I honestly dont know because for whatever reason we appear to be set on Happ? From my standpoint he is going to fall back down to earth and is thus a throw-in. If our people like him that much then Happ + Taylor (top prospect) is a very nice starting point, and Bastardo (their #7 prospect on BA's new rankings) is a LHP with a pretty good arm.

Yeah, I'm with you...I don't like Happ. His peripherals just scream fluke.

That Philly deal is about what I expected. One top prospect, a "good" established player, plus filler.

Is Michael Taylor a better prospect than Dominic Brown? I thought Brown was their #1??

Brown is rated higher because has more upside due to his added athleticism and thus added defensive value (Brown = RF whereas most people expect Taylor to be an average LF at best defensively), but other than that it can pretty much go either way. Taylor is the more proven/accomplished player whereas Brown doesn't have the track record yet but has shown strong signs that his tools are turning into skills.

Not a fan of Happ either, but a Phillies deal beats the hell out of any Angels package that doesn't have Weaver and Napoli, so let's just take what we can get from Philly and get this over with please.

Personally, I'd request Drabek and Brown/Taylor just like in July because they actually need Doc even more now. Then I'd haggle down from there to a minimum of Brown/Taylor and D'Arnaud, their catching prospect who is one the best catching prospects overall.

Taylor is closer to MLB ready (he turns 24 soon) but I like Brown a bit more due to his age (22). Those two years make a difference as far as development time. Outside of that, their offensive upsides seem pretty similar. We don't need a young player to come in right away, especially since we figure to suck for the next few years anyway. If we can get a guy like Brown and start him in AA, that would be fine with me. Taylor would probably win the LF job out of ST.

Drabek and Brown would be ideal, but I can see why Philly is trying to trade the more MLB ready players (Taylor and Happ). They'll need Drabek and Brown in a few years when their core starts to age, whereas it would be hard to stash Taylor in the minors for much longer and I'm guessing they are (smartly) trying to sell high on Happ.

If Happ has to be in the deal, I would try to flip him to a 3rd team. I'm guessing Happ comes with some value as he is a lefty with a career 9.0+ K/9 in the minors and is coming off a very good year for a WS team. Then again, the Jays seemed interested in Happ at the deadline, and the front office is pretty similar to the one in place six months ago (minus JP obviously), so maybe they just really like Happ.

Ken Rosenthal speculates that the Phillies might move Cliff Lee to get prospects to trade for Halladay, which likely makes sense to no one save for Ken Rosenthal. If you make it all the way to the bottom, his suggested deal is kinda sorta something like this:

Phillies trade: Lee, Brown/Taylor, ?
Receive: Halladay, ?

Mariners trade: Aumont (RHP)/Michael Saunders (OF), Adam Moore (C)/Carlos Triunfel (SS), or something.
Receive: Lee.

Jays trade: Halladay.
Receive: Brown/Taylor, Aumont/Saunders, Moore/Triunfel.

I think. Rosenthal's wild speculation has been getting wilder by the minute of late, and there are strands of not-fully-elucidated thoughts that appear and disappear in his mini-column, so really I have no idea exactly what he's saying, and have absolutely no reason to post this at all. So there's that.

Jayson Stark says we're asking for Trevor Reckling from the Angels (their top pitching prospect).

This was just on the FAN a few minutes ago. The Phillies are now the leading, if not the primary trade candidate.

Apparently Halladay's agent is talking to that team about an extention and Halladay is due for a physical this week. so the trade will possibly take place within the next 48 hrs.

i'll update it once i hear the source (nothing on ESPN.com). updated the thread title as well.

Fever Pitch: Trade Talks for Halladay Heating Up

Monday, December 14, 2009

By Jim Salisbury
CSNPhilly.com

The Phillies’ pursuit of Toronto ace Roy Halladay appears to be reaching a boil.

Two baseball sources told CSNPhilly.com Monday that the team is actively talking about a contract extension with representatives for the 32-year-old righthander. It is likely that the Phillies would want to sign Halladay to an extension before they traded for him. Without an extension, Halladay would be eligible for free agency after the 2010 season.

One of the sources said that Halladay is likely to have a physical exam with Phillies' medical personal this week.

Halladay has a no-trade clause, but would waive it to come to Philadelphia.

