Pistons-Bulls Preview
Ben Gordon has probably been looking forward to facing the Chicago Bulls since signing with the Detroit Pistons over the summer. A sprained ankle, though, could prevent that from happening Wednesday night. Gordon hopes to be able to play against his former team for the first time as the Pistons visit the Bulls. Drafted third overall by Chicago in 2004, Gordon led the Bulls in scoring the past four seasons but said in July that they never offered him a contract once he hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Detroit signed him to a five-year deal worth $50-plus million. "I mean they didn't pursue me at all. They didn't even make an offer so it was pretty much a one-man race," Gordon told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago in July. He got off to a strong start with Detroit (6-11) before getting hurt against Cleveland last Wednesday, averaging a team-high 19.8 points. Gordon missed the last two games, but practiced Monday and is listed as questionable. "It's feeling pretty good," Gordon told the Pistons' official Web site. "If it continues to progress the way it has been, hopefully I'll be able to play on Wednesday." The Bulls (6-9) could have used Gordon's scoring on their annual circus road trip. They opened the trip with a 101-87 win over Sacramento on Nov. 17 before dropping the last five matchups. Chicago failed to score more than 100 in any of the five defeats while allowing opponents to average 109.2 points.

The Bulls had their best defensive effort since the win over the Kings on Monday night. They rallied from 14 down in the third quarter to take a two-point lead in the closing minutes, but Brad Miller missed a shot at the buzzer that would have tied it and Chicago fell 99-97. "That's a shot I've shot a lot," Miller told the Bulls' official Web site. "It just came up short. ... It's well in my range. I felt comfortable. Just didn't make it. Now we've got to take advantage of these home games coming up and get back on the winning ways." Chicago plays 16 of its next 23 at the United Center before heading out on a season-high seven-game trip at the end of January. The Bulls have played the fewest home games in the league, going 4-1 and holding opponents to 86.8 points per game. "I know how hard it is from last year to get back to .500," point guard Derrick Rose said. "We've got to take advantage." The Bulls' first chance to get on track comes against a Pistons team that ended a seven-game losing streak by beating Atlanta 94-88 on Sunday.

Detroit was led by another former Bull, Ben Wallace, who had 11 of the team's 24 offensive rebounds. Wallace, traded to Cleveland in February 2008 after spending a season and a half with Chicago, finished with 18 rebounds and 10 points. "Ben was phenomenal again today," coach John Kuester said. "It's amazing the level that he is still grabbing rebounds." Wallace led the NBA in rebounding twice in his first stint in Detroit, averaging 13.0 in 2001-02 and 15.4 in '02-'03. He has started every game this season, grabbing 9.9 boards per contest. Wallace's strong play is coming at a good time for the Pistons, who have been playing with a limited roster because of injuries to starters Richard Hamilton (ankle), Tayshaun Prince (back) and Gordon (ankle). On Sunday, forward Charlie Villanueva was hit in the face while being fouled and suffered a broken nose. He is listed as questionable for Wednesday. Chicago took three of four meetings with Detroit in each of the last three seasons, winning all six matchups at home.

Tayshaun Prince may see time at power forward when he returns
As the Pistons' season threatens to end before it has barely begun, there is one question that keeps being repeated: How will those who have been trying to keep the team above water respond when Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton return from injuries?

Jonas Jerebko is the Best Swedish-Born Player in NBA History
That’s not all he is. In addition to being the best Swedish-born player to ever don a NBA jersey, Detroit Pistons rookie forward Jonas Jerebko is also the country’s tallest, fastest, smartest, and most athletic import, as well as its most prolific contributor on the NBA stats sheet. All of this, and his NBA career has only spanned 15 regular-season games. Okay, fine… he’s also the only Swedish-born player to ever play in the NBA, but exaggerations aside, this kid is making a name for himself. In fact, he’s made a more significant impact for his injury-riddled Pistons than many of the 38 players drafted before him have made for their respective squads. (On a side note, for a rookie class that was billed as one of the weakest in recent history, I’ve been impressed by the number of solid contributors who’ve already carved out a role for themselves on teams both in and out of contention. Keep it up, gentlemen.) The 22-year-old Jerebko, taken 39th overall after spending a few seasons in the Italian League, was pressed into extended action much earlier than most anticipated after incumbent starter Tayshaun Prince went down with a ruptured disc in his back. I’d seen flashes of Jerebko’s potential during his appearances in the Las Vegas Summer League, but we all know that most everything you see there is but a passing desert mirage: rarely does production in those glorified pickup games translate to anything tangible at the actual NBA level. In this case, however, Jerebko has actually topped his Summer League play.

Through 15 games, Jerebko is averaging entirely modest measurables: 6.5 points (on 47% FG), 4.7 boards, 0.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks in just over 25 minutes a night. His greatest value, however, falls squarely under that somewhat cliched “intangibles” umbrella: he’s a basketball garbage man who does the kind of dirty work that the league’s very best glue players relish. Comparisons to Utah Jazz irritant Matt Harpring wouldn’t be offbase, though Jerebko seems to have more upside: he hustles and fights for loose balls, hits the glass (hard), cans open triples when the opportunity presents itself, and perhaps most importantly, assumes the unenviable task of guarding All-Pro forwards and shooting guards. That list already includes guys named LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Joe Johnson, Jason Richardson, Brandon Roy, Andre Iguodala, Hedo Turkoglu, and Caron Butler. His opponents have made him look foolish, but more often than not, he’s held his own, as much as any rookie dubbed a “long-term project” could be expected to against such elite competition. I’d argue that in some of those matchups, he’s actually acquitted himself better than Prince has in recent seasons (which isn’t to say that Prince isn’t still a better overall option, on both sides of the floor). In that sense, Prince’s injury has been somewhat of a blessing in disguise for Jerebko; his early-season experience against players of this caliber will prove invaluable in his development and adjustment to the rigors of NBA life. Defense and rebounding is where the 6-10 Swede will be asked to hang his hat during his rookie season, and if you’ve seen his, ahem, unpolished offensive repertoire in action, you’d know why. There’s nothing pretty about his sweeping hook shots in the lane, his clumsy dribble drives, or his awkward free-throws, though he has shown competency from behind the arc.

