG, and given that in terms of scorers we have Danny, Brush, Murphy and now probably Dahntay ahead of him on the scoring option list, kind of makes TJ be a little aggressive and a ball hog to a degree.

I still think he can come around and be a good player on this team, or perhaps he will be a good player on another team. Don't forget that he averaged a high number of assists in college.

You thought I didn't understand the source material?

Anyway the stuff people have been saying in this thread sounds like some criticism that I have heard before. Except in the past when he was criticised for this, it was largely based on a false premise. I dunno if he has changed his mentality or it is the system like some people were saying. All I know is that he is capable of playing at an all-star level. Basically, I wouldn't give up on him yet.

In this offense we don't need our pg to hold the ball long, if TJ can adjust he'll be fine.

He was pretty effective, but fragile, in Toronto.

^ Cuz Toronto requires their point guard to actually play point guard, not throw the ball to the wing and run away. Jameer Nelson would b a perfect fit.
