Would Daugherty have helped?
Let's say the Cavs had drafted Len Bias. I'd assume the Celtics would have drafted Brad Daugherty. Do you think this would have changed anything?

What if we got the first pick and drafted Tim Duncan
What if we didn't trade Al Jefferson
What if we didn't get Ray and KG
Honestly, who cares
Let's focus on the team right now

I'd say Celtsfan1980 cares considering he made the thread. Don't shoot down a conversation just because you don't want to participate in it.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
of course he would have helped---considering we got NOTHING from that draft---except a LOT of pain and bad memories....and, our pick in 1987 died while in his prime too.
Things happen for a reason I guess---maybe some people lived because Lenny died...I have my own selfish reason of not wanting the Lakers to catch us in Championships---so, I'll always think back to what might have been...Sure, we might have 2-3 MORE titles right now, but the Lakers got screwed when Magic had to retire early.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
Probably.
Doubt Bias would have felt the need to celebrate like that if he got drafted by Cleveland.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
Yes he would have helped. He would have taken in Walton's role just to get step by step to the starter C role in a couple of years. Along with the BIG 3 the Celtics would have been too hard to handle inside and probably would have won in 1987.
He was known as a soft player, but as it seems McHale arrived with the same kind of fame, just to play in a broken foot precisely in 1987, I'm sure he would have got better an tougher in Boston, just outside the spotlight where he didn't look any confortable and under the BIG 3 wings.
But, if certainly a bunch of bigs like Parish, McHale, Daugherty and Walton would have been crazy, Bird would have had to carry to many minutes and we all know what happened. Maybe in 1988 or 1989 Daugherty would have been good enough to trade McHale/Parish for Aguirre, but that's a different story.

Not as badly as we got screwed by Stern and the NBA...no compensation and having to carry Lewis on the cap for the duration of his contract after he died (only team in NBA history with a dead player that has had to do that...). For Christ's sake, Miami got compensation when Mourning had to RETIRE due to his health...and then he came back! **** Stern and the NBA...

It's still 17 to 11!!!!

I can't afford cable these days so I can't watch the Celtics much. I can't contribute much to this board so a lot of my posts are about previous time periods. Obviously Daugherty was injury-prone but I'm just curious as to whether people think he would have helped at all over those first five years or so.

Yeah I was always miffed about that as well, although I don't feel angst towards stern as much these days I do dislike the the out come but at that time the celts were getting no help from the league.
I blame the skull and bones

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
If the Celts had ended up getting Daugherty back in 86, I probably would be jumping into my Delorean (just got a new flux capacitor installed) to convince Red to trade Daugherty to Cleveland for an unprotected lottery pick in 2003.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
Remember that Daugherty's back ended his career prematurely cutting his prime years significantly. Though assuming we still drafted Reggie that would have been a nice little combo to carry us into the early 90's.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
What if Len Bias never died?
What if David Robinson did end up signing with us?
What if Reggie Lewis never died?
How many championships would we have won with that as our new big three?

I'd be curious as to what you're talking about too. I've read several Celtic books and I've never read that before.

Re: Would Daugherty have helped?
I can't remember it exactly, I know there was a topic on here about it not too long ago. Something about Robinson taking two years away from basketball in the military after the NBA draft and signing with a large market team after that. IIRC, it came down to what agent he chose, because he was close with three different guys. One wanting him to sign in San Antonio, one wanting him to go to the Lakers, and one wanting him to go to the Celtics.

And a quick google search brings that up if you want to check it out.

yeah I remember that, way what if but still a good read, I usually stay away from those ?'s but I'd add two rings for Bias, two for Mr. Robinson and one for Lewis. making that total grand total of the missing years with real years to 22 banners.
