Who should the Jazz draft?
Mods, feel free to merge this thread with the NY thread if you feel it should be done. I know it's really early, but since half of what we do here is get ahead of ourselves, I thought I'd ask. Since I'm in Brazil, I don't get to watch any college basketball, except for maybe a few games in march. Who do you guys think the Jazz should draft if they don't land the #1 pick, as it seems we're likely gonna be getting a top 7 pick in the worst case.
The consensus seems to be that Wall will go number one no matter who's drafting. What options do we have with him off the board? Favors seems like a great prospect and we could use a big man with Boozer likely leaving. Turner has been putting up insane numbers. Johnson also seems like a good prospect. We could use a guy like Aldrich, but it seems to me like he'll be just a good role player. So, what are your thoughts? BTW, if KOC drafts the kid from Lithuania, I'm gonna murder him.

Don't we sort of need to know where the pick will be first?

Never too early!
I'm hoping we luck into #1 pick, and parlay it into multiple top 10s. Strong draft. Pick up Turner and Davis or Aldrich maybe....
Turner:
PPG APG 3P% RPG BPG SPG
19.8 6.7 .200 12.8 1.3 1.7
Aldrich:
PPG APG 3P% RPG BPG SPG
10.8 1.2 .000 8.6 3.8 0.6
Davis:
PPG APG 3P% RPG BPG SPG
12.7 1.4 .000 9.9 2.6 0.4

What team will have multiple top 10 picks? It's not really likely a draft day triple team deal is reached.

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
Are two guys picked in the 4-10 range better than one guy picked first overall?
You could probably cherry-pick a few examples where that's true, but if you took the average of all of the possible combos my guess is the #1 overall pick will be the better option.

Favours would be the best option for us. "That kid from Lithuania" as in Motejunas is going to be a great player too in a few years - he really has the talent...
As long as it's not Aldrich or Ed Davis I'll be happy

I'd love to have him if he turned out to be Gasol type of player, not another Memo or Bargnani, who he's often compared to. I highly doubt he'll ever be as good as Dirk. I just think there are less risky options, which might be just as or even more rewarding. I'm really scared he'll turn out another Darko or Skita.

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
From Draft Express' scouting report earlier this month:
Wow. Sign me up. Sounds like just what the Jazz need.
Perhaps the place where Motiejunas is struggling the most right now is on the glass, having grabbed just four defensive rebounds in 82 minutes of action through five Italian league games. It’s not hard to come away with the feeling at times that Motiejunas lacks quite a bit of toughness watching him being boxed out with ease while casually going after loose balls with one hand, and this will be a significant concern for NBA decision makers moving forward if he can’t find a way to pick up his play here. He looks very indifferent setting screens and stepping in to take charges, avoiding contact and not really being in a huge rush to sacrifice his body for the sake of the team.

Give him some time. There are question marks - yes, but again - he really really is one talented kid. You have to factor in that he's going through some serious adjustments right now - new team, stronger league, different country and language, being a bench guy instead of a go to guy, etc.
If he works through it and comes out stronger (in the 2-nd half of the season) then he can adjust to the NBA just as well. If however he continues to struggle, well... he'll fall out of the lottery at the very least and will be a way bigger risk draft for whoever takes him.
And don't trust draftexpress blindly - while they indeed are the best drafting source out there they've made their fair share of mistakes. Especially in regards to Euro prospects

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
Yeah, anyone who actually watched Dirk in his rookie year can attest to a player being capable of looking like complete dog **** one and figuring it out suddenly to become a stud. Dirk was one of the worst NBA players I've ever watched in his 1st season, he was that bad. So the above is no indictment of his future potential, if taken in the context of his overall body of work, which is very, very good from everything I've read, heard and seen.
Still, he's a project no matter how you slice it, and the track record of top foreign prospects is dicey at best. Give me the safer pick every time, as long as the upside is within a reasonable gap.

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
Favors is the top guy on my list. Even though I love what Wall brings, and he'd be an absolute stud with Deron in the back court, Favors answers so many of our questions it'd be really hard to pass him up.
He's a freak athlete, he's a dangerous scorer (shooting 72.2% in his first 5 games as a college player) he's a low post defender, he's a shot blocker, and he replaces Boozer as a go to PF if we don't resign Boozer this offseason. he can rebound the ball, and he has legit size at 6'9.
Then Turner/Aldrich at right about the same place.
Turner is a do it all guy, not exactly like Brandon Roy, but a player who does a lot of things well and makes your team better. Seems like a good off the ball wing is the key to a championship in todays game so he could really step into that role nicely.
Aldrich is a big time defender down low, has a decent offensive game, and seems like a good kid from all reports. If he shows more offensive game as the season progresses he could really be a stud in the mold of Brook Lopez, but I don't think he'll ever be that kind of scorer.

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
I say you take Wall and don't blink. If the team 2 or 3 wants wall bad enough they will pay with Favors and another good piece then we talk.
This is based on now of course, the college season is yet to transpire.

Here are the best highlight tapes of the top 5 on my list if you are interested in checking some of these guys out.
Favors - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Od-U5IF4s
(Great athlete, Dwight Howard like potential)
Wall - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkUxpa9CyaI
(Insanely talented, could be Dwyane Wade 2.0)
Tuner - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abhi0ZdO0uE
(Boring player to watch, but very good)
Aldrich - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4trsJcFNkw
(Good back to the basket game, solid athlete)
Johnson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESU5uohxvm4

Re: Who should the Jazz draft?
1. Wall
2. Favors
3. Evan Turner
Those 3 are the clear best players at this point in this year's draft, with somewhat of a huge drop off in terms of talent after them. If we don't get any of those guys, I wouldn't mind taking a potential guy like Xavier Henry or DeMarcus Cousins, who should both progress up draft boards during the year. Wesley Johnson, Ed Davis, James Anderson, and Greg Monroe are a few more proven guys that deserve consideration, but I don't see their ceilings as high as the other 5 I named.

If we need a player to dunk over high school kids then looks like either John Wall or Favors would be a great fit.
