LeBron scores 34 in Cavs' 98-88 win vs. Pistons
LeBron James scored 12 of his 34 points in the first quarter, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers build a cushion it used to cruise to a 98-88 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

James' strong start gave the Cavs a nine-point lead to start the second quarter. Reserve Daniel Gibson and Mo Williams combined to score 18 points in the second quarter to put them ahead by 18 at halftime.

When the Pistons pulled within 10 midway through the fourth quarter, James responded with a 3-pointer and a double-pump dunk. Detroit cut its deficit to eight points with 4:15 left and James made plays at both ends of the court to give the Cavs another double-digit lead.

Report: Allen Iverson set to retire
Allen Iverson is set to retire from the NBA, according to an online report. It said Iverson plans to retire but also that "I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level." The statement also said Iverson has tremendous love for the game and the desire to play. "His legacy would be huge," Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star LeBron James said. "He's one of the best when you talk about guys 6-foot and under in the game of basketball. He played injured and he played hard every single night. I don't think it should end this way, but if it does, he's left a lot of great things behind." The 10-time All-Star played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways. It was the second straight ugly ending for Iverson, who was unhappy last season playing for the Pistons. He was upset that Detroit coach Michael Curry and Memphis' Lionel Hollins used the former MVP as a reserve.

The New York Knicks considered signing Iverson last week after he cleared waivers, before deciding he would take too much playing time away from younger players they are trying to develop. The Knicks seemed to be the only team who would consider bringing in Iverson, so there was no guarantee he'd play in the NBA this season, anyway. Still, the announcement Wednesday came as a surprise to George Karl, who coached Iverson in Denver. "I think he still has something left to give some team out there. If that's his decision, he'll go down in history, I think, as the greatest little guard ever to play the game of basketball," Karl said."I was happy to have him for a couple years and hopefully our paths will cross. But I have a sneaky feeling that somewhere along the way an injury or a circumstance with a team will open that window back up." One of the NBA's great scorers, Iverson entered this season with a career average of 27.1 points that ranked fifth all time. Yet there was almost no interest in him this summer before he went to the Grizzlies on a one-year deal.Iverson can still score, as he averaged 17.4 points with the Pistons last season. Yet he has made it clear he doesn't view himself as a backup, which has likely hurt his chances of signing with a contending team.

The 6-foot guard thanked former players and coaches in the statement, plus the fans in Memphis and Philadelphia, where he spent his best years. He said stepping away would allow him to spend more time with his wife and kids. He also said he thought he could still play after 14 seasons. "I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn't help my team the way that I was accustomed to," it read. "However, that is not the case." Messages were left for Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, and his business manager, Gary Moore. If this is the end for Iverson, he leaves with four scoring titles and a playoff scoring average of 29.7 points that ranks second only to Michael Jordan. He led the 76ers to the 2001 NBA finals but never won a championship. Or he could choose to wait and see if a team in need of a scorer comes looking for him later this season. "I don't ever believe anyone retires until they get to the point they have to," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "He had a great career if it is true, but I still think he has more to offer."

David West had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the New Orleans Hornets defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 102-99 in overtime Wednesday night.

Rookie point guard Darren Collison scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer to tie it with 7.5 seconds left in regulation. Collison also stole the ball from fellow rookie Brandon Jennings and drew a foul late in overtime, then hit two free throws to help New Orleans extend its home overtime winning streak to 11.

Luke Ridnour scored a season-high 23 points and Hakim Warrick added 22 points and 10 rebounds for Milwaukee, which lost its second straight when Michael Redd's attempted game-tying 3 bounced out as time expired in overtime.

Tim Duncan had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs, who used a 22-3 run spanning the third and fourth quarters for their season-best third consecutive victory.

One night after a season-high, 37-point performance in a 111-103 victory at Dallas, Ellis topped it by scoring 42 points on 16-of-25 shooting to tie his career high.

Final Score: Cleveland 98, Detroit 88
LeBron James poured in a game-high 34 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out seven assists, as the Cleveland Cavaliers handled the struggling Detroit Pistons, 98-88, at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Mo Williams added 14 points and eight assists for the Cavaliers, who have won three in a row and eight of nine. Anthony Parker and Daniel Gibson each chipped in 13 points for Cleveland, which shot 50 percent from the field. Rodney Stuckey ended with 25 points and six rebounds for the Pistons, who have dropped six consecutive games. Charlie Villanueva tallied 19 points and eight rebounds for Detroit, which shot 39.2 percent from the floor. The Pistons were without guard Ben Gordon for the second half after he sustained a sprained left ankle in the opening half. Gordon had nine points before leaving the contest.

With the score tied at 17, the Cavs went on an 11-2 run to close out the first quarter. J.J. Hickson started the spurt with a three-point play and James capped things off with a pair of layups for a 28-19 lead after 12 minutes. Ahead 50-40, Cleveland finished the second period with a 10-2 flurry. Williams drilled a pair of three-pointers during the run that Jamario Moon ended with a deuce for a 60-42 margin at the break. The Cavaliers maintained a comfortable lead throughout the third stanza and held an 80-66 margin heading to the fourth. Detroit slowly chipped away at Cleveland's lead in the final period, and a Ben Wallace free throw cut the gap to 93-88 with 1:13 remaining. The Cavs made 5- of-6 foul shots down the stretch to seal the victory.

Game Notes
Cleveland took three of four matchups with Detroit a year ago and has won the last four in the series. The Pistons, however, are 13-4 in the past 17 meetings as the host...The Cavs play at the Bobcats Friday, while the Pistons welcome the Clippers to town.

Amare Stoudemire scored 18 of his 28 points during a torrid third quarter and the Phoenix Suns beat the Memphis Grizzlies 126-111 Wednesday night for their 15th consecutive home victory.

