No Shaq tonight for Cleveland against skidding Pistons
That's right, Shaq Diesel is out for a sixth consecutive game with a bad shoulder. Palace fans will now have to wait until March 16th to see the big man in person.

In Shaq's absence, expect LeBron James to shoot about a hundred times tonight. Knowing that Pistons rookie Jonas Jerebko is the guy assigned to guard him early on, odds are high that James is salivating at the tought of torching the Pistons for another 40+ point game.

Detroit desperately needs a win tonight to snap their five game losing streak. A loss, however, would drop the Pistons to 5-10, making Thursday's game against the Clippers look like a must-win. The game tips at 8:00pm ET on Fox Sports Detroit.

Not exactly the opponent the Pistons wanted after returning from their brutal road trip. The Cavaliers have won seven of the eight. On the bright side (maybe?), Shaquille O’Neal will miss the game with an injured shoulder. Another bright spot (probably?), Cleveland plays at a fairly slow pace.
•Check out Daily Dime Live during the game. I won’t be chatting, but the talk might turn to the Pistons at some point. If not, you can at least keep up with other NBA action.

Report: Iverson to retire
Allen Iverson is planning to retire from the NBA, nationally syndicated radio host and Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Stephen A. Smith reports.

Iverson's representatives have told Smith of Iverson's plans on Wednesday. "I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association," Iverson said in a statement on StephanA.com, Smith Web site. "I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn't help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case. "I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.

Iverson, who has played 14 seasons in the NBA, played three games with the Memphis Grizzlies but complained about coming off the bench. The team then gave him a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. The two sides eventually agreed to part ways and Iverson was waived.

Chandler (back) returns to action after missing two games
Charlotte Bobcats center Tyson Chandler will play against Toronto after missing two games with back spasms.

Chandler had practiced the past two days and coach Larry Brown said before Wednesday's game that he would start out guarding Raptors big man Chris Bosh.

Chandler is averaging just 6.1 points and 6.5 rebounds since being acquired in the offseason from New Orleans in exchange for Emeka Okafor.

Close to return
After seeing a hand specialist Monday, C.J. Miles said he plans to start practicing again next week, the final step in his return from left thumb surgery. "I've been doing a lot, so hopefully it shouldn't take me but a couple practices before I feel like I can play again," Miles said.

Miles went through exercises to help stretch the ligament that he ruptured in the preseason. He was fitted for a splint and has gone through shooting drills in recent days with his thumb taped. The last thing for Miles is to see how his thumb will hold up in game action.

Kyle Korver , meanwhile, pushed his left knee in practice Monday and said it was "really sore" afterward before feeling better Tuesday. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, though. "It's just part of the process, is what they tell me," Korver said. "It's just your knee trying to get back into shape. As long as it doesn't hurt too bad the next day, you're on the right track." Korver wouldn't commit to a specific target date to resume practicing or make his return, but did joke, "I'm running out of sport coats to wear to the games."

Awaiting Tony
Tony Allen (rehab from right ankle surgery) could be back on the active roster as soon as tonight’s game against Philadelphia

“Tony looked good (yesterday),” Rivers said. “I think for him it’s going to be a confidence thing. (Monday) I didn’t think he looked good, and today he looked terrific. He was exploding to the basket. So I think he’s very close. We’ll wait until (today) and see how he feels.” . . .

Shaq sidelined for sixth straight game
Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal will be sidelined for Wednesday's game against Detroit because of an injured shoulder, the sixth game in a row he will miss.

O'Neal hasn't played since a Nov. 12 win over Miami.

The Cavs are being cautious with O'Neal after acquiring him from Phoenix in an offseason trade. They are trying to keep him healthy for the second half of the season and playoffs.

Cavaliers-Pistons Preview
The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Shaquille O'Neal with the playoffs in mind, that's why the big man is set to miss a sixth straight game with an injured shoulder. Hardly looking like a postseason contender of late, the Detroit Pistons don't need any more obstacles to overcome. The Cavaliers last left The Palace of Auburn Hills with a first-round sweep in April, and they won't get O'Neal back Wednesday night as they seek an eighth straight victory over the reeling Pistons.Cleveland's big offseason acquisition averaged 11.3 points in his first nine games with his fifth NBA team before straining his shoulder. Not wanting to risk the 37-year-old center's health too early, the Cavaliers (10-4) refused to give O'Neal a cortisone injection to treat the injury, instead opting to let him rest. O'Neal was back at practice Monday and hoped to play against the Pistons (5-9), losers of five in a row. The Cavaliers have won seven of eight, going 4-1 without O'Neal. LeBron James has been the catalyst as usual, averaging 34.3 points and 9.3 assists in his last four games while shooting 58.3 percent.

Though James had a game-high 32 points and nine assists Saturday as Cleveland rallied past Philadelphia 97-91, much of the postgame talk focused on the defense, which allowed 10 fourth-quarter points as Cleveland overcame a six-point deficit. "That's where we make our mark at," James said. "We just lock down. ... When we're playing defense like that at a high level, it's hard to beat us." James averaged 32.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 7.5 assists as Cleveland held Detroit to 78.0 points per game in a four-game sweep to open last season's playoffs. Including that series, the Cavs have won seven straight over the Pistons by an average of 14.1 points. Cleveland had assistant John Kuester guiding its offense during those victories, but now Kuester, largely credited with the Cavs' improved ball movement and spacing during their 66-win season in 2008-09, is the head coach in Detroit. Kuester has had some bad breaks running the Pistons. Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) have played a combined four games, leaving free agent acquisitions Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to lead their new team.

