Great news.

In 5 years, Gasol will probably be the greatest power forward in Laker history (heck, he might already be closing in on that if you define Worthy and Baylor as SFs).

Once we get Kobe locked up we're looking at a minimum of Bryant, Odom, Bynum, Gasol and Artest for the next 3 playoff runs. That's pretty strong.

k, well, the celtics will likely be done next year or in two years becasue they are all old.
the cavaliers are likely losing shaq and ilgauskas after this year to retirement.
spurs are already done.
mavericks are poo.
i dont see portland going anywhere in the future with Oden getting crazy injuries every year.
atlanta cant beat us.
so far, the knicks, heat, thunder are not complete yet, but might be after free agecy 2010, so they should all be very good teams for a long time with young stars.
the magic are pretty young i guess.. and thhey will be good for a few more years, but we are much better.
so that means we should win the championship for another 10-30 years straight, right? unless one of these old, very good teams gets another really good player.

Pau is the greatest PF in LA Lakers history there no LA Lakers PF's jerseys in rafters. The only Lakers PF's in the rafters are Jim Pollard and Clyde Lovelette and they played for the Minneapolis Lakers.
Its strange to say this considering the Lakers great history but Pau is probably the best PF the Lakers have had in 50 yrs.

Nice. Looks like we'll be watching Kobe and Pau together for the rest of #24's career.
Thank you, Phil.

ouch, thats a max extension. lakers are blackballing themselves into only being able to sign (low) draft picks and FAs

but to be guaranteed another 3 years of top 2/3 PF play (dirk, declining duncan and declining KG) seems a little price to pay

dr buss, staying true to his word that he will be willing to pay to keep this team together. pau gasol was worth ~15mil per before this season started in an extension, and has played himself into a ~22mil per extension.

good for him

Some year the Lakers will have to shed some money. It looks like it will not be till about 2015 when the Lakers will have a payroll that looks some what in the black. We are going to be in the red for years. I hope that means we have a window of winning for another 5 years. Kobe wants 7 rings so he can have one more than MJ. He will never have as many as Horry. I think you can argue for him both at SF and PF, but mostly at SF. Rambis or AC Green (or Perkins late in Worthy's career) started next to him, and they were not SFs.

I think of Worthy primarily as a SF, that was also able to play spurts at PF.

here are the precise numbers from marc stein:
http://twitter.com/STEIN_LINE_HQ

Precise value of Gasol's extension w/Lakers, based on official league figures, is an even $57 million over three years starting in 2011-12

If you want to get even more specific on Pau's extension: $18,714,150 in 2011-12, $19,000,000 in 2012-13 and $19,285,850 in 2013-14

Gasol's extension also has a trade kicker. His previous contract did not. Trade kicker only applies if Pau dealt during extension, not if this season or next. (Not that he's going anywhere anytime soon anyway).

so its not a max contract...

57 mil isnt quite as cumbersome as 64.7 mil previously reported...

"The contract numbers have arrived: Gasol will officially make $57 million over his three-year extension, saying he took less money so the Lakers could allocate more toward other players over that time. Gasol, 29, could have earned an additional $7 million on his extension, which kicks in after next season.

“I’m thankful for this franchise,” Gasol said. “I’m thankful that I got traded here for whatever reason. It’s a privilege to be part of this team so I don’t mind compromising for the benefit of the team and the franchise and still get paid very, very well.”"
