Williamson docked pay for Attending Funeral?!?!??!

Post#1 » by treyZz » Fri Nov 9, 2007 12:57 am

Via wiretap.

What an absolute crock of ****!!!!

"Childress cited the cases of two players, Minnesota defensive tackle Pat Williams and Indianapolis wide receiver Reggie Wayne, who appeared in games shortly after the deaths of family members."

Wow.. What does that matter? Each person handles death differently.. I cannot believe the NFL allows this kind of **** to happen.

With that said Williamson is a huge bust.

I agree. Not to mention he had to make the funeral arrangements too didnt he? Thats more than just attending. The Vikings are disturbed, way to support your guys :noway:

I'm siding with the Vikings on this... he signed a contract and aware of the possibility. And this isn't like the NBA either where you play 82 games a season, an nfl game can affect the outcome of the entire organization

And it's Troy Williamson we're talking about. The entire Vikings wide receiver corps could not show up, and the chances of it affecting the outcome are astronomically small.

Personally, I think every cent that goes to Williamson is one cent too much, so I'm fine with this, even if it stinks of insensitivity.

you cannot be serious, nobody thinks of death when they're sitting down ready to sign a contract. usually you would operate under the assumption that people are compassionate and understanding enough for you to spend the time needed with your family.

What makes this worse to me is that Childress came out and said what he did. Saying nothing definitely looks better than saying something stupid in this case.

Didn't Childress call Marcus Robinson on Christmas day & tell him he was cut from the team? He is a scum bag.

i did not know of that, but that is classless. Childress seems like he has no heart or consideration. I agree with the other person who said they should just pay him the 25,000 cause it really is nothing to the team, they probably made millions off the game itself.

I don't understand what the Vikings are trying to prove with this move. I know Williamson has been a bust for them, but this is just horrible move on their part.

I thought the funeral was before Sunday and he spent extra time with his family.

No?

From the article.

The Minnesota Vikings have docked wide receiver Troy Williamson one game check for missing last Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers to attend the Monday funeral of his maternal grandmother.

Williamson's maternal grandmother, who helped to raise him and with whom he was very close, died last week and he returned to South Carolina, where he played a large role in arranging her funeral. He also had to make travel arrangements for several of his siblings, some of whom are in the armed services. He returned to the team on Wednesday as the Vikings began practicing for this Sunday's game against Green Bay.

Quote from Williamson:

I don't care if they would have [taken] my pay for the rest of the year, I was going home," Williamson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "It wouldn't have mattered to me."

Just really classless from the Vikings.

not to play devil's advocate here, but i don't know how many of you get grievance leave from your jobs; many of us do not. if i had to leave work for a funeral i would have to take time off. if i had no PTO saved up i would not be paid for the time i missed. since there really is no "time off" for pro athletes i can understand the vikings stance. you'd think they'd be more compassionate/reasonable here, but i don't think it's classless.

I've never heard of a company not have bereavement leave to be honest. I just don't see where the Vikings are coming from and how they feel this is a smart move on their part.

I still say it's very classless of the team.

Youd think the bad PR alone would have been a reason for them to just pay him. Especially for a team that hasnt had the best image in recent years.

In an article i read it mentioned an interesting sidenote to ponder, say this was Adrian Peterson, would the Vikings have done the same thing?

that's true, but you gotta see the difference between a regular job and a NFL one. you missing a day of work equals the loss of about 1/250 of your yearly salary. a nfl player missing a day of work equals the loss of 1/16 of his yearly salary.
