Kobe has a "great" supporting cast. I mean, outside of the starters the bench scored all of 17 points.

Then there is this. For as much as Kobe's supporting cast has been hyped, outside of Pau, and Artest...who has shown up? When's the last time anyone saw Bynum...where the hell is that guy? I can count on one hand how many times the Lakers bench has outscored the opposing teams bench. It's starting to get embarrassing. I'm on the verge of wanting to see Adam Morrison get more minutes to see if he can do anything.

I mean, really. The Lakers starters got whipped by LeBron and his supposedly "inferior" supporting cast. The bench got whipped even more so by Cleveland's bench. So I don't know why Kobe's supporting cast gives him a supposedly huge advantage in the MVP race.

Actually, I'd argue that his supporting cast hurts him pretty badly at times. When Gasol can't score on Varejao and an old Big Z, Bynum's game falls off the face of the earth, Odom refuses to assert himself in any way on offense, and Fisher and Artest build houses with their bricklaying, Kobe is forced to take on the Cavs defense alone. Therefore, shooting 34% against a great defensive team, when your amazing supporting players disappear, shouldn't bring Kobe that far down in the MVP standings. He had 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals as well. For a guy who has been criticized for not contributing in "other ways" when his shots aren't falling, that's pretty good.

And like you said, where the hell is Bynum? I'm absolutely sick of people rating this guy based on his talent/potential. Same goes for Odom, who is overrated by the media too at times. Fans say that the Lakers are loaded, with a 20-10 C in Bynum. I agree that they are loaded, but not because of Bynum. Because of Kobe and Pau, and Artest to a lesser extent. But even Artest's contributions haven't been great. They've been good, but not All NBA level or anything like that. His shooting has been awful, as has Kobe's and all of the other Lakers "shooters". So to say that Kobe has an unbelievable supporting cast is hyperbole to say the least - they're good, but definitely not a contender without Kobe on the team.

Anybody else feel like Pau has a tendency to disappear against physical teams? He got shoved away from the block time after time on offense - rendering him pretty ineffective against Cleveland. Same goes for earlier in the year against Denver, Nene and Martin (hell, even Birdman) can push him around.

According to Mark Stein Gasol is the MVP of the West thus far. I tend to agree with him. They are 16-2 with Gasol and when Gasol isn't having a good game they aren't the same team (see Cavs game). He leads the league in differential between Offensive Rating and Defensive Rating. His 24 point/11 rebound/6 block game yesterday doesn't surprise us any more due to how great he has become.

My MVPs thus far

did anyone actually read stein's reasoning?

He said the clincher was the Pau signed an extension making it all the more likely that Bryant would sign one.

Essentially, he said Pau's selection came down to him guaranteeing that the best player in the world would still be on the lakers long term.

More telling was his selection of Howard as East's MVP.

Everyone knows Kobe is the MVP.

oh and last night proved it again.

Pau misses two freebies that would've ended the game in regulation. Bryant, injured elbow and all, has to bail them out in double OT.

Lakers would be hard pressed to make the playoffs without Kobe.

Nowitzki has his Mavericks leading the southwest division at 21-9 in the west. For all this talk about James being in this with Bryant, Dirk is just as much in it as anyone else. Why is he being so overlooked?

Really nothing to say about MVP at this point, Cleveland, LA and Dallas could all finish 10 games away from each other, and the MVP usually comes down to who has the best record, all could change with one injury in 3 months!

I honestly don't think Stein was being serious. He also said Dwight Howard is the MVP of the East! He was trying to create some buzz with his articles, and what better way to do it then to nominate two candidates in their respective conferences that haven't a shot in hell at the MVP.

I honestly think everyone wrote him off after his first round debacle against Golden State. Not only that, Carmelo is clearly a better player at this point and he's making his own arguments. Furthermore, when you are living in a new golden era with players like Kobe, Lebron, Melo, Nash, Wade, Bosh, CP3, Deron and Nowitski...it's pretty hard to stand out when you're not even the best player at your position.

1a. Lebron
1b. Kobe

3. Melo
4. Dirk

As much as I love Bosh, I don't think he's better than Dirk.

To be honest, I've never really thought about it, but I'd probably take Dirk over Bosh. You can make a STRONG argument for Bosh however; the one thing that stands out immediately is Bosh is a way better rebounder. Other things being equal...I think Bosh might have it.

i really don't get why so many people, including nba.coms mvp race, got dwight howard that high

ok, he is a beast on defense - so he earns the DPOY award.

but most valuable? that guy wont see the ball in the 4th quarter offensively, maybe he earns himself a put back. but he can not carry his team, can not will his team to victory. he is a liability on offense with his free throw percentage and limited range.

How is Wade ahead of Melo? Why is Howard 3rd? Where did Roy come from? Weakest MVP least I've seen anywhere.

1. Lebron (ok)
2. Kobe (ok)
3. Howard (WTF?)
4. Roy (WWWWTTTFFF??????)
5. Wade (??????)
6. Melo (?????)
7. Dirk (??????????)
8. Nash
9. Tyreke Evans (I have no words)
10. Durant

Roy's December: 28pts, 5rebs, 5asts, 47%fg
Melo: 30, 6, 3, 46%fg
Wade: 27, 6, 7, 45%fg
Kome: 30, 6, 5, 48%fg

List looks decent; my only gripe is the absence of CP3 in the top 10.
