Utah Jazz: Kirilenko, Millsap hit training room with injuries
Paul Millsap just so happened to have a similar "uh, oh" moment at about the same time. The backup power forward left the game and gingerly limped to the locker room with a few minutes remaining in the first half after knocking knees with a Portland player.

Millsap, who finished with seven points in 13 minutes, said he felt "all right" after the game. An X-ray taken of the injured knee Saturday night came back negative, so it doesn't appear to have any long-term damage.

The valuable backup didn't want to think about "worst-case scenarios" after having missed three games — the first of his career — after spraining the PCL in his left knee last December.

Kirk Hinrich's left thumb injury could sideline him awhile
After four straight blowout losses but with a favorable December schedule following Monday night's game in Milwaukee, Kirk Hinrich's sprained left thumb is a perfect time to check if your Bulls glass is half full or half empty.

On the one hand, an MRI revealed the injured ligament remains attached to the bone, unlike last season when Hinrich tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb and missed 31 games after surgery.

On the other, Hinrich is visiting a specialist Monday, five full days after suffering the injury at a Wednesday practice in Oregon. Coach Vinny Del Negro wouldn't rule Hinrich out for Monday's game, but the fact he didn't practice Saturday and still has swelling doesn't bode well.

Atlanta Hawks (12-4) at Detroit Pistons (5-11), 1 p.m.
The banged-up Detroit Pistons hope to put the brakes on a seven-game losing streak when they close out a three-game homestand this afternoon versus the Atlanta Hawks at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Already without Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back), the Pistons lost Ben Gordon to an ankle injury and he's listed as doubtful versus the Hawks after missing Friday's 104-96 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Jonas Jerebko led Detroit with 22 points and Rodney Stuckey added 21 points and seven assists in a losing effort. "I was disappointed with this loss because we had a chance, and normally we've shown a lot of grit in the fourth period and we didn't show the same type of grit that we have in the past," said Pistons head coach John Kuester.

Austin Daye and Charlie Villanueva contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Pistons, who got 16 rebounds and five points from Ben Wallace. Detroit is 0-2 on the homestand and 3-4 at The Palace in 2009-10. Meanwhile, the Hawks got back into the win column with Friday's 100-86 victory at Philadelphia thanks to Jamal Crawford's 24 points and five assists. Mike Bibby added a season-high 21 points and five assists for the Hawks, who ended a two-game slide and won for the eighth time in 10 tries.

Josh Smith ended with 20 points, while Al Horford contributed 15 and eight rebounds for the victors. "This was a good game for us. I'm big on good teams bouncing back and we were able to do that tonight," said Hawks coach Mike Woodson. The Hawks are 5-3 away from Philips Arena this season and are off to their best start since opening the 1997-98 season at 13-2. Atlanta won all three meetings with the Pistons last season, but has lost eight of its last 10 trips to Detroit.

Redd sits out, says knee not right
Michael Redd knew he wasn't himself in the Bucks' 108-90 loss at Oklahoma City on Friday. So he told Bucks trainer Marc Boff that he needed more rest and recovery time as he returns from a left patella tendon strain suffered four weeks ago.

Redd will not play in the Bucks' home game Saturday night against Orlando. He scored eight points in 22 minutes on Friday, his third game since returning from the patella injury.

The veteran shooting guard did not experience the same problems in the preseason, when he was returning from anterior cruciate ligament surgery in March. But he has not been able to shake the effects of the latest injury. "When you play in game motion, you really find out if you're ready or not," Redd said in the Bucks locker room before Saturday's game. "Explosion is not there yet, and it's obvious. Just not finishing, not getting above the rim. "I noticed it last night and I was able to tell the trainers, 'We need to get this right before I get back.' We're going to work towards it. Let's get it stronger and get it right."

Pistons to change starting lineup
Pistons to change starting lineup
Expect some changes in the Pistons starting lineup today when they host the Atlanta Hawks. Pistons coach John Kuester was vague about the changes, but said there will be some. “We are going to hold off on talking about our lineup, but we’re going to make some changes,” Kuester said. “There is some changes. We’ll hold off until a little bit later because we’re just making sure.”

Ben Gordon (ankle), Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) remain out of the lineup. Austin Daye started in place of Gordon against the Clippers on Friday so it could be a case where the matchup against Atlanta won’t allow Detroit to start Daye. Starting Will Bynum at point guard and moving Rodney Stuckey to shooting guard would allow Detroit to have Bynum defend Atlanta’s Mike Bibby and Stuckey defend Joe Johnson.

