Trader Joe: Some Possible Moves Joe Dumars Should Be Considering
Not only are you dealing with the first season in recent memory in which the playoffs seem like a difficult endeavor, but you are watching an entirely different team take the court this season. In fact, due to injury, you are seeing a different team every night! The season is still in its early stages and injuries have robbed this team of a clear way of judging the effectiveness of the roster. However, teams are always measured by wins and losses and unless NBA commissioner David Stern steps in and gives the league a mulligan, this team is going to have to play with the hand they were dealt.

What We Know
As presently constructed, this team can not compete for a title. You may be saying "thanks for the update, captain obvious! Any chance the Lions miss the playoffs too?", however, this is an important realization. Namely, because it means Pistons president Joe Dumars likely sees this too. As we have seen in the past, Dumars is not shy about making big splashes, and there is no reason to think that has changed. Also, the Pistons are not drawing as many fans as last year. While the economy of Michigan (especially Detroit) is a factor, that has never stopped Dumars before from bringing in fans.Add to that the fact that Dumars' new boss, the late William Davidson's family, is probably not making the profits they are used to, and you have a recipe for action. Perhaps I am wrong and they are a patient bunch. However, it seems like any new boss is looking to make their mark, and it never feels good to be at the helm when the ship starts taking in water. We also know that this Pistons team has holes in it. Rodney Stuckey is trying hard to become the point guard that Dumars needs him to be, but with varying levels of success. The fact is that this team is second to last in the league in assists, and that is a direct reflection of the team's point guard play. So why does Stuckey need to be this team's point guard? In all honesty, he doesn't, but it would be easiest if he was the "one". More on this in a second. The front court also has holes in it, although the Ben Wallace renaissance has helped mask this fact. Power forward Charlie Villanueva has been just about what most people expected, a scorer with limited skill at defense and on the boards (however, he has shown a willingness to at least try to defend, which has been a pleasant surprise for yours truly). But behind these two, the front court is woefully weak. Kwame Brown is, well, Kwame Brown. He is big and he can rebound and defend a little, so he is worth keeping around, but he is not the center of the future for this team. Chris Wilcox has been a bust so far, which is probably what most people expected. That leaves Jason Maxiell who has been, to be generous, rather inconsistent over the course of his tenure in Detroit and is likely on the trading block. We also know that this team has a huge logjam on the wings. This has been less obvious lately with all the injuries, but I am sure this is on Dumars' mind quite often. Currently, this Pistons team has essentially seven guys competing for minutes at two positions that should be, at most, five players deep. Also, the three most expensive salaries on the team, by far, are among those seven, and this is also a factor. More on that as well.

A Bright Side?
The good news is that this team is not barren of talent. If you look around the league, you will see some situations that are far more dire than Detroit's. The New York Knicks have a worse record, less talent and some terrible salaries on hand that essentially tie the hands of their general manager, Donnie Walsh. The New Jersey Nets have yet to win a game, yet they have some likewise terrible contracts (anybody want Bobby Simmons at $11 million per season?). New Orleans may have a stud in Chris Paul, but the Hornets have to slash salaries and they are faced with the prospect of having to trade their once untouchable star. Detroit has no such toxic salaries. The three most expensive players, Ben Gordon, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, are all still in their prime and still reasonably priced in the $10 to $11.5 million a year range. This team is also very young. Aside from Wallace and Chucky Atkins (who each make the veteran's minimum), only Hamilton is over 30. Given Rip's reputation for physical fitness, most people would agree that he should be able to play well into his late 30's (ala former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller). This gives Dumars what every general manager craves ... flexibility.

Charlie Villanueva will have surgery on broken nose
Charlie Villanueva will need to have surgery to set the broken nose he sustained in the Detroit Pistons' 94-88 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.

Villanueva reported he will have surgery Monday via his Twitter account. Villanueva suffered the injury in the fourth quarter. While driving to the basket, he was fouled by Zaza Pachulia. The foul caused Villanueva to tumble to the ground where he collided face-first with Ben Wallace's hip. Villanueva remained on the floor as blood poured out of his nose. Detroit was forced to call a timeout as team trainer Mike Abdenour worked to stop the bleeding so Villanueva could attempt his free throws

An NBA rule prevents a player to return to the game if he is physically incapable of shooting his free throws. Villanueva was able to shoot his free throws with a large wad of tissues jammed in his nose and he proceeded to make both attempts. He immediately left the game and was unable to return because of the injury.

Charlie Villanueva Shoots Free Throws With Maxi Pad in His Nostril
What happens when your face slams into a body made of steel? It bleeds profusely. Charlie Villanueva drove the lane and was fouled by Hawks, Zach Pachulia, causing CV to come crashing down into the hip of the physical specimen, Ben Wallace. CV31 immediately crumpled to the floor holding his nose and gushing blood. Trainer, Mike Abdenour, brought out a huge Pistons gatorade towel that was completely covered in red by the time Villanueva got to his feet and walked to the Pistons bench.

