K-1 WGP Final - Dec 5

Post#1 » by CPT » Sat Dec 5, 2009 1:31 am

Anyone care about this?

There are some other fights, like Kyotaro vs. Tyrone Spoong, but the real draw is obviously the tournament.

Ruslan Karaev vs. Badr Hari
Ewerton Teixeira vs. Alistair Overeem
Jerome LeBanner vs. Semmy Schilt
Errol Zimmerman vs. Remy Bonjasky

then

Karaev/Hari vs. Teixeira/Overeem
JLB/Schilt vs. Zimmerman/Remy

and the final.

The reserve fights are Daniel Ghita vs. Sergei Kharitonov and Peter Aerts vs. Gokhan Saki

I'm rooting for Overeem in this one, and I think he has a decent chance of winning it. He'll likely have to go through Hari and then Remy to do it though.

I wanna see Hari vs Overeem!

Hopefully Overeem takes the title and builds up more hype for a title defense against Fedor.

From his youtube clips Bonjasky seems interesting too. K1 is awesome to watch too bad I have a 6 hour exam that day and then again Tuesday :(

It's going to be an awesome event, not going to stay up all night to watch it but it's definitely something I'll PVR. I'm rooting for Overeem as well but I don't think he'll get by Hari. Uber knocked him out before but Badr took him lightly, something he will not do this time around. Then again, you have to wonder what kind of mental state Hari is in considering his gym burnt down to the ground a week or so ago.

Something to consider though, does Strikeforce want Overeem to win or not? I think they definitely do. If he wins, it definitely adds to the hype for a showdown with Fedor.. However if he were to win would he start fighting more with K1 and less with SF? A GP win would be good publicity short term but I'm not sure what the long term ramifications will be. Regardless, it's not like Overeem was ever going to fight exclusively with Sf anyways.

I caught the quarters live and watched the rest this morning. Amazing event! It's crazy how many first round KO's there were. Schilt was amazing, sucks that Hari couldn't keep his composure. I thought Badr would take it after he destroyed Overeem. Also sucks to see JBL go out like that.

On a side note, Mike Schiavello is the worst sports commentator ever and it's not even close. The guy is an absolute clown and his reaction after the Hari/AO fight was a disgrace.

I hate that guy, but thankfully I was watching the Korean broadcast, so I didn't have to deal with him. What did he say?

I was actually a little disappointed in how fast the fights went because of the 2 knockdown rule. I understand why they used it, and usually if there are 2 knockdowns, the third comes fairly quickly, but in all those fast finishes, Overeem had the only real KO.

Hari outclassed Overeem, but I felt the second "knockdown" was kind of a **** way to end that fight, since all he really did was stagger back into the ropes. Remy did the same thing later and it wasn't called a knockdown.

Still good fights and a good event though.

This fight makes me think Hari took the fight with AO too much on short notice last year, and that's why he lost so badly.

Btw the announcers were really unprofessional, I know AO bashed kb as a sport but that reaction was unacceptable.

**** I wanted Hari to win.

After watching the event it really shows how much size/length is a factor. I guess those push kicks by Semmy really knocked the wind out of those guys. His first fight with Le Banner was ridiculous.

wow, early stoppages FTL.

I'm not watching K-1 in quite some time unless a UFC/former MMA fighter goes there.

K1 has a 2 knockdown rule (3 knockdowns in the 3rd round), they weren't early stoppages. If they switched to classic Muay Thai rules there would be serious injuries in each event. These are the best strikers in the world, getting dropped 5-6 times in a round could cause major damage. I agree it is frustrating at times but it's for the fighters safety. I would like to see them stretch hit out to 3 knockdowns for each round though.

CPT, Sciavello and Kogan were literally jumping for joy and high fiving each other when AO lost (they cut to them after the TKO and they were literally acting like schoolgirls). They were openly rooting for Badr during the fight, Schiavello was shouting for Hari to "knock that bastard out" (refering to AO). I am not exaggerating, that is a direct quote from the live broadcast. It was an embarrassment.