In the third quarter, the scintillating, high-scoring Suns hit their first 12 field-goal attempts and finished the quarter 17 for 20.

The Suns are 12-3, the best record in the NBA. They are the only team in the league to score at least 100 points in every game this season. They also have scored at least 100 points in 32 consecutive home games. Their 126 points against Memphis were a season high -- home or away.

James crowns Pistons
Hours before Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, coach John Kuester was talking about what makes LeBron James such a premier player. Kuester was an assistant coach in Cleveland last season and got an understanding of what fuels James. It was James, to no one's surprise, who ignited Cleveland in its 98-88 victory Wednesday over the gutty Pistons, who made a customary late game run. "He would drive hard on his mom," said Kuester, talking about the competitiveness that James has. "It doesn't matter who he's playing against, he's the type of competitor he wants to win and he'll do what it takes to win. "I'd like to say he's going to take it easy but I have a gut feeling he's not." No, James didn't take it easy. James had 34 points and he got help from Mo Williams (14 points) and Daniel Gibson (13 points) for the Cavaliers (11-4). Rodney Stuckey scored 25 and Charlie Villanueva 19 for the Pistons (5-10), who lost their sixth straight game.

The eventual loss could be more than just one game, though. While driving for a layup, Ben Gordon suffered a left ankle sprain with 3:13 left in the second quarter. Gordon didn't play the rest of the second half. Gordon crashed to the floor and immediately began grabbing for his ankle. He returned to miss both free throw attempts, then immediately was taken out by coach John Kuester. The Pistons didn't immediately release the severity of Gordon's injury. Losing Gordon -- who had nine points and four assists in 17 minutes -- and is the Pistons' leading scorer, would be a terrible blow to a team already missing Richard Hamilton (severely sprained right ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (small ruptured disc). The Pistons needed all of them against the Cavaliers. They shot a ragged 39 percent from the field and were only 67 percent (21-of-31) from the free throw line.

Cleveland took a 28-19 lead after one quarter and extended it to 60-42 at halftime. It led 80-66 after three quarters. Every time the Pistons did appear on the verge of a run, James made a big play. The Pistons cut the lead to 82-72 on an Austin Daye fast break dunk with 8:23 to play. James then came down on the next series and sank a 3-point shot with Rodney Stuckey closely defending him. Shortly after, a thunderous James dunk driving through the lane made it 87-72 with just over six minutes left. Still, the Pistons cut the lead to five points, 93-88, on a Ben Wallace free throw with 1:15 left. But James came down and made two free throws to push the lead back to seven. "He's a special talent," Kuester said. "He's an unselfish superstar. "That's one thing, having been around him and around that team, they are as unselfish a group as I've been around."

Will Bynum no Look Pass to Ausitn Daye for the Dunk
The Pistons just lost a hard fought battle to Cleveland 98-88, to take their losing streak to 6 in a row. Not only did the Pistons lose the game, they lost Ben Gordon after he spained his ankle in the second quarter.

So not to ruin your Thanksgiving Holiday, I’ll give this little Dunk to you.

Happy Holiday!

Former Pistons Allen Iverson is set to retire from the NBA, according to an online report.

Gordon is day to day
The Pistons are saying Ben Gordon is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle. They're off on Thanksgiving, no practice or game. We'll find out more Friday but I would doubt that Gordon will play, judging by the way he was moving around. That's three key players down. You can't stay competitive in the NBA for very long with so much talent sitting on the bench hurt

The New Jersey Nets moved a loss closer to the record for the NBA's worst start to a season on Wednesday night when they dropped their 15th straight game, 93-83 to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Greg Oden continued a recent run of strong play with 18 points and eight rebounds for the Blazers, who have won 10 of their last 12. Portland has won six straight at home.

The NBA record is 17 straight losses to start a season, set by the 1988-89 expansion Miami Heat and matched by the Los Angeles Clippers in the lockout-shortened 1999 season.

Shaquille O'Neal won't play tonight against Pistons
Cleveland Cavaliers star center Shaquille O'Neal will not play against the Pistons on Wednesday night at The Palace (Fox Sports Detroit, 8 p.m.). O'Neal has an injured shoulder. This will be the sixth consecutive game he has missed. O'Neal received treatment on the shoulder during the Cavaliers' shootaround Wednesday at The Palace and did not work out with the team.

"He won't play tonight," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said after shootaround. "He wants to play, but it's my decision (that he won't)." O'Neal was injured when trying to block a shot by Miami's Michael Beasley on Nov. 12. He won't say which shoulder is injured.

Pistons-Cavs Game Recap
What Happened
A valiant effort to make a game out of a horror show. The Cavs got off to a ridiculous start from the floor, and carried that to victory. We also saw an injury to our best player and quite a bit of fouling by Croonch.

The Good
The Pistons demonstrated that they have the tenacity and athleticism to lock down on defense… When they feel like it. The Pistons offered yet another late hour effort, closing to within five with two minutes to play. Rodney Stuckey led the charge, scoring 25 points overall and continually exploiting mismatches.

The Bad
Will Bynum was horrendous, shooting 1-13 from the floor. This on a night when the Pistons could have used a solid effort. Ben Gordon sprained his ankle, which is bad. The Cavs were allowed to score at will in the first half before Detroit clamped down.

The MVP
Stuckey, although he managed zero assists to go with his 25 points. That said, to whom should he have passed the ball? Outside of Stuckey, the team shot an anemic 23-63 from the field, and 13-23 from the free throw line.

The Candied Yams Unsung Hero
Jason Maxiell. He seems to be pulling out of his slump, and registered 10 points to go with four rebounds in just 16 minutes. Not sure why we didn’t lean on him a bit more, but I am never sure why we don’t lean on him more.
