Rookie uprising
If Daye and Jerebko both wind up in the starting lineup, and DaJuan Summers continues as one of the first players off the bench, that'll mean all three rookies will have prominent roles for the first time this season.

"We're asking a lot from our rookies, especially because of our injuries," Charlie Villanueva said. "They've been playing great, playing terrific. They're playing with a lot of confidence and hopefully they'll keep getting better."

Said Kuester: "This is where guys like Jonas, DaJuan and Austin find out this isn't the summer league. They were getting 18-20 points there and we know they can put it in the basket here (regular season). We have to trust those guys."

Slam dunks
Bynum blamed himself for the loss to the Cavaliers. He was 1-of-13 from the field in 31 minutes, scored four points and had three turnovers.

"I can't play like that when Ben goes out and expect us to win," Bynum said. "We put too much on Stuckey out there and that was my fault."

Clippers center Chris Kaman , a Grand Rapids native and Central Michigan alum, has been speculated as a possible trade option for the Pistons, if he were available.

But Kaman, averaging 19.8 points and 8.5 rebounds, could be too valuable right now for the Clippers to trade.

Thanks, But No Thanks: Cavs 98, Pistons 88
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. One thing I appreciate on this glorious holiday is the "never say die" attitude the Pistons display in games where they look completely out of it. However, I'd be much more thankful if the Pistons could sustain that effort throughout the course of a game, as opposed to the 'too little, too late' surges they have late in games. That was the story for the Pistons on Wednesday night against the Cavaliers in their first game back from a tough west coast trip. Detroit fell behind by 18 to the Cavs after the first half, a deficit they weren't able to recover from (even with a strong second half performance).

The Cavs were shooting out of their minds in the first half, hitting 61% of their shots. I felt the Pistons did a decent job answering the Cavs' baskets to keep the game within 10 in the first quarter, or else it would have achieved ugly status a lot earlier. Like the Pistons have been prone to do lately when falling behind big, they nearly surmounted the Cavs double-digit lead late in the game, pulling to within five with just a couple minutes remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Cavs hit the big shots when they needed them and Detroit fell to 5-10 on the season, losing their sixth straight game.

Rodney Stuckey led the way for the Pistons, scoring 25 points on 8-16 shooting. He was the commander of the late charge that came up short. That dece player [sic] on the Cavs had 34 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

More thoughts after the jump
Ben Gordon sprained his ankle when it landed on Lebron James' foot near the end of the 2nd quarter. He returned after Pistons' timeout, but did not return in the 2nd half. It's up in the air what his status will be, but I can't imagine him not missing any games. Austin Daye started the second half at the two spot. Just what the Pistons needed was another injury to one of its best players. Luckily, Rip should be back soon. I'll keep you posted on Gordon.

Will Bynum turned in his worst performance of the season (arguably when they needed him to step up the most). His performance was very Ben Gordon vs. Dallas like in that he shot 1-13 from the field and was 2-4 at the line. He did have five assists, though.

Pistons outrebounded the Cavs 43-35, which I think is somewhat impressive given the Cavs had more opportunities for rebounds.

Charlie V had 19 points and eight rebounds. He also had two blocks and was 3-5 from downtown. All around acceptable.

Cavs only played eight players and five of them scored in double figures.

I watched most of the game while I was at a friend's last night. I caught most of the finish at a bar in Royal Oak, but re-watched the game today on NBA.com before my Thanksgiving feast. I apologize that this recap wasn't more timely.

Again, I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving and that their meals were delicious enough to wash out the bad taste the Lions and Pistons have left in our mouths.

Hobbled Pistons call on rookies
With Ben Gordon's status uncertain for tonight's home date with the Clippers, the focus turns again to the Pistons' rookies. That's nothing new since the focus has been on forwards Jonas Jerebko, Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers since the trio starred in summer league. But while the plan might have been to ease them into the NBA, that plan has gone out the window since Rip Hamilton (ankle sprain) and Tayshaun Prince (ruptured disk) have missed huge chunks of the season.

Jerebko is filling in for Prince, and with Gordon suffering a left ankle sprain in Wednesday night's loss to the Cavs, there's a chance that either Daye or Summers could get the starting nod at shooting guard against the Clippers. "It's tough to have a lot of your veterans go down, but the younger guys got to step up and make plays and hopefully be guided by our young core," Daye said Wednesday. The rash of injuries has accelerated the progress of the trio. All have had their moments, but a common theme among the group is that each is trying to play slower instead of being in a rush. "It's actually funny because the adjustment I had to make, because the game is faster, is slow myself down, because the game is so fast you don't want to get in the habit of rushing yourself," Summers said.

But the trio haven't looked overwhelmed and the organization is pleased with the progress. Everything will be OK, if they slow down and relax. "You got to know your looks and know when your looks are coming and be comfortable enough to knock down your shots and take your shots and just play comfortable," Summers said. "You can't play any game tense or tight, so just relax and it'll work out."

NOTEBOOK: Pistons coach John Kuester could decide on a backcourt of Will Bynum and Rodney Stuckey if Gordon is unable to go. That would mean action for little-used backup point guard Chucky Atkins.

The players were off Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving, and Stuckey said he was going over to Hamilton's place for dinner. Kuester said he would spend the holiday studying film of the Clippers.