They haven't had much success lately. Gordon went 1 of 16 from the field and scored a season-low five points in a loss to Dallas on Nov. 15, then the Pistons were swept during a four-game western road trip that concluded with a 117-91 loss at Phoenix on Sunday. "Until this game, we lost three games that we can learn a lot from," said reserve guard Will Bynum, who's averaged 17.7 points on 57.4 percent shooting in his last six games. "... We just have to get things back going and get back home and have the fans behind us. We should be fine." The Pistons' biggest problem has been finding offense inside with former Cavalier Ben Wallace and Jonas Jerebko starting up front. Detroit is among the league's bottom five teams in points in the paint (36.1 per game), and Cleveland (34.1) allows the fewest. The Pistons last lost six in a row during an eight-game skid from Feb. 8-25.

Report: Former Piston Allen Iverson will retire
Allen Iverson is set to retire from the NBA, according to an online report. Commentator Stephen A. Smith published a statement on his Web site today attributed to Iverson. It said Iverson plans to retire but also that “I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.”The statement also said Iverson has tremendous love for the game and the desire to play. The 10-time All-Star played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways.

It was the second straight ugly ending for Iverson, who was unhappy last season playing for the Pistons. He was upset that Detroit coach Michael Curry and Memphis’ Lionel Hollins used the former MVP as a reserve. The New York Knicks considered signing Iverson last week after he cleared waivers, before deciding he would take too much playing time away from younger players they are trying to develop.

The Knicks seemed to be the only team who would consider bringing in Iverson, so there was no guarantee he’d play in the NBA this season, anyway. Still, the announcement today came as a surprise to George Karl, who coached Iverson in Denver. “I think he still has something left to give some team out there. If that’s his decision, he’ll go down in history, I think, as the greatest little guard ever to play the game of basketball,” Karl said. “I was happy to have him for a couple years, and hopefully, our paths will cross. But I have a sneaky feeling that somewhere along the way, an injury or a circumstance with a team will open that window back up.”

Williams out with broken jaw
Philadelphia guard Louis Williams will miss Wednesday's game against Boston with a fractured jaw.

Williams was hurt in Tuesday night's loss against Washington and the team is uncertain when he'll be back in the lineup. "He's going to be evaluated extensively [Thursday]," coach Eddie Jordan said before his team's game against Boston. "That's when we'll have a better indication of his timetable."

Williams, who was elbowed in the jaw, missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer that rimmed out in the 108-107 loss. X-rays taken earlier Wednesday revealed the fracture.

Michael Beasley dunked a missed shot by Dwyane Wade with 1.6 seconds remaining, lifting the Miami Heat to a 99-98 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

A desperation heave by Vince Carter wasn't close on the other end, and he tumbled into the stands off balance. All this came after Jason Williams missed two free throws that could have put Orlando ahead by three.

Beasley had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Wade overcame a slow start to finish with 24 points to help Miami rally from an 11-point deficit.

Ben Gordon (ankle) injured vs. Cavs
The news keeps getting worse for the Pistons.

Shooting guard Ben Gordon is out for the rest of tonight's game against the Cavs because of a sprained left ankle. He suffered the injury late in the second quarter on a drive to the basket. Gordon was able to remain in the game momentarily after a 20-second timeout, but had to be helped to the locker room at halftime.

If he misses any significant time, he will join Rip Hamilton (right ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) on the sidelines. Rookie Austin Daye got the start at shooting guard to start the second half.

Pistons guard Ben Gordon injures ankle in loss to Cavaliers
Life has been tough without Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. It would be even tougher without Ben Gordon. The Pistons found themselves even more shorthanded Wednesday night after Gordon left the game with an ankle injury in the first half of a 98-88 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was the sixth consecutive loss for the Pistons, who will try to end that streak Friday when they host the Los Angeles Clippers.

Gordon injured his ankle while driving the lane and colliding with LeBron James. He returned to the game after a timeout to shoot a pair of free throws, but he left at that point and did not return. The Pistons had a tough time stopping James, who finished with 34 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. But James didn’t carry the entire scoring load as the Cavaliers had four other players in double-figures: Mo Williams (14 points) Anthony Parker (13 points), Daniel Gibson (13) and Jamario Moon (11).Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 25 points and six rebounds, while Charlie Villanueva added 19 points and eight rebounds. Jason Maxiell scored 10 points, while Ben Wallace had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Cavaliers led by as many as 17 points in the second half before the Pistons rallied in the fourth quarter. Detroit scored five consecutive points, the final one on a free throw by Wallace, to cut the deficit to 93-88 with 1 minute, 13 seconds left. But James made two free throws on the next possession for the Cavaliers, who held on from there.Stuckey had 12 points in the fourth quarter.
