Dunleavy's return to lineup nears
Mike Dunleavy compared his smooth-looking jump shot to riding a bike: You never lose it once you have it down.

The Indiana Pacers swingman is slowly getting those aspects of his game back, and with that said, Dunleavy could soon be making his long-awaited season debut. "I'm really close," Dunleavy said. "At this point I would say it's day-to-day."

The Pacers host the Dallas Mavericks tonight at Conseco Fieldhouse. Dunleavy is not expected to play.

Ray of hope
Tony Allen is getting closer to returning. Coach Doc Rivers flirted with putting Allen on the active roster Wednesday, but Allen is likely to make his season debut during the four-game road trip beginning Sunday in Miami. “I feel all right,’’ he said. “I need to get more explosive and get more lift as far as my shot. I just want to make sure it’s right.’’

Allen underwent right ankle surgery Aug. 3 and has practiced intermittently the past few weeks. He has only practiced consistently the past 10 days and doesn’t want to return prematurely. “I don’t feel there’s [a] need to rush it and [get] hurt and I would have to sit out another four games,’’ he said. “I don’t want to be off and on. I want to finish the whole season not worried.’’

Korver's return delayed
As Kyle Korver noted this week, he’s never been out as long in his NBA career as he has since undergoing knee surgery last month. Now in his seventh year, Korver never had missed more than eight games in a season before this one.

Although he’d hoped to return in the coming days, Korver will have to wait a little longer. He said Thursday that Cybex testing showed he still has strength to regain in his hamstring and quadriceps following surgery.

As a result, Korver will cease court work for a week and focus on rebuilding strength in his leg. Korver said he would need to test at 75 percent to be “borderline” to play; his quadriceps was 70 percent and his hamstring 56 percent. “It’s frustrating because I wanted to be back before then,” Korver said, adding that his muscles likely weakened when wasn’t able to practice in the preseason due to the swelling in his left knee.“It’s been a while since I had really gotten after it. I think that’s why it’s taking a little longer than I thought.”

james in in chicago:
you answer my question last week abount Dennis Rodman you said no hall of fame for him there no rule that says your bad behavior cant get you in the hall of fame its a bount what Dennis Rodman has done as a player and thats a lot

Chris Perkins:
Hey, James,
I agree with you that Rodman could get in based solely on talent. And, you're right on the behavior issue. I don't think there's any rule specifically addressing behavior. That's my personal thing. I think there should be a certain standard to associated with reaching the Hall of Fame. Maybe the voters disagree with me. We'll see. But for the tail end of his career Rodman's behavior was questionable, at best. I'm not sure the Hall of Fame wants to honor such antics. However, if you read my chats you'll know I'm not immune to being wrong.

Shaquille O'Neal will return tonight when Cleveland Cavaliers play at Charlotte
Shaquille O’Neal is expected to rejoin the Cavaliers starting lineup tonight when they face the Bobcats at 7:30

O’Neal went through shootaround here this morning without incident and Cavs coach Mike Brown said he intends to activate him for the game. O’Neal missed six games with a left shoulder strain, the Cavs going 5-1 in that span. Brown said he will not have O’Neal on a minute restriction and the plan is to play him on both ends of the back-to-back, including Saturday’s home game against Dallas.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas will return to the backup role.

Williams Out 8 Weeks, Brand Gametime Call
76ers point guard Lou Williams underwent surgery yesterday morning to have his jaw wired. Williams will miss eight weeks. Early in the first quarter of Tuesday night's loss to the Washington Wizards, Williams suffered the injury in a collision with Washington forward Antawn Jamison. In that game, he played 39 minutes and scored 26 points. "I was spitting out blood every time-out, but I thought it was my tooth, so I didn't think it was as serious as it was," said Williams, who is averaging 17.4 points and 5.1 assists per game. "I just continued to play, and there wasn't a lot of pain involved because I was playing on adrenaline, obviously. But I knew something was wrong, just not to this magnitude."

After a sleepless, painful night in Boston, Williams had an an X-ray taken that revealed the fracture. Brand update. With soreness and tightness in his right hamstring, Sixers power forward Elton Brand missed Wednesday's game against the Celtics.

Because of the injury, Brand also sat the final 16 minutes, 14 seconds of Tuesday night's loss to the Wizards. Jordan started Jason Smith at power forward against Boston. For tonight's game, Brand is still listed as a game-time decision.

Thunder Injuries Stack Up; Wilks Signed
With three guards sidelined by injuries, the Thunder will use James Harden, Thabo Sefolosha and possibly Kevin Durant as the backup point guard tonight.

Kyle Weaver, who filled the role Tuesday at Utah, suffered a separated shoulder in practice Wednesday and will be sidelined indefinitely. Kevin Ollie (knee) was encouraged by results from an MRI but was to meet with team officials before determining whether arthroscopic surgery is necessary. Shaun Livingston recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will be sidelined another two or three weeks. Power forward Nick Collison (knee) will miss his third consecutive game but could return soon once swelling subsides.

On Thursday, the Thunder signed free-agent point guard Mike Wilks.

Kirk Hinrich Sits with Injured Thumb
Amid a three-game slide, it was a bad sign for the Bulls that key reserve Kirk Hinrich was sitting on the training table before the game.

Hinrich sprained his left thumb in practice Wednesday and was in sandals, a white T-shirt and a spare pair of shorts. Coach Vinny Del Negro said Hinrich would not play against the Jazz and would be evaluated Friday in Chicago.

Dunleavy: 'I'm Really Close, Day-to-Day'
The toughest part for (Mike) Dunleavy, who has played in 18 games in the past 17 months, is getting into shape and working on his timing.

Some members of the Pacers organization have become quite eager for Dunleavy to return, especially with the uncertainty regarding Danny Granger's sprained left medial collateral ligament. "I anticipate he should not be out much longer and, I would say based on what Danny's situation is, I would suspect he needs to get back to the court," coach Jim O'Brien said.