The changes could also be in the frontcourt where Charlie Villanueva has struggled as of late, while Jason Maxiell has played well of the bench. It’s unclear what the changes are at this point, but Kuester feels adjustments need to be made with the team on a seven-game losing streak. “We been on a streak that we’re not comfortable with,” Kuester said. “Let me you tell you this our lineup changes don’t really reflect the person or persons that are taken out of the lineup. We just have to make some adjustments. It’s not their fault is what I’m saying. You’ve go to go through and make some adjustments and stuff like that. The whole idea is trying to continually get better. That’s the whole purpose.”

Pistons shake up lineup; Atkins gets start
When the Pistons signed Chucky Atkins to a non-guaranteed contract just before the start of training camp there probably wasn’t one person thought he would be anywhere near the starting lineup.

But when team’s are going through seven-game losing streaks, plans go out the window and Pistons coach John Kuester shook up the lineup before today’s game against the Hawks by inserting Atkins at point guard and Jason Maxiell at power forward into the starting lineup. They join Jonas Jerebko at small forward, Ben Wallace at center and Rodney Stuckey at shooting guard.Ben Gordon will miss his second game in a row because of a sprained left ankle, but it’s not that surprising that rookie Austin Daye, who got the start in place of Gordon on Friday night, will return to the bench. But it is kind of surprising that power forward Charlie Villanueva, who has started the first 15 games, goes to the bench.

But it is kind of surprising that power forward Charlie Villanueva, who has started the first 15 games, goes to the bench. But the moves appear to be geared toward giving the Pistons a boost with energetic players like Jerebko, Maxiell and Wallace. But Kuester said don’t look at it as a demotion of Villanueva. He’s just trying something to stop a losing streak. “We’ve been on a streak that we’re not comfortable with,” Kuester said.” Let me tell you this: Our lineup changes really don’t reflect the person or persons that are taken out of the lineup. “We’ve just got to make some adjustments. It’s not their fault, is what I’m saying.”

Senator pressures NBA to stop Adidas jersey plan
A U.S. senator from New York doesn't want NBA players taking to the court wearing jerseys made in Asia. "Basketball is an American game," Sen. Charles Schumer said.

Schumer planned to publicly urge the leadership of the NBA on Sunday to intervene and stop Adidas from moving production of the league's official uniforms to Thailand, or pull out of its contract with the sports apparel giant.

Schumer said not only is "an all-American product" at stake, but also about 100 jobs at American Classic Outfitters' factory in upstate New York, where more than half the uniforms worn by Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and other NBA players are manufactured.

The Hawks on an early Sunday afternoon is not the team Detroit wants to be staring at in the thick of a seven game losing streak. Unfortunately, the up and coming, 12-4 Hawks, are exactly who the Pistons have to face at 1 PM EST on Sunday. The Pistons will be facing a lineup that has been together for a few years now, and are just starting to reap the benefits of that, with a completely different lineup themselves. According to Coach John Kuester: "We’ve been on a streak that we’re not comfortable with … you’ve got to make some adjustments."That lineup, according to the Detroit News, is as I've put it above. That means, as you can tell, Charlie Villanueva will be coming off the bench for the first time this season.

For the Pistons it's really not a question of effort, as it's clearly there, but more of an issue of how to get this team to click as a unit. It seems that one or two quarters they completely fall flat on their faces and that serves as the back breaker for them. They need to somehow find a lineup and rotation that is able to click for 48 minutes. And that's extra hard to do when they are continuously without two or three of their normal starting pieces. Richard Hamilton will be out again today and hasn't played since the opener. Tayshaun Prince hasn't played since the first few games and Ben Gordon will miss his second consecutive game with an injured ankle. While this is giving added experience for the young guys, we're not seeing the Pistons lineup that many of us thought would surprise critics this season. Until we see that, any pre-season predictions or expectations go right out the window and we can only hope we see continued improvement from some of the lesser experienced players on this team. Ultimately, and ideally, this team will start to gel and pick up wins when it matters most. Hopefully, not when it's too late. Tip off is at 1 PM EST. No Lions today, not that that'd change your plans, but you should be able to direct all your attention to the Pistons pulling off a nice, surprising win against a quality Hawks team today.

