Getting to know Serge Ibaka.

Post#1 » by wiff » Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:45 pm

I've been waiting for this moment for a while now. I was hearing rumors about this kid since this team was still in Seattle. Hearing that this kid has drawn comparisons to Shawn Kemp. And oddly enough the Sonics drafted him. The Sonics last first round pick.

And although it is only preseason we are getting to see what he can do at the NBA level.

He looked good in Orlando, not so hot in Vegas. But so far in the preseason he is holding his own.

2 games 15min 8pts 5.5reb 1blk 1/2TO's

I'll take it.

But it's the game in New Orleans that was nice.

12pts with 9rebs and 2blks in 26min

I didn't watch the game, but 26min at PF you would think David West had to be on the floor at some point. West isn't a slouch.

Did anyone catch the commentary?

I really hope this kid can keep it up because it would be just what the Thunder can use.

Heck I'd take a Theo Ratliff, but I'd have no complaints to get KG.

I missed the commentry, but have heard good things from people who did hear it. They said it was like he was in everything for a while. And that he was exciting.

I'm still hoping he stays and Byron does to D-League.

The thing about a guy with Ibaka's skill set is that you don't want to rush him. He's athletic and has a nice shooting touch, but I'd want him to learn more about team defense, and the nuances about NBA offenses before giving him heavy rotation minutes. Let him learn behind guys like Nick Collison and Etan Thomas who know what they're doing, and when he's ready he can crack the rotation. Sort of like how the Bulls have brought Tyrus Thomas along.

Just like they used S Kemp coming off the bench .... then He exploded in Washington and the rest is history....

Thanks for the highlights man. :D
I love what Ibaka brings to the table, and to think he is extremely young in terms of basketball experience. I don't think he played organized ball until 16.

Here is a article on him from nba.com about his journey to the NBA.

Hey dream catcher Serge has been playing ball since he was about 5. Both his parents played on the
Congo national team. His little brother is supposed to be pretty good too.

His little bro IS good. He will be NBA-bound soon enough too...

Loving that Serge is beginning to crack the rotation already. I think OKC is going to be a great place for him to succeed

His lil brother Igor arrived to Spain last year, he's playing in the junior team of Manresa, the same team where Serge played in the ACB.
Here you can see a brief report about him and another african player (Johan Kody from Cameroon) who joined Manresa.

If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.
