MIN - UTA - Some other guy

Post#1 » by shrink » Mon Dec 28, 2009 2:57 pm

I'm not in favor of this, but I think its an interesting though.

UTA's in a tough spot with Boozer. They'd like to trade him to get talent and some 2009-10 cap relief, but they can't get full value because he could walk next season. A potential contender doesn't want to pay a fortune for a one-year window. Al Jefferson would draw better offers because of the length of his contract.

MIN might be in a position where trading Al Jefferson isn't such a bad thing longterm, if they can get value. I'm not a Boozer fan, or particularly like the idea of running with two PF's, but imagine this one:

MIN GIVES: Jefferson
MIN GETS: Boozer + NYK 1st

UTA GIVES: Boozer + NYK 1st
UTA GETS: Nice assets + 2009 cap relief

THIRD TEAM GIVES: Nice assets + 2009 cap relief
THIRD TEAM GETS: Jefferson

Boozer and Jefferson have similar offensive production. MIN doesn't need 2009 cap space, so they have the luxury of waiting until this summer to trade Boozer, perhaps with an extension in a sign-and-trade (say, MIA for cap space + "stuff?"). NYK pick could be anything .. it's currently tied for 6-8, but it could be 15, if they make the playoffs in the lackluster eastern conference.

Again, I'm nto a fan of this, but it sidesteps some of the problems that UTA faces, and may provide a good return.

I wouldn't bite on that.

Boozer will leave.

But the Wolves would have more money under the cap and the NYK pick. Even if Boozer left, you could spend the money on someone else. Of course that doesn't mean I'd do it.

I don't quite understand why Utah is using NYK pick to move Boozer though.

You got what I was thinking.

UTA may do it so they can get full value. They can't wait for summer of 2010 because they'd want 2009-10 cap space, so they only get to see Boozer as a potential half-season rental.

Now, I don't know if its worth the NYK pick to upgrade the trade value of the Boozer rental to Jefferson, but it does solve some problems. For MIN, there is less downside if Boozer walks, though I'd expect a sign-and-trade, since he likes getting paid. Also, keep in mind that a S&T could include some cap space coming back.

Chicago seems like the most likely fit given that they need low post scoring and have an insured contract in Jerome James. They'd obviously have to give something else to Utah.
NYK has Mobley, but they're not a good fit for this kind of trade. Harpring is other insured contract that I know of, but he probably can't go back to Utah before the trade deadline.

Knicks pick doesn't look sexy anymore, but Jazz will not trade it to move Boozer unless they are getting Jefferson, Boozer should be going to Chicago here, not Minny. Why do you want Boozer here? he makes no sense here, unless you want to sign and trade him in the summer.

How about Wolves-Jazz-Hornets?

We get Okafor, NY pick
Jazz get Jefferson
Hornets get Boozer(cap relief while saving face, Boozer is still a big name)

Lets somehow include Ariza coming to us and assemble the historically worst shooting wing duo the nba has ever seen.

Hilariously, it is not even Brewer's fault because Ariza is even worse than Brewer in FG% (who has improved a lot  )

Ariza is shooting 37.5 % while attempting 16 FG/game 8-)

Anyway, I like both players.

Ariza worked in the triangle, but he'll continue to struggle in Houston. The Lakers' version is great for playing to players' strengths and hiding their weaknesses. Maybe that's happening with Corey. At the beginning of the year he was shooting the ball of the dribble and now he is getting set shots and easy shots in transition.

Sort of what I'm thinking.

This IS the Jazz getting Jefferson, but since he doesn't fit, they get the VALUE of Jefferson from a third team.

MIN can afford to trade Boozer this summer, while the Jazz can't wait that long -- it costs them an additional $13 million if they can't move Boozer and get back some 2009-10 cap relief.

Anyway, I certainly agree on the Knicks pick, and like I said, I'm not a fan of the deal (note the lack of effort). However when it struck me, I found it interesting enough to bring over to show you guys to discuss.

NYK Booze (Gallo Curry)
Min Gallo Jeffries Pick Landry (Jefferson)
Uta Jefferson (Pick Booze)

But then I realized NYK assumes they're going to get James who wouldn't like Boozer...

Woah, I just misread the trade. I thought Utah was getting Jefferson.

I'd have to pass. You'd have to be sure that the Knicks pick would atleast be top 5 to get someone decent to replace Al and you just couldn't guarantee that at this point.
