"Coach" Kevin Martin

Post#1 » by KF10 » Tue Dec 8, 2009 8:21 am

There is an article in the Bee that shows what Kevin did throughout his days in recovery phase. Sponsoring various charities, helping families in Sacramento and Zanesville. You know, typical good guy Martin stuff. But the article reiterated that Martin is an "unofficial" assistant coach for the Kings. Here is some snippets of the article:

Martin has managed to keep his head up this time, mainly because he has pursued new challenges and charities to help fill his time. He has doubled his typical holiday load on the giving front, helping families in Sacramento and his hometown of Zanesville, Ohio. And whether Kings coach Paul Westphal knows it or not, Martin has deemed himself the team's newest assistant coach.

It's partly comic relief and partly serious. Martin has been smooth-talking his way into coach's meetings to hear about that night's opponent and routinely pulling teammates aside during games to offer observations and advice. His miserable experience last season, Martin said, was the inspiration.

"Last year when I got hurt, I wasn't really around that much, and when I came back it was like a new player got drafted," said Martin, who was averaging 30.6 points per game before his surgery. "This time, I'm trying to stay involved with the team, helping during the game, helping guys. I've been trying to talk to (rookie guard) Tyreke (Evans), telling him things. I'm telling Spencer (Hawes), when he gets an offensive rebound down low, don't look to pass out, go back up with it."

Glad to see the part where Kevin specifically talks about how he'll be playing off the ball, not being ball-dominant. Nice to hear that confirmed.

The other stuff is nice to hear too. I like that he's staying more involved with the team.

He looked like he was guiding Tyreke in TOs in the Miami game, wearing a terrible jacket at that.

well if he's that much into coaching maybe he should read a scouting report on himself and try some D.

This is the part I find most interesting. There is more in the article actually which I find more interesting. Basically he says how he fits well with Tyreke (saying he scores in the flow of the game and he isn't ball dominant). Almost as if he's reading the forums seeing the worries of fans who don't think he'll mesh with Evans and is reassuring us that he will.
