I think it's pretty clear that Kobe is getting some extra credit for doing what he's doing with a broken finger. Commentators have been praising him for it, so maybe LeBron should break a finger or two to swing some sympathy votes his way.

BTW, prior to breaking his finger Kobe was shooting .328 (not great, but not terrible) from downtown and since he has shot .172 (5-29). Likewise, his free throw shooting has dropped from .844 to .804 since the injury.

Btw, without rounding or using the PER 36 even though LeBron plays more..

Kobe is: +.6ppg, -.014fg%, +.044ft%, -.0913p%, -1.2rpg, -3.2apg, +.9spg, -.5bpg, +.6topg

The Lakers are on pace to win 70 games, the Cavs to win 59.

Is the difference in stats really enough?

I've always wondered if the statheads would still pick LeBron for MVP if we replaced Kobe with oh....'96-'97 Jordan(who's stats are nearly identical to current Kobe in every category).

I think Kobe is playing at that type of level right now.

21-8 with Mo Williams, Shaq, and Mike Brown is more impressive than 23-4 with Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, and Phil Jackson. Not to mention he has the statistical advantages and is a flat out better player and more valuable to his team. LeBron is my MVP at this point.

Just a hint.. Player A's team won 72 games.
Player B's team in on pace to win 70.

??? really confused... since when has taking shots been a bad thing??? it's not like he shoots 40%. If he were smush parker leading the league in FGA i'd say you'd have a case. Unfortunately, he's only taking 22 shots a game. I don't think any knowledgeable basketball fan would say that's an inordinate amount of shots for a man of player B's caliber. But I would expect foolish basketball fans to think so. So good work. You should write for the washington post.

the avatar's hilarious. And I'm not a die hard kobe fan. I like the guy. Furthermore, even if I was a hardcore fan that wouldn't stop me from seeing what's obvious at this point--that at this point in the season Kobe's the MVP. Who will win it is still up for grabs but as far MVP goes for the first quarter, it's Kobe. But there's still plenty of basketball to be played.

The only thing that's ironic is when people use the word ironic when things aren't ironic.

The funny thing is that one could argue statistically that Lebron has as much, if not more, help around him than Kobe had last year. But somehow you guys are 4th in the East and 7-3 in your last 10 including losses to Memphis and a Dirk-less Mavs.

59 wins is just not impressive considering your record last season, the amount of talent you've added, your pending 4th place finish in the East, and the Lakers on pace to win 70 despite injures to their two best players.

But that's not even the half of it....
If you haven't noticed, the MVP usually goes to the years best story. Last year, your catapault to 66 wins was it. The year before it was the Lakers springboard to contention. Before that it was Nash and Dirk killing all expectations. This year there have been several great stories, Kobe's improved game, Camelo's domination, Nash's resergence etc. but you guys aren't it. In fact, the best story coming out of Cleveland is about how much worse you guys look compared to last season. That's not going to win an MVP.

and when you factor in things like home vs away, strenght of schedule, etc, the lakers project out to 59 wins, not 70.