Pistons shuffle lineup for game against Hawks
There will be lineup changes this afternoon when the Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks. Coach John Kuester hinted of some possible changes when talking with the media Sunday before the Pistons played Atlanta.

Chucky Atkins will replace Austin Daye at one of the guard spots, while Jason Maxiell will replace Charlie Villanueva at one of the forward positions. Atkins, Rodney Stuckey, Maxiell, Jonas Jerebko and Ben Wallace will comprise the starting lineup.

The Pistons (5-11) have lost seven consecutive games. They will be without Ben Gordon (sprained left ankle), Rip Hamilton (severely sprained right ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (small ruptured disc).

Shaking things up
It appears this will be the starting lineup this afternoon against Atlanta - Chucky Atkins and Rodney Stuckey in the backcourt, with Jason Maxiell, Jonas Jerebko and Ben Wallace in the frontcourt. So that means Austin Daye and Charlie Villanueva will obviously begin the game on the bench, for Atkins and Maxiell, respectively. Having lost seven consecutive games, coach John Kuester obviously wants to shake things up.

Lineup changes could lead to starts for Jason Maxiell, Chucky Atkins
The Detroit Pistons will shake up the starting lineup today when they take on the Atlanta Hawks. But it’s not clear who is coming out and who is going in. “We’re going to hold off on talking about our lineup,” Pistons coach John Kuester said this morning, “but we’re going to make some changes.”

Ben Gordon is listed as doubtful for the game, and it doesn’t appear the lineup change involves Gordon, Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton. “Right now, all three of them will not play,” he said. Kuester spoke highly of the play of Jason Maxiell after practice Saturday, and he is likely to start in place of Charlie Villanueva. Austin Daye started Friday at shooting guard and likely will be replaced as a starter by Chucky Atkins.

That would mean the Pistons would start Rodney Stuckey and Atkins at guard; Jonas Jerebko and Maxiell at forward; and Ben Wallace at center. The Pistons have lost seven consecutive games since starting the season 5-4. “We’ve been on a streak that we’re not comfortable with,” Kuester said. “Let me tell you this: Our lineup changes really don’t reflect the person or persons that are taken out of the lineup. We’ve just got to make some adjustments. “It’s not their fault, is what I’m saying.”

Follow along as the Detroit Pistons host the Hawks in a Sunday matinée at the Palace. The Pistons have lost seven straight and take on Atlanta (12-4), the team tied for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Ben Gordon (ankle), Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince will once again miss the game.

To shake things up, the Pistons have started guard Chucky Atkins and forward Jason Maxiell. Charlie Villanueva will come off the bench.

Pistons shake up lineup, stun Hawks at home
A surprising lineup change led to a shocking victory for the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons inserted guard Chucky Atkins and forward Jason Maxiell into the starting lineup Sunday and beat the Atlanta Hawks 94-88. The win was the sixth of the year for the Pistons (6-11) and ended a seven-game losing streak. It was just the fifth loss of the season for Atlanta (12-5). Pistons coach John Kuester said prior to the game that there would be changes but was not specific on which players would be involved. “We’ve been on a streak that we’re not comfortable with,” Kuester said. “Let me tell you this: Our lineup changes really don’t reflect the person or persons that are taken out of the lineup. We’ve just got to make some adjustments. “It’s not their fault, is what I’m saying.”

Maxiell replaced Charlie Villanueva in the starting lineup, while Atkins started in place fo Austin Daye, who started Friday night after Ben Gordon suffered an ankle injury in Wednesday’s game. The move allowed the Pistons to bring two players with scoring punch -- Will Bynum and Villanueva -- off the bench. It was the first start of the season for both Atkins and Maxiell, and Atkins had appeared in just four games prior to Sunday’s. Kuester likes players that provide energy, and the revamped lineup certainly came through in that area. The Pistons got off to a good start and led for most of the game. Detroit outrebounded the Hawks 53-27 and had almost as many offensive rebounds -- 24 as the Hawks had total rebounds. Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 23 points and eight assists, while Bynum added 19 points and four assists. Villanueva added 13 points.

Ben Wallace had 18 rebounds -- 11 on the offensive end -- to go with 10 points.Detroit held a 29-11 rebounding advantage in the first half and led 55-47 at the break.Villanueva went down hard with 9:30 left in the game. After being fouled while driving the lane, Villanueva stumbled and his face crashed into Ben Wallace’s hip, and blood gushed from both nostrils and the bridge of his nose. After a timeout, Villanueva re-entered the game to shoot free throws, but he was still bleeding heavily. He ended up shooting -- and making -- both free throws with a wad of gauze sticking out of a nostril before going to the locker room. He did not return.

