Good player. Decent price. Doesn't make us better.

Will keep us in the close games, which will do wonders for the young pitchers.

I'm shocked Johnny Mac is back. He has really been dicked around and mistreated by the JP regime. I guess it's a sign that the AA regime will be less dick-ish and more open.

Still surprised though. A good fielder and clubhouse guy like him are not a dime a dozen. Maybe it's his hitting. He's got to work on that because (it's like deja vu) the SS position is up for grabs again.

C'mon now there isn't really any "working on his hitting" to be had for MacDonald. He's 34, and at this point he is what he is, and that's assuming he's not already declining.

It's a fair contract though. Now we just have to wait and see if the guy's going to start. I'd say the odds of that are about 40% assuming the team doesn't get a major league ready SS for Halladay.

What?

John McDonald is one of the worst hitters in major league baseball. His vaunted defense has also taken a step backwards. The fact that this guy is even still in the majors, let alone now making $3 million over 2 years is ridiculous.

This signing makes next to no sense. McDonald is a major league minimum player.

This first move by Anthopolous is not building any confidence.

Pointless. No point in this team overpaying role players in a rebuilding phase. More bad money spent. You can find any number of utility players to do a similar job at close to the league minimum.

Nobody dicked around Johnny Mac. He's simply not a good baseball player. When we gave him a 2 year 3.8 mil, it was the opposite of dicking him around, because nobody else was going to do that.

The idea that he 'needs to work on his hitting' is hilarious. At 35, he is only going the other way. And he's not going to do wonders for the young pitchers, either, because he hasn't been a great defender since we gave him that extension. He is an average one, but there are better average D poor O shortstops on the market for cheaper.

I'm not going to say it's an awful deal, because it is too small to be awful. I am going to say it is a stupid deal, because no one else was going to offer anything near it, either in years or in money.

(I let the great clubhouse guy thing slide assuming you were happy with the Millar and Eckstein signings. If not, I'm calling bull there too.)

I dunno man, I side with lie cheat and steal on this one. Johnny Mac was dicked around by the organization. I can remember him re-signing here twice thinking he was going to be the starter, only to have Royce fricken Clayton get acquired and then handed the starting job and i forget who it was the second time... maybe eckstein/scutaro? I'm not advocating that he's the answear by any stretch, I'm not even saying he should be the starter for next year's terriable team, I just think that twice this guy has signed when we had no other options, he listended to JP talking about how it's going to be great for Johnny Mac to finally get a chance to show what he can do as the day to day starter, and then to be relegated to bench duty when we signed some other scrub...

I'm not saying he should be a starter or anything, just that I think he's signed his last 2 contacts at a time when we had no other shortstop and probably under the assurance that he was going to be the starter, only to be relegated to the bench. Now we can all say, oh well who cares, and tough luck, johnny mac sucks and isn't a starter, and that's all true, I'm just surprised he'd come back here again, though now he must be resided to the fact that no matter what, johnny mac isn't going to be a starter anywhere in the majors.

The only thing we can be at all certain of is that Johnny Mac signed his last two contracts because we gave him more money than anyone else. Everything else is pure, baseless speculation. (Plus, you know, he was the starting SS in 2006 and 2007, so there is that.)
