Now both teams are beyond frustrated with their kickers. I will say at least Crosby hasn't struggled as much as Folk down in Dallas. Some definite kicks that need to be made and I think at this point its all in his head. I don't see any better options available right now at this very moment but I think it is something we need to address in the off season. At the very least need to bring in some competition, I think its mostly just a matter of him being a head case now.

I remember I was pissed that Folk got the Pro Bowl nod over Crosby because Crosby led the entire NFL in scoring his rookie year.

Me too which is why I remember how good they both were as rookies :P Folk of course got it because he plays for Dallas.

As a relatively young fan, I've been spoiled by good, dependable kicking during my lifetime. This is the first year I can remember that our kicking game has truly been a problem.

There were some options listed by other posters. I'd be fine with any of them. At some point you have to send a message to your team that this level of play will NOT be tolerated. I understand what you are saying about field position, but are you under the impression that there are only 32-ish talented kickers in the world? The Packers should have a better handle on this...

I liken this situation to the Jon Ryan situation. It's the exact same thing. Ryan did very well and showed a strong leg, but then had a REALLY bad stretch where he wasn't doing anything right and some even blamed the Bears loss on him for some shanks (even though Favre was also terrible). Management panicked, picked up Frost, who ended up being the worst punter in the entire NFL by a wide margin in his games with us,and then we had to move on to Jeremy Kapinos, who is now a bottom 10 punter. Jon Ryan? He's now a top 5-10 punter in the league.

Crosby is definitely struggling. But he's not struggling and untalented. There is a big difference. There are not guys sitting in their living rooms that are for sure better making FG's that also have the leg strength Crosby does.

He needs to make a few kicks here these last few games. It is completely a confidence issue. But I can pretty much guarantee they don't make a change this season.

If i remember correctly, Ryan wasn't really even struggling that bad, but he was cut because that idiot ST coach and Ted never liked that Ryan took an extra step when punting which they feared would maybe lead to some punts getting blocked and at times Ryan kicked quite a few line drives even if punts were deeps. That's why it was such a head scratching move at the time, Ryan wasn't really punting that bad.

As for Crosby, there might not be a better option out there, but if i'm McCarthy and say in the 2nd quarter it's 4th and 5 at the 31 yard line, i'm going for it instead of trying a 48 yard FG.

Maybe all he needs is a change of scenery, pick him up Pack...

Crosby between 20-39 yards this season: 18/20
Folk between 20-39 yards this season: 11/13

Crosby from 40+: 5/12
Folk from 40+: 6/13

It could very well be that Folk needs a change of scenery and he'll do fine, but he has some obvious problems to work out right now also. He was more accurate, and from distance, than Crosby in 2007 and 2008. However, there's also no question that Crosby has the bigger leg (by a lot). Folk has 4 touchbacks on 171 kickoffs since the beginning of 2007. Crosby has 41/265. In fact, Folk hasn't even been doing kickoffs for them this season. They're both bad right now but I'd rather stick with Crosby.

These are good stats... surprising that it is closer than I thought it would be, so basically, Crosby and Folk are similar in regards to how bad they've been, except Crosby can make touchbacks happen. It doesn't seem like there has been that many for Crosby, but I guess I need to start paying more attention to the kicking game...

OT, but I never understood why NFL teams don't have kickers that can boom it out of the endzone. I had a skinny friend in hs kick it to the endzone, granted its 10 yards closer, but I would think with practice and a lot of leg strength, pro kickers could line drive it that far.

Just think how huge of an advantage knowing that your opponent would start at the 20.

It used to happen all the time then they moved the NFL kickers back what another 10 yards, I think that was somewhere around 7 years ago? I don't remember the exact timing of the change but I do remember it happening. The NFL wanted kickoff returns to be a part of the game. My guess is that if teams did find guys with crazy strong legs who could boot it out of the endzone nearly every kick that they would just move the kickoff back another 5-10 yards.