Pistons snap 7-game skid with win over Hawks
Rodney Stuckey scored 23 points as the Detroit Pistons snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 94-88 win over the Hawks today at the Palace. Will Bynum added 19 points and Charlie Villanueva scored 13 before leaving the game with a bloody nose. Ben Wallace had 10 points, 18 rebounds (11 offensive) and two steals. Jonas Jerebko finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. “Ben was phenomenal again today,” Detroit coach John Kuester said. “It’s amazing the level that he is still grabbing rebounds.” A Jamal Crawford jumper with less than a minute gone by in the fourth quarter tied the game at 67 after the Pistons led by as many as 12 in the third. But Will Bynum's layup and Charlie Villanueva's hook shot gave the Pistons a four-point lead. After a Hawks' miss, Villanueva drove to the basket and was fouled, but on the way down, Villanueva's nose crashed into Ben Wallace's hip. He was on the floor for a few minutes before leaving with a bloody nose. After packing his nose to stop the bleeding, Villanueva hit two free throws and was escorted to the locker room by trainer Mike Abdenour. After the game, Villanueva was diagnosed with a broken nose. He will have his nose set Monday. Is availability for Wednesday's game at Chicago is unknown.

After the free throws, a Bynum layup and Jason Maxiell hook shot capped a 10-0 Pistons run and take a 77-67 lead. “Boy, Jonas has been a pleasant surprise for us this year, and Max did a great job for us today,” Kuester said. “Charlie provides a lot of offense, and we thought he could give us a spark off the bench.” Atlanta cut the lead to two on a Mike Bibby three-pointer with about 25 seconds to play. But Bynum's two free throws extended the cushion. “We know we can beat any team — it is up to us to come out and do the things that give us a chance to be in the game at the end,” Bynum said. “We’ve been struggling to close games out, but today we did a good job with that.”

John Kuester juggled his starting lineup, going with Chucky Atkins and Jason Maxiell and bringing Charlie Villanueva and Austin Daye off the bench. “We talk about the leadership that we get from Ben, Tayshaun and Rip, but we need to add Chucky to that discussion,” Kuester said. “He’s been huge for our young guards. He’s going to be a coach in this league, and he’s doing a lot of that for us.” Atkins hadn’t started an NBA game since 2007, and hadn’t started for Detroit since Nov. 30, 2002. Josh Smith led six Hawks in double-figures with 23 points. Crawford (Michigan) had 20. Bibby scored 13 and Joe Johnson had 10. Al Horford had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Pistons led at halftime, 55-47. Detroit outrebounded Atlanta, 53-27. “When you get beat like that on the boards, you aren’t going to beat many teams in this league,” Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. “We just didn’t compete today. We’ve been a team that has always been full of effort, and today we got outworked and I’m embarrassed.”

Wallace leads Pistons past Hawks 94-88
The Detroit Pistons have been one of the league's better offensive-rebounding teams this season. Sunday, they took it to another level. Detroit had 24 offensive rebounds, including 11 from Ben Wallace, as they ended a seven-game losing streak with a 94-88 win over the Atlanta Hawks. "Ben was phenomenal again today," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "It's amazing the level that he is still grabbing rebounds." Wallace finished with 18 total rebounds and 10 points, while rookie Jonas Jerebko added 11 rebounds and 10 points. Jason Maxiell, moved into the starting lineup in place of Charlie Villanueva, had another four offensive rebounds. The Pistons had a 30-10 advantage on second-chance points. "Boy, Jonas has been a pleasant surprise for us this year, and Max did a great job for us today," Kuester said. "Charlie provides a lot of offense, and we thought he could give us a spark off the bench." Kuester has done a lot of lineup juggling this season, and faced another game Sunday without starters Richard Hamilton (ankle), Tayshaun Prince (back) and Ben Gordon (ankle). Along with moving Maxiell off the bench, he put veteran point-guard Chucky Atkins in for rookie Austin Daye. That move paid off, too, as Atkins' presence took pressure off slumping Rodney Stuckey. Playing more shooting guard, Stuckey had 23 points and eight assists. "We talk about the leadership that we get from Ben, Tayshaun and Rip, but we need to add Chucky to that discussion," Kuester said. "He's been huge for our young guards. He's going to be a coach in this league, and he's doing a lot of that for us."

