Re: Dunleavy will play
As MDJ rounds into shape and Danny gets healthy, I think this team could get much better.
I agree with the poster in the other thread though--Hibbert has to play big minutes, and they need to run some plays for him. As much as I love Foster, he's the past--Big Roy is the present and future. He'll take his lumps, but he's going to get nothing but better as he plays more minutes.
Obie is getting a lot of criticism, but his problem is who plays where and how many minutes. It may sound odd for a team with a (currently) losing record, but Obie has a lot of guys worthy of getting extended minutes, more than most teams. With Dunleavy back, what happens to Dahntay? Watson and Head have both looked better at times in the backcourt than Ford. Where do you get minutes for a promising kid like Hansborough to play, with Murphy, when he's healthy and in his groove, giving double doubles at PF? We saw last year, and flashes this year, what Rush is capable of--he needs regular minutes too. I'm intrigued by the athleticism of both Solo and McBob--they aren't going to get any better getting splinters on the bench. What do you do with old stalwart Foster? It seems like the Pacers think Price is their PG of the future. He needs some minutes to develop as well.
This amounts to a situation both fraught with promise, but also problems. Only time will prove how it shakes out. As hard as it is to be patient, I think patience is exactly what is needed--this team isn't going to contend this year, and I think getting the team to mesh while building for the future is more important than wins at present, as long as the team is playing with energy and the kids are learning. Obie is right--those who produce should get the minutes. But to see who will produce--as well as developing the young guys--is going to create a period of confusion as to roles. It may take half the year or longer to settle into a good balance for the rotation. Once that happens, I think this team could be dangerous, one that none of the contenders will look forward to having to play.
