Salary cap update

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/11723/what-will-next-summers-salary-cap-be

With NBA gate receipts down less than anticipated, the doomsday scenario of a $6-7 million drop in the salary cap for the 2010-11 season now seems overly pessimistic. Everyone still expects the cap to go down heading into the summer of 2010 when the league will have one of its strongest free agent classes in years, but by how much?

ESPN.com has been digging around for preliminary cap projections, and here is what we have uncovered: The Miami Heat are the most conservative in their estimates, basing their planning for next summer's cap at $52 million. The New York Knicks are using $53 million as their operating number, and the New Jersey Nets are being the most optimistic, expecting the cap to come in between $54 and $55 million. The league office told teams at the Board of Governors meeting on the eve of the season opener to expect the cap to come in somewhere around the $52 million range, but agents who have been briefed on updated financial receipt figures now are using $54 million as their operating number.

The salary cap dropped from $58.68 million in 2008-09 to $57.7 million for the current season, and the league issued a memo in early July projecting that Basketball Related Income -- the formula through which the cap is calculated -- was expected to drop 2.5 to 5 percent this season, hence the doomsday scenario of a cap drop all the way down south of $51 million.

Gate receipts over the remainder of the season will impact the cap calculations going forward, so the numbers listed above are merely the best guestimates available at this time. But one thing is certain: The Knicks, Heat and Nets -- the teams who will have the most cap space -- are all hoping that ticket sales and gate receipts continue to come in stronger than originally forecast, which will give them more money to throw around when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, Carlos Boozer and a host of others become unrestricted free agents.

So if we keep Gomes, we'll have something like 17-19 million space minus slightly less than 6 million in cap holds for the 1st rounders?

That's enough to sign Gay. Gotta make a trade of some sort to bring in Pekovic though, unless we cut Gomes.

I'm not saying you're definitely doing this, but I think we have to stop believing signing Gay is a realistic scenario. $11 million might be enough, but he's going to have to want to sign here over a number of other teams with cap dollars and with Memphis showing a lot of improvement this year it's becoming more and more likely that they would match such a deal anyway.

I meant to sign him to a palatable contract. If we offered 11/year and Memphis matched, well that's fine. As for their willingness, I've seen lots of articles claiming that there's no way Memphis matches due to the owner trying to be Donald Sterling South, and others that say they believe Memphis will match any offer, so who knows? I'd be about as happy with using our cap space for a salary dump to pick up another lottery pick or some other vet wing. Luckily there are a lot of paths for Kahn to choose that I'd be relatively happy with.

Memphis is cheap, and I really question them caring about winning with Zach Randolph on the team.

He IS the reason they are winning. I know Wallace gets lambasted for a lot of his deal, but trading for Randolph was much better decision then paying $10m per for Lee or Milsap. Randolph has bee great for them.

If they're so cheap, why did they even trade for Zach Randolph?

We're not going to get Gay for pennies. The truth is we are going to have to overpay if we want him. If it was ever a problem, they would simply trade Randolph or Gay instead of nothing.

Would all parties involved understand the comedy of a Gay/Love hook-up? Chris Wallace needs to understand the hours of cheap juvenile laughs I would get out of that...and even already have.

I know he's playing better, but he's still Zach Randolph.

It doesnt really matter if we get gay or not. We need to make an offer that includes a nice juicy trade kicker. We'll 2.josh Smith him and make him unmovable for when mem matches.

I'd be OK with overpaying a little for Gay if he was a little better 3pt shooter. Having Flynn/Brewer/Gay as our perimeter is a little worrisome...some ridiculous highlight dunks on a nightly basis with those 3, sure, but pretty questionable perimeter shooting. Love would be our best 3pt shooter in the starting line-up...though I guess he is right now, too.

If the size of contract he is signed to is a concern, as is the trade kicker, wouldn't it be just as much of a concern for us as Memphis?

or do you mean that you would be fine with having the kicker if it means it discourages mem from matching?
