OT Kaman and Vit D Deficiency

Post#1 » by exculpatory » Wed Dec 9, 2009 6:21 am

The article linked up top is way off medically speaking. Vit D deficiency is part of endocrinology = me. If anyone is interested, I will write a longer post when I have some time, and explain all of the causes of Vit D deficiency and all of the consequences of being Vit D deficient.

30 Second Simplified Version:

1. Main causes or "etiologies":

----Lack of Vit D "input" (either dietary insufficiency and/or inadequate sunlight which results in less Vit D production in the skin). This is the most common etiology in the geriatric population, and institutionalized patients of any age.
----Malabsorption. There are many many causes of malabsorption. The one most familiar to you guys may be celiac disease - which can affect anyone at any age.

2. Consequences:

----Osteomalacia (also known as rickets in children) - bone has adequate matrix but is inadequately mineralized. In recent years, we have found many older women with osteoporosis
ALSO have osteomalacia.
----Hypocalcemia (low blood calcium), secondary hyperparathyroidism, and eventually hypophosphatemia (low blood phosphate)
----In the last decade, there has been an explosion of research suggesting that Vit D may have important beneficial effects independent of maintaining healthy bone and a normal serum calcium. It may be play a role, for example, in maintaining the immune response, cancer prevention etc. This remains to be proven in well done clinical trials.

Bottom-line: Everyone should maintain a level of 25 OH Vitamin D in excess of 25-30 (but beware too much Vit D replacement which can result in Vit D toxicity/hypercalcemia). If Vit D deficiency is diagnosed, it is as equally important to determine the underlying cause as it is to treat the deficiency.

GO CELTICS! I am going to Wiz game on Thursday night - I am psyched! KM and Loscy - please make the Victory Cigar thread. Wait a minute. I can post from my iPhone! If you see me sitting in the second row behind the Wiz bench wearing a green Celtic sweatshirt, please post it in the game thread - and please be kind. LOL. The last time I sat there, we kicked their asses, and Spencer Haywood was giving me nasty looks because I guess I got a little overexcited. Another time (before KG and Ray had arrived), I took my daughters. Agent Zero hits go ahead J with 5 seconds left, and literally flips off the Boston bench with both hands. Then the Truth hits gamewinning J at the buzzer with Agent ****, Butler and Antawn all rushing at him, and I went insane! Some of you must remember that game. Vintage clutch Truth! And then 1 of my girls says to me "Did something good happen?". This is the same girl who said to me at half-time, "Dad, can we leave now? I want to go shopping.". LOL.
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Interesting stuff, Ex; post more if you've got the time.

I've always looked at Kaman and said to myself "this dude looks like he's got the rickets." I mean, doesn't he look like a scuzzy pirate, or what? I always got an unhealthy vibe from him.
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

I'm just here for the memes.

Omega Red! Oh man, Kaman totally looks like that.

Exculpatory, interesting post. I read about Chris Kaman's vitamin D deficiency last night, and it was interesting to me, because both of my parents and I suffer from vitamin D deficiency. My father and I keep it under control with a daily tablet (800 units), and have had no trouble, since our deficiencies are slight. My mother, however, also suffers from hypothyroidism, and is suffering from a huge vitamin D deficiency, so much so that the pills she takes make her queasy.

I read your post to her, and she was very interested, since her deficiency was recently discovered and she's trying with her doctors and my dad (who is also a doctor, but not an endocrinologist) to get her deficiency under control. Thanks for the post; very timely! It's like you read my mind!

Also, have fun at the Wiz game! I haven't been able to go to any games this season, since I regrettably moved out of Boston after five glorious years. Cheer extra loud for all of us, my friend!

Exculpatory,

in 20+ years of watching the C's that was one of my top 5 favorite Celtics moments. I went so nuts after the Truth set us free that night that the friggin bartender gave me everything on the house that night. It was much appreciated too, i was a poor third year law student in Atlanta at the time.

Athanacropolis,

You can email me or IM me under the name Atorvastat (Atorvastatin = Lipitor) at either AOL or Yahoo Messenger if you want more "private" feedback about your mom. Her hypothyroidism (which I assume is being properly treated) does not necessarily tie in to her Vit D deficiency. I can refer to an excellent endo doc in your city if you want me to.

Thx for interest. I will post more about this another day if u want.

ALTC,

The moment was truly awesome - the look on Agent Douchebag's face and the stunned silence of 19K people was priceless! Can you find it on U tube somewhere and email it to me or post the link here? I bet you that the Truth has hit at least 50 last second or last minute CLUTCH shots like that in his 11 year HOF career so far.

Needless to say, I have never spent 350 bucks again taking my older daughter to a game again. My younger girl, on the other hand, wears my green Celtic hat, and at least tries to get into the game a little bit - as does my GF.

I always though he looked borderline albino.
I'd still trade for him though.

That's the Wizards game being discussed. I had completely forgot about that game. I remember when Pierce drove straight into the double team I just thought what the hell is he doing? Thank it went in, I just went ****.

Thanks for the link!

Every Celtic fan should have it!

If I knew how (I have limited computer skills, LOL), I would start a new thread with it, and share it with every Celtic fanatic on this board!
