This is one of those Brett Favre retirements! He will come back. Celts atleast had a vote and since it wasnt unanimous he didn't get signed, well at least according to CSNNE

Personal life aside, just speaking bball, I think AI was arguably the best guy his size to ever play the game, and pound for pound, one of the toughest. He is a first vote HOFer.

I still would like to have him win a ring with us this year.

Probably wanted to keep his career PPG at 27.0 - top 5 all time. God forbid he slips down the list at the cost of getting a ring as a bench player on a contender.

I'd place him 2nd best 6 footer, behind Isiah Thomas.

This will be a short-lived retirement me thinks. It's kind of a preemptive strike on his part seeing that no team is going to be signing him in a while. He's not going to be left out there hanging and waiting for something to happen. This guy has too much pride to back-up another player, there is no way he is going to wait at the every beck and call of some organisation. He'll be back when the timing is right.

Other recently retired players who were supposedly 6'0'' or 6'1'' who were as good or better than Iverson include I. Thomas, M. Price, K. Johnson, Stockton, T. Hardaway...

The best "short" point guards today are Paul, Parker and Rondo. And Nelson, Felton, Ford and Jennings.

Immediately after word came out that Allen Iverson had announced he was retiring, sources close to him told Stephen A. Smith he was having a change of heart.

"I think he just wants to feel wanted again," one of Iverson's confidants told me Wednesday night.

Said Iverson to NBA, "It's been almost 24 hours, I was goin' crazy baby! Take me back!"

Bonsa

Maybe Isaiah. Maybe Stockton because of his incredible assist record. Maybe Cousy but that was a very different era. But no one else comes close to AI when you consider guts, talent, scoring ability, and pound for pound toughness - at his height and weight. Not even close.

People forget because of some of his off the court antics. From a pure bball standpoint, he was one of a kind.

As said, I'm an Iverson fan. But I wouldn't take him (young or old) over Thomas, Stockton or K. Johnson who was underrated. Fans recall his injuries, but when he was healthy. He was one of the best point guards at that time bar none.

Iverson wouldn't have been Iverson (the multi-scoring champion, the regular season MVP or reach the NBA Finals) if not for Larry Brown or him seeing that he was a scorer and not a facilitator. He gave Iverson a lot of freedom with the ball.

What I like about certain point guards over the years are all the things they'd did besides simply score.
