Should the Hawks resign Joe?
should they? Joe has had 3 really bad games. does Joe deserve max? Joe is no Wade, or Lebron or Paul, so should the Hawks really over pay Joe with a max contract? should the Hawks just try to go for another high end free agent this summer?

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
They need someone that will play team basketball and Joe palys for himself. From what I know were not gonna be able to afford a star player that is needed here. I would not overpay him, he isnt worth it. All pro caliber SG but doesnt play team ball. Thoughts will change throughout the year based on his performance and overall team success.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

thinking about it, if the Hawks could get a guy like Rip Hamilton and have a rotation of Crawford/Rip, could work nicely.
but anyway, i have no problem in the Hawks trade Marvin or Zaza for a second round pick, if they can get a guy like Wade, Lebron, or Bosh.

The last thing I want to see us do is get smaller and I prefer more versatile players.

The Hawks can't get another free agent if Joe leaves because they still won't have any meaningful caproom.

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
It's a very tough question that I haven't been able to decide my position yet. We won't be able to replace him with a max player because of salary cap realities, so in all likelihood the team gets worse if they don't sign him. However I'm not certain if I was an owner that I would be quick to invest in another 5 years of Joe. I worry about him breaking down and the advantages of his game not being sustainable over that time. He also doesn't have that sizzle to him that sells a lot of tickets that I think you'd prefer out of a max investment. Signing him does probably insure a solid multiple-year window of playoff appearances. Whether that translates to more profit is unsure. I'll have to see how everyone plays over the next 2-3 months and reevaluate the situation prior to the trade deadline.

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
I'd see if we couldn't S&T him for a S&T'd Wade, Bosh, or Amare (or LeBron for the lulz).
If we can't, I think Joe/Zaza for Ray Allen, Kendrick Perkins, and picks would be nice, or some combo of power big man and good/great veteran SG who can play off the ball.

I really really doubt hell get S&T but thats the best option. I dont know if he realizes hes hurting the team or if hes just trying to earn more money this offseason by putting up stats.

just like in the Crawford situation a year ago, i don't know why people are making this more complicated then it has to be.
no Joe: 10M in cap
Zaza for a 2nd round pick: 14M in cap
Marvin for a 2nd round pick: 17M in cap
Marvin and Zaza for a 2nd round pick: 21M in cap
i'm a fan of Marvin, but i don't think any Hawks fan has a problem in letting Marvin go to a better situation if that means getting a Lebron or Wade or Bosh.

How many teams are under the cap and can absorb 11, or even 7 million?

The more important question is what teams would be willing to take on that much when it would cost them THEIR chance at signing a big time free agent. (like Joe Johnson)

Re: Should the Hawks resign Joe?
Cap is 60.7 MM right now. Only teams that could pick up
Marvin:
OKC, or with a minimum contract added Minnesota and Memphis
Zaza:
Minnesota, Memphis, OKC, or with a minimum contract added Nets and Blazers
OKC would probably take Zaza, and Minnesota would probably take Marvin. That begs the question though, are we comfortable giving away our young starting SF and our beloved backup C for picks and the idea that we can sign a max FA next year? I'm a bit tentative.
Maybe if we get Minnesota's unprotected first; then we'll get a Top 5 pick this year to pair with LeBron
Bibby/Crawford/LeBron/Smoove/Horford with Derrick Favors coming off the bench

riddle me this....... can the Hawks ever win a championship without a top 5 player? can the Hawks ever win a championship with the current roster?
if fans want a championship, then you get the cap room and make a decent offer to an elite player. not that many teams are lucky enough to get a top 5 player, and Hawks are actually in a position in a long time to get a top 5 player. when else in ATL history has the team looked this attrative for a free agent.
personally, i think , as long as you have Smith, Horford, and a decent perimiter player (like Crawford) then the Hawks can be a playoff team.
i like Marvin, but honestly, i don't think he adds that many wins for the Hawks. If Marvin didn't play this year, i still think the Hawks finish as a top 4 team in the east.
honestly, Bibby/Crawford/LeBron/Smoove/Horford could win a championship right now.
worst case, Bibby/Crawford/Mo or TBA FA/Smoove/Horford could finish maybe 5th or 6th in the east

I have to think Minnesota would love to have Marvin Williams.

their are a few and both Marvin and Zaza are quality guys who could help a good team. once the summer comes around and alot of team shed their expirerings, ideally, these two moves could be worked out:
Marvin to Portland
Zaza to San Antonio
both teams could have the cap room to pick up both guys for a 2nd round pick.

Wait a minute. As the resident Marvelous fan, I'd have to protest trading him for just a 2nd. Come on, that's silly.
Now, if we could acquire Wade ... and had to trade Marvelous to get him...
Let's face it, Wade would mean entrance into the NBA championship-contention club.
