It was on Versus. Caps won 4-2 by the way. They are 13-4-1 I believe.

Here's a question for the hardcore fans out there:

I haven't been able to see many games, but try to follow the box scores. And it seems like every game, the Caps get the benefit of the calls for the first two periods, with lots of power plays - but then in the 3rd, the calls go against them and they play a lot of shorthanded minutes. I think this has been a factor in several of the games in which they've lost a 3rd Period lead and wound up in OT or shootouts.

So the question is - do you think this is a fluke, referee bias, or a case of the Caps taking dumb penalties at bad times?

I first noticed it in the first game against the Flyers. I assumed it was a case of the Flyers trying to play physical early, not caring about the early penalties, in an attempt to get under the Caps' skin and goad them into penalties when it mattered most. Is this a strategy teams are employing against the Caps?

I'm not a hardcore fan by any stretch but I think the Caps make a lot of dumb penalties particularly Alexander Semin.

I'm hoping not to hear the old ACL-MCL-meniscus combination platter, but really expecting the worst from the replay.

Caps are at the top of the East after beating the Devils last night.

Also, they signed Semin to a 1 year extension. These next two summers are going to be very interesting. Backstrom is due for an extension, and Tomas Fleishmann is due for a new contract and he's been playing very well for them. This is where McPhee earns his money. I think Ovie's contract was more Ted than McPhee.

Wasn't GM GM pretty much regarded a mediocre at best (Ernie Grunfeld level) GM until Ted gave him a direction (trade all veterans with trade value for picks)?

I'm not much of a hockey fan, but I find myself preferring to watch the Caps over the Wiz now. Their skill level amazes me, and they don't rely on thugs. Still, I don't see other teams messing with O. And is there any other defenseman in the NHL with skills like Green? I guess he's gotta show it in the playoffs this season.

Not sure. I haven't followed McPhee that closely until the last couple of years or so. Considering how bad the Caps were earlier in this decade, he couldn't possibly screw up their draft picks. It would take a real idiot to do that. He needs to extend the guys I mentioned though, especially Backstrom. No excuse, Theodore is coming off the books as is Nylander so that's like $10 million off the cap from those two players.

I'd bring back Theo though. The youngster who's name I can't spell is pretty good, but he's only 21.