It is unclear which players the Phillies would send to the Blue Jays if the deal happens, but there were indications Monday that pitcher Cliff Lee could be traded. Trading Lee would help the Phillies get the prospects needed to complete the deal with Toronto. It would also free up $9 million in salary that would help the Phillies take on Halladay’s $15.75 million salary for 2010.

The Phils tried to trade for Halladay in July. They picked up Lee from the Indians instead. Five months later, Halladay might finally be on his way to Philadelphia.

Blue Jays: Report: Halladay in Philadelphia
The News
Updating an earlier item, the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay and his agent are currently in Philadelphia, signaling that a trade could be imminent.

Our View
This could mean the Phils and Halladay are seeing if they could work out a contract extension before a trade that would send him to the City of Brotherly Love is finalized. Multiple reports have the Halladay situation coming to a head in the next few days, so expect more updates soon.

The News
The Blue Jays and Phillies are currently discussing a "blockbuster" three-team trade for Roy Halladay, according to Fox Sports.

Our View
But that would only be the half of it. Supposedly, the deal would send current Phillies ace Cliff Lee to an unknown third team. The Angels, Red Sox and Mariners are all rumored to be the potential third team. The report also says a standard two-team trade between Philly and Toronto for Halladay is still possible. There is surely a lot more where this came from, so stay tuned.

that's from fanball.com.....interested to see what transpires

I'm not sure that I can live in a world where Ken Rosenthal's random speculation is correct. Is something like Happ, Aybar/Napoli and Taylor coming our way, with Halladay and some other value (either from us or the Angels) too much to ask?

Would the Phillies really give up Taylor/Brown AND Lee to get Halladay? Is the difference between the two really worth that? This report actually makes me worried that the Phillies aren't looking to deal either of those two guys and just want to give us Happ, some less prospects, and what they get for Lee.

If I was the Phillies, I'd rather have Halladay AND Lee than Halladay and Taylor or something. You might as well for for the World Series juggular now if you're making a Halladay move

I just assume our GM will go for the best deal. That said, I'm ecstatic the best deal might send him to the NL, and for an extension, too!!

WE wouldn't be getting Lee. He would be going to a 3rd team and then Philly would send us some sort of package using their own prospects + prospects they get for Lee.

The 3rd team I have heard could be Seattle.

According to the Phillies beatwriter, the 3 team trade is plausible.

Halladay and agent in Philadelphia
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay and his agent have checked into a Philadelphia-area hotel, according to two Inquirer sources.

It is not known if a trade sending Halladay to the Phillies is imminent, but if Halladay and the Phils are negotiating--as is indicated by the pitcher's presence in Philadelphia--that would suggest that the Phils and Blue Jays are far enough along in talks for Halladay to discuss a potential contract extension with the Phils. Halladay has one year remaining on his contract before becoming a free agent.

The Phils have long been linked to Halladay, and were actively involved in trade talks last July, before the team acquired lefthander Cliff Lee from Cleveland.

UPDATE, 3:04-- The plot thickens: Foxsports.com has added that the Phils are in talks regading a potential three-team deal that would send lefthander Cliff Lee to an unnamed club. This makes sense for a number of reasons:

--Lee is owed $9 million next year, and the Phils need to clear payroll to sign Halladay.

--Lee will be a free agent after this season, and if he tests the open market the Phils would find it difficult to re-sign him, given their already robust payroll.

--Acquiring Lee may net the Phils some of the prospects requried to complete a deal, without having to give up players like pitcher J.A. Happ and Kyle Drabek, outfielders Domonic Brown, Michael Taylor and Anthony Gose.

Heard Seattle the 3rd team as well with Saunders & Aumont as part of the package.

BTW there is a rumor going around that the Halladay extension is finalized and the only thing left now is an agreement on what players are going where.

Representatives of Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay are rumoured to be discussing a possible contract extension with the Phillies, while Halladay himself has checked into a Philadelphia hotel room according to media reports.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/2009/1 ... ay_rumour/

Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia is reporting that two sources have said that the Phillies are actively talking contract and that Halladay is likely to have a physical exam with Philadelphia's medical personnel this week.

Meanwhile, sources have told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Halladay and his agent have checked into a Philadelphia-area hotel.

Foxsports.com is reporting that as of shortly after 3 p.m. Monday the commissioner's office had not yet granted the Phillies permission to discuss an extension with Halladay. Judging by that, it would appear that an agreement is not imminent today.
