Gathright signs a minor league deal, Chavez/Bautista return

Post#1 » by Schad » Sun Dec 13, 2009 6:42 pm

Per Bastian, Gathright and Chavez have signed minor-league deals, and Bautista and McGowan have been re-signed for $2.4m and $500k, respectively.

I don't mind any of the deals...Gathright will compete for a bench spot, but there's a decent chance he'll be the CF in Las Vegas to begin the year. Bautista probably isn't worth $2.4m, but there are worse ways to spend the money.

Bautista just a 1 year deal? Decent role player for one year where this year is not on our goals list.

Solid signings. Bautista is a great utility guy with 15 homer pop, and, he had a career high OBP of .349. I'd say he earned that 2.4m. Chavez is a great defensive catcher which you really need in a backup.

I'd love for the Jays to sign Ryan Church to platoon with Bautista...he might cost ~$3m, but he's the type of guy that could be spun off at the trade deadline for a little value.

I was just thinking that they should make a run at Jack Cust, who was non-tendered by Oakland. He'd bring some power and he draws a lot of walks, which would be a big help. Because he bounced around a lot before finding a spot with the A's his price should be fairly reasonable too.

no thanks to jack cust, you'll appreciate this much more once you consider how much vernon wells and travis snider will strike out already.

That's presumptuous. I don't particularly care how much he strikes out if he's going to walk 100 times, which is something no one on the team currently will do.

Cust as DH ain't bad. Bautista as OF/3rd base is decent. If the Jays don't pick up anyone for Halladay to play 3rd, he could be a full timer there.

So, I guess we'll see McGowan in September if we're lucky. I'm thinking more Spring Training 2015 at this rate.
