Wowza. I really need to know who the prospect is before knowing what to make of this.

Mariners beat writer on twitter said it's David Cooper and Brandon League

Makes sense, we got Brett Wallace, no room for Cooper

Heh, if it's Cooper and League, I'm down. I like League more than most and am not sold on Morrow, but there's a lot of upside there.

Morrow throws hard. Really, really hard. He also walks a tonne of batters, has been injury-prone, and it's an open question whether he's better as a closer or as a starter...his best numbers came in the former role, but obviously he has more value in the rotation. He could end up flaming out, but that's a risk worth taking if we're not giving up a top prospect.

which was also his first mlb game as a starter

If it is Cooper, I love it. The position has a better, closer prospect, and from what I've heard of him his upside was a non-platoon, poor D Overbay. Which isn't as bad as people think, but still isn't good.

If it is JP, I'm iffy on the deal. D'Arnaud is 3 years away, catching prospects flame out, and we have no passable catcher for the interm. Plus, if there is one thing we are loaded with, it is pitchers. That being said, the Jays may think they know how to deal with pitchers with diabetes from McGowan, and so think they can keep Morrow as a starter. And Morrow has more upside than JP if he's a starter.

As for League, I've defended him and am probably higher on him than most, but I also know that he is only under control til 2012, so his long term value was really just as trade bait.

if its f JP, i don't like it. I know people are frustrated with Arencibia's up and down performance in the minors and his walk rate but he can mash and his defence improved a ton. He's still pretty young and the only thing stopping from being a everyday catcher was his OBP which i think he can still improve on.

I agree that if its Cooper then it is a solid gamble. If its Arencibia I dont like it as much. I dont even like Arencibia that much but all reports suggest he may actually become a slightly above-average defensive catcher, and combined with his well above average power that makes for a useful catcher that has some value, even with the terrible plate control. Cooper isn't a total write-off but I cant see him having a whole lot of future value even if everything works out: he is a bad defender and his bat isn't anywhere near good enough to make up for that. He'll have to absolutely mash to stick it as a starting 1B.

Looks like one injury proned player for another. It will be interesting if they pass their physicals.

As a Mariner's fan I came over here to see if you knew any more than we do. And apparently you don't.

The trade is a success based on the prospect. We hope it's not JP because we have a catcher who is the catcher of the future who will be in AAA or start the season with the club. He's ready to take over, but for some reason our manager loves Rob Johnson.

If we get JP, we're all assuming that means our #2 prospect (the catcher, Adam Moore) is being traded for a 1b. I don't know anything about your prospects except Wallace and Snider (I sorta dated his older sister).

As a Mariner's fan Morrow was doomed before he threw his first pitch. Everyone wanted the local kid (Tim Lincecum) and the Lincecum Morrow comparisons are still made today. Morrow acknowledged the extra pressure. Then he flip flopped between wanting to be a starter or reliever. When we traded Putz, he said he wanted to be the go to closer. He enjoyed the role. He also cited his Diabetes as saying being a reliever it's easier to keep his blood sugar in control. Then, after he was bad he said he wanted to start. We send him down to AAA and he gets frustrated.

That being said, he has electric stuff. He can hit 97+ consistently. But all he does is throw fast balls, that was our organization's problem with him. He loved his FB and wouldn't throw breaking stuff.

One other thing, I follow all the M's writers on Twitter, and none of them have said Cooper:

There's a twitter list to follow.
