Now is the time: Get Chris Paul!

Post#1 » by Danimals » Thu Nov 26, 2009 6:28 pm

The Wolves are in a position of financial strenght due to Kahn and McHale's(hard to believe) moves these past two years.

We have many assets/options these next couple years: cap space to sign players outright, young talent at the 1 and 4 positions, multiple draft picks, talent stashed in Europe, and solid role players that should interest contenders.

What we don't have is a true superstar that can lead us to a championship. We are all hoping and praying to turn our assets(by luck, financial leverage, talent evaluation, or player development) into a true superstar.

I say the time is now: Get CHRIS PAUL! He is a young winner, the best pg in the leauge, a true superstar, and a future hall of famer. Best of all, he is rotting on his team, and they are powerless to get him help. We have the resources to get him. I say Kahn needs to get on the phone daily and make it happen.

Here are my ideas as to how:
#1
Big Al, Rubio, Sessions, Gomes, Pavlovic, Blount, Cardinal, Wilkins, and 1 first round pick for
Paul, Peja, Okafor, Mo Pete, Wright, and a 1 second round pick

This gives us Paul, plus leaves us enough assets to get another player on the wing(either by trade, draft, or 2011 FA)
The Hornets get huge cap relief and still have a fairly talented roster. They would have the assets to continue rebuilding quicky. They fans would hate to see Paul go but this package is a fair consolation prize.

#2(if NO needs more financial relief)
Rubio, Pekovic, Sessions, Gomes, Pavlovic, Blount, Cardinal, and Wilkins for
Paul, Peja, Posey, and Wright
Again, we get Paul and maintain some assets. We take on alot of bad salary.
The Hornets get more cap relief and slightly fewer assets. They could save even more by buying out some of their expiring contracts.

#3 is any other variation that gets up Paul and NO cap relief/assets.

Go get it done Kahn!

The Hornets would be dump to trade Paul. They won't.

They came of a terrible start of the season but will be a playoff team at the end of the season for sure.

none of your trades seem realistic at all. I wish we could acquire Paul but let's face it: we don't really have the assets to get him.

and for the record: unless you are trading the Charlotte, Utah pick or 2014 1st rounder, this deal wouldn't work anyway as we still own our 1st rounder to the Clippers.

I think we could make a trade happen if we really wanted to, but we really wouldn't have a lot of talent left on the team after the trade beside CP3.

okay I should have clarified that this goes without saying that I wouldn't want to gut the entire team to get Paul and some crappy contracts.

What, your not high on Posey or Peja?...I don't believe it. Anyway, if you check a lot of boards, they all think they can get CP3 for basically nothing. Kind of the they're losing anyway, so take expirings and one prospect.

Didn't have to search hard to find these CP3 trades.

When's the last time a 14-player trade went down? Never.

Keep it simple. An offer of Big Al, Rubio and Sessions would get it done but that's not a great trade IMO. Instead of an upgrade at point guard (no doubt Paul is a great player) the Wolves need a solid wingman, but should still preserve its chances of a top draft pick next year by keeping the team intact; that will be the quickest way for Minny to continue its rebuilding plan. If the Wolves got Paul now, they would be on the cusp of the playoffs, drafting around 14/15 and down a few assets. Either way there would be some cap room to work with also.

I like our 25% chance of getting John Wall more.

I will not be surprised if we see a Gasol-type trade pretty soon.

NOH simply can't afford their roster. It took sell-outs from a championship level team to help them barely break even last year. They don't have the assets to move those contracts, and swallowing them could create such financial losses to threaten the entire franchise. There just isn't the revenues available, and the question may be whether to keep Paul and the bad contracts and lose the franchise, or trade Paul to move the bad contracts, and start with a much cheaper, younger team that their revenues can afford.

It won't be tons of talent that wins Paul - it will be tons of financial relief.

We couldn't, Chris Paul won't be traded. And if we could, we should.

It will probably be both. Paul isn't going anywhere without some face-saving talent coming back.

I think the offseason would be much easier, then we can absorb contracts without them having to take anything back plus we can trade the 1st round pick then and if we're offering Flynn or Rubio, Flynn is going to be more established and viable as an asset with a full season under his belt and Rubio's status will be more known.

We could take back more salary if we do now since we have more expirings than we will cap space.

Paul's BYC makes things difficult, but no chance you see a two team 14 player trade. New Orleans will want to cut salary, but there's no chance they do it without some kind of young talent coming back.

Let me go farther out on a limb.

If NOH is offered the choice between getting a 1st, or having someone take Posey or MoPete, they'll choose the savings.

Look, Paul is awesome, but even with the guy, the Hornets know they were losing $20 mil a year with normal attendance. They are going to lose even more without him, and can't support their salary structure. They desperately need to cut costs - extra talent is something they can't afford.

They could get someone to take Posey and still throw in a ton of talent. I'd assume they could move Okafor and West for expirings, that's 20 million off of next year's payroll. If they still need to move Paul, a trade like Paul, Posey for Rubio, Love, and expirings would save them another 17 million off of next year's payroll, and the Wolves make that trade in a second.

Getting Paul requires that we trade Jefferson + (good young PG) + cap space and take back at least 2 of Peja, Posey, and Mo Peterson. It just does.

And because Paul is BYC, you have to add a ton of money to make it work no matter what. You can't just trade him straight up for someone. So the deal is take Posey, Mo Pete and Okafor along with CP3 and give them Blount, Sessions, Jefferson, Gomes and Cardinal and if we need to add more salary add more salary. If we don't, we eat the difference.

That's how you get CP3. You save them 50 million dollars and give them someone good enough back to sell to fans.

They took on an extra $40Mil in guaranteed salary for a minimal talent upgrade in the Chandler/Okafor trade.

Paul is a top 5 player in the league, and is only 24. Gasol was maybe a top 25 player and 27 years old. I don't think they're comparable at all, even if the salary situations are similar.