Will Bynum added 19 points off the bench. "We know we can beat any team - it is up to us to come out and do the things that give us a chance to be in the game at the end," he said. "We've been struggling to close games out, but today we did a good job with that." Josh Smith led Atlanta with 21, but the Hawks couldn't overcome Detroit's 53-27 rebounding advantage. "When you get beat like that on the boards, you aren't going to beat many teams in this league," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "We just didn't compete today. We've been a team that has always been full of effort, and today we got outworked and I'm embarrassed." With Wallace, Jerebko and Maxiell attacking the offensive glass, Detroit had 17 second-choice points on their way to a 55-47 halftime lead. Detroit expanded the margin to as many as 11 in the third, but Atlanta was within two, 67-65, at quarter's end. The Hawks scored the first basket of the fourth, but the Pistons responded with an 10-0 run to go up 77-67 with 7:45 left. Atlanta narrowed the gap to 89-85 with 30 seconds to play, and after Maxiell made one of two free throws, Mike Bibby made it a two-point game with a long 3-pointer. Detroit, though, clinched the game from the line. "Ben Wallace just outworked us today," Smith said. "It was a lack of effort on our part. We have to know that Ben is going to do that. It's kind of discouraging, because we had all our guys, and we knew how many key guys they had out, and we were not able to get the win."

NOTES: Atkins hadn't started an NBA game since 2007, and hadn't started for Detroit since Nov. 30, 2002. ... Villanueva was hit in the face while being fouled with 9:30 to play, breaking his nose. He shot the free throws with a large wad of gauze stemming the blood flow, but then went to the locker room and did not return. The Pistons expect to have an update on his playing status Monday.

New lineup helps Pistons beat Hawks
This typified the way things had been going for the Pistons and first-year coach John Kuester. Coming into his post-game news conference Sunday, Kuester went onto the podium only to realize his customary chair wasn't there. Kuester cracked a smile and joke about how that's what happens when you're in a seven-game losing streak. Anyway, a chair was quickly found and Kuester started his interview session after a much-needed 94-88 victory over the talented Atlanta Hawks. Problem with the chair, fixed. Problem with the team, fixed, he hopes. "It is frustrating, don't kid yourselves," said Kuester of the losing streak. "The guys are working so hard, you want to see some type of reward at the end. It's healthy for them to get a win today especially against a quality team like Atlanta. "We held everybody accountable in practice, in the games, and the guys responded." To that end, Kuester initiated the reward by tweaking the starting lineup. The changes worked.Looking to instill a bit more defense and energy at the start of the game, Kuester sat Charlie Villanueva and Austin Daye and started Chucky Atkins and Jason Maxiell.

The moves worked. Maxiell had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 29 minutes, while playing robust defense. Atkins 2 points in 19 minutes but settled down and ran the offense and his influence was apparent.Villanueva had 13 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes before breaking his nose in the third quarter, after colliding with Ben Wallace's hip. Villanueva is to be reevaluated Monday, but isn't likely to miss any games. There was no pouting from Villanueva about going to the bench. "I'm proud of the way Charlie responded. He's a total team player. Whatever it takes to win," Kuester said. "He's been that way from day one. Maxiell came in and did a great job on the boards, contesting all their shots. "We made the changes because sometimes when you go through a stretch like that, you have to make adjustments -- just to make a change itself. "It was a healthy change for us."

One added bonus from the changes: the Pistons out-rebounded Atlanta a staggering 53-27. The 53 rebounds were a season-high. By starting Atkins, Rodney Stuckey was freed from running the offense and responded with 23 points (he still led the team with 8 assists), while looking a bit more liberated. "It really doesn't change," said Stuckey of his role playing off the ball instead of handling it. "If I don't have the ball, I'll get it at some point (in the offense). Chucky came in and led us, got us into position. I can rest a little bit (playing off the ball). I'm just out there being aggressive." A post-game locker room that was becoming deflated suddenly regained a little pep. Each time the Hawks rallied Sunday, it was the Pistons, for a change, who responded and regained control. It made for a nice afternoon for Kuester. "Our guys came in and were focused, understood that we'd been in a tough (injury) situation but we didn't lose focus in what we wanted to get accomplished," Kuester said. "Good win."