His lack of offensive grace is okay though; he’s shown more on both ends of the floor than expected, and as Patrick Hayes wrote on Full Court Press, defense, rebounding, hustle, and the occasional offensive cherry aren’t the only things that have separated Jerebko from fellow rookies Austin Daye (15th overall) and DaJuan Summers (35th): A commonality among rookies, particularly less heralded ones like the Pistons have, is for them to become timid when they make a mistake or two offensively. Jerebko does the exact opposite: he seems to become more motivated and active after he makes a bad play. He fights to get the ball back and doesn’t stop trying to make things happen. Sometimes it results in poor possessions or mistakes or ugly basketball. But one thing it doesn’t result in is allowing the opposing defender to rest against him. If a player becomes timid on offense or doesn’t want the ball, it’s quite easy for the other team to ignore him. Jerebko’s made a lot of mistakes, but his ability to compete keeps him on the court consistently and is turning him into a very important player.Casual NBA fans might scan the early-season standings and see the Pistons have sunk to the bottom of the Central Division with an underwhelming 6-11 record. Not surprising given the lingering injuries to Prince, Rip Hamilton, and now Ben Gordon, but Jerebko is one of the new additions that’s made this team watchable again. Last season, they mostly were not. They might be on the thin side of the NBA talent pendulum, but they scrap, they claw, and they fight. There’s a difference between listless, aimless sub-.500 teams and those that play with a purpose; thus far, the Pistons have proven their mettle. And though that ethos didn’t start with Jerebko–that’s Ben Wallace’s job–the best Swedish-born player in NBA history has bought into it, and has been a big part of it. God utställning, Jonas, God utställning.

Pistons report: Getting inside
Head coach John Kuester has to be creative with so many top players out of action. Kuester shook up his lineup Sunday against Atlanta, and the team snapped its seven-game losing streak. Kuester moved Charlie Villanueva to the bench and started Jason Maxiell at power forward. He also inserted third-stringer Chucky Atkins at the point and moved Rodney Stuckey to shooting guard.Villanueva responded with 13 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes before breaking his nose in the fourth quarter. He's questionable for Wednesday's game at Chicago. If Villanueva is out, the Pistons will likely be playing a division rival without their four highest-paid players. Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon are recovering from ankle sprains, and Tayshaun Prince is sidelined with a back injury. "We have to have a defensive presence," Kuester said of his power forward switch. "You go through a stretch like that, sometimes you've got to make adjustments. It was a healthy change for us. I'm proud of the way Charlie responded."

Atkins didn't contribute much statistically, but the offense ran more smoothly and Stuckey made a seamless transition to the off-guard spot. He had 23 points and eight assists. "It wasn't by design to say we're taking Stuckey off the ball," Kuester said. "He's comfortable at both positions. He's comfortable at the three spot (small forward), too. He's doesn't care. He's a player."The shakeup gave the Pistons the jolt they needed to avoid long scoring droughts. They'd often dig a double-digit hole during the slide, then make a belated fourth-quarter rally. "Some of the games were on us," Stuckey said. "We get down by 15, 18, 20 points and then all of a sudden in the fourth quarter we just want to start playing hard. We'd use a lot of energy trying to come back and just end up losing by six or seven points. Today, we stuck with it and got a victory."

PISTONS 94, HAWKS 88: The Pistons won the game with extra effort and hustle, outrebounding the Hawks 53-27 while ending their seven-game losing streak Sunday. They had a 60-38 advantage in points in the paint and 30-10 dominance in second-chance points. Will Bynum had 19 points off the bench, including two free throws in the final minute after the Hawks cut an 11-point deficit earlier in the quarter to two.

Charlie goes under the knife, Gordon questionable
If you follow Charlie Villanueva on Twitter, you’ve already seen this pic, but that’s our friend CV31 sending out a pre-surgical tweet: “At the Detroit Metro Center (DMC) Hospital, about to start to preparation for my nasal surgery, had to get a tweet out. Wish me good luck :)”.

You can only squeeze so much in 140 characters or less, and unfortunately an explanation for why a guy with no hair is wearing a hairnet was left out. Oh well. Fortunately, everything went according to plan, or so he tweeted five hours later: “Just letting everyone know that,I had successful surgery 2day for my broken nose, thanks every1 for showing me love, I greatly appreciate it”

He’ll be fitted with a mask a la Rip Hamilton, but it’s still up in the air when he’ll return to action — it could be as soon as Wednesday in Chicago, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think he’ll miss at least one game. As it happens, it seems like Ben Gordon (sprained ankle) has the same timetable: Gordon did some light work on the side but didn’t appear capable of putting too much weight on his left side. “If it continues to progress as it has been, hopefully I’ll be able to play,” said Gordon, who would like to play his first game against the Bulls, for whom he starred the last five seasons.