After the timeout, a dazed Villanueva came onto the floor with a huge wad of gauze shoved into his left nostril and knocked down two free throws like it ain't no thang. He immediately was replaced by Jason Maxiell and went to the locker room for further reparations to his schnoz. It looked like his nose was puffy, he had a cut on the bridge, and his eye was swollen. I'd be surprised if his nose wasn't broken, resulting in yet another Pistons player possibly missing time. When CV31 does come back, we could see him in a Rip-like face mask becoming the first NBA player with alopecia to wear a mask. Hawks tried to make it interesting despite the Pistons having a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter. In the end, Detroit walked away with a six point victory. Charlie Villanueva had 13 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.

UPDATE: Charlie's nose is indeed broken. It will be set on Monday and his availability for Wednesday's game in Chicago will be evalutated then.

Pistons Do It With Rebounding And Defense Against ATL
The formula for the Detroit Pistons, if they want to even sniff the .500 mark, is to consistently play the kind of tenacious defense they played against the Hawks today. The defensive effort was fantastic in almost every aspect. Only one block the entire game, but Ben altered a bunch of shots today and the other guys made sure to body up the Hawks players and get a hand in their faces. I don’t know if the Jason Maxiell insertion helped set the tone more so than usual or what, but I liked what I saw.

Ben Wallace looks like Ben Wallace of old. His 11 offensive rebound effort today was a joy to watch. Heck, he had his hands on the rock so much today I would have guessed he had 20 offensive boards. Yeah I know I’m not the first to say Ben Wallace is doin mad work, and certainly won’t be the last, but his presence is probably a huge reason this team has even cracked the two or three win total so far this season. His example may not have fully rubbed off on Villanueva just yet but it’s slowly seeping into the habits of this young, talented team. Jerebko continues to surprise me with his basketball IQ and just his pure grit. The kid has actual skills too, which makes him an intriguing guy down the road. The bar is high for this kid. No doubt the bar is high for Austin Daye as well, but right now his strength is not NBA caliber. Summers will stick in this league for a long time because he can shoot. I just wish all three of these guys didn’t essentially play the same position… but that’s a topic for another day, probably a day far off because, well, we’re lucky to get anything of real substance up on LoD but once a week or so, mostly from Steve Kays.

Just wanted to mention how nice it looks to have guys like Chris Wilcox and Chucky Atkins always showing their support for the guys on the court. Both of these guys could easily pout about their lack of floor time, especially considering this team is struggling, but both are in it for the team and I think it’s partly indicative of the job John Kuester has done molding this collective of guys into a team. Obviously both Chuckster and Wilcox are high character guys and it’s not a surprise both have been great team members, but it speaks volumes what both have done so far because even the most well intentioned teammate slip up once in awhile over frustrating things such as lack of playing time/role etc. I know I often make silly comments about the Pistons woes on Twitter (@ lifeondumars), and that won’t change, but I vividly remember the days when Grant Hill played in Detroit and had little to no help out there–there was really no light at the end of the tunnel is what I’m saying. Now I see light at the end of the tunnel and even though this season looks like it could be the worst in a long time, I realy enjoy watching this group compete on a nightly basis. I’m stealing this slogan from Lowes, but it fits with this team pretty well, “We’re building something special here”. Emphasis on “building”. And I’m confident it will be special when completed.

Nets fire Frank after 0-16 start
The New Jersey Nets have fired Lawrence Frank, the coach told Yahoo! Sports.

Frank will not coach against the Lakers on Sunday night, when the Nets will have a chance to tie an NBA record with a 17th straight loss to start the season. New Jersey assistant Tom Barrise will coach Sunday instead.

Nets president Rod Thorn will spend Monday in meetings with staff about a choice for a longer-term interim coach, sources said. Thorn will choose among three Nets assistants – most notably Barrise and John Loyer – and GM Kiki Vandeweghe. Sources believe that if Vandeweghe wants the job, it will be his.

Charlie Villanueva suffers broken nose during win
You can't blame Pistons fans if they start wondering what's next. You can add power forward Charlie Villanueva to the list of injured Pistons after today's 94-88 home victory over the Hawks to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Villanueva suffered a broken nose with 9:30 left when he was fouled by the Hawks' Zaza Pachulia on a drive to the basket. As he was falling his face appeared to hit near the hip of teammate Ben Wallace. His nose started bleeding profusely and a time-out was taken. Pistons personnel was able to slow the bleeding just enough so Villanueva could make the two free throws. He then went to the locker room and never returned.

He will have his nose set on Monday and the Pistons will have more on his availability for Wednesday night's game at Chicago then. The Pistons' injury list includes Rip Hamilton (right ankle sprain), Tayshaun Prince (ruptured disk) and Ben Gordon (left ankle sprain).

Nets fire coach Lawrence Frank after 0-16 start
The New Jersey Nets fired coach Lawrence Frank on Sunday after losing their first 16 games during one of the worst starts in NBA history.

Assistant Tom Barrise will coach the team Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers, when the Nets could tie the record for the worst start if they lose.

Frank was in his sixth full season, the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference and the winningest coach in the Nets' NBA history. But none of those victories came this season, and the team dismissed him with a 225-241 record. "Lawrence always approached every day with a passion for his craft that was infectious, and his dedication to the game as well as his work ethic are to be both admired and appreciated," Nets president Rod Thorn said in a statement. "I wish he and his family only the best of good fortune in the future."
