Love: Starter or 6th Man?

Post#1 » by Klomp » Thu Dec 10, 2009 1:35 am

What's better for him and our team? I personally am liking how well we've played with him as a 6th man, and I like how the starters have played.

As long as he gets in the mid-high 30s for minutes and is in there for important possessions, it doesn't matter to me. I mean, Manu is a "6th man" and I'd say Love could be that sort of guy; very talented and tons of impact despite not being on the floor at the very beginning of a game.

I agree with the statement of he can fit in whenever.

I just think Rambis plans on starting him sooner rather than later. I think long term he's a NBA starter, not a bench player. Not that I don't like him in that role.

Love doesn't make an impression of an iron man, so i think playing him 30-32 min will be better for him and if wolves get a defensive minded 7-footer to start, Love would be a great boost of the bench and apparently he doesn't mind coming off the bench as long as he gets good minutes.

If Gomes isn't in our long term plans, than maybe we can increase his value as the starting power forward.

Love easily would win the 6th man of the year if he came off the bench.

just looking at the progression of Love from college to a rookie to now, he's looking a lot quicker, leaner and has more energy. I could easily see him being middle 30's in minutes next year.

QFT

People make too much of "starter" or "bench", in reality a good team has an 8-9 man solid rotation. If love is playing approx 30min a game then why does it matter if he starts or comes off the bench? People simply make too much of this and it does not matter.

I think it's an issue if the player makes at an issue.

True. But if a player would make them an issue, that would show signs of a chemistry issue and that same player might complain about minutes or shots.

This. As long as he's playing 30+ minutes and especially the critical ones, then either way is fine.

If I HAD to say, I'd say start him, but either way is cool.

I agree getting 30+ minutes is key, but 20 of those minutes aren't with Al Jefferson. Wayne Ellington needs to start as well. Corey Brewer has the worst jumpshot in NBA history. Big Al and Love just dominate teams in the post and Ellington would space the floor better any give them even more opportunities for offensive rebounds

Bringing arguably your best player off the bench is fricking stupid. All you've accomplished is handcuffing yourself on getting that guy minutes. Sure, he can get 30 MPG a night, but what if you need to play him 40+ minutes on a given night in order to win. Pretty much impossible coming off the bench. Not to mention any NBA player worth a lick wants to start whether they admit it or not, coming off the bench in favor of someone clearly much worse than you will not sit well long term.

Everyone always brings up Manu, because there is no-one else to be brought up. Manu is the exception that proves the rule.

This isn't rocket science. Start your best players!

Among players with at least 8 3PA, Kevin Love leads the league in 3P%.

I wish the Wolves had three of him.
