Another MIN-NOH

There has been some speculation that New Orleans pulled out because they have another deal in place involving Brown. When a deal couldn't be worked out last night, Minnesota turned to Phoenix and pulled the trigger on this deal.

Can we still get in on that? This works financially:

MIN GETS: Hilton Armstrong + Devin Brown + Sean Marks ($4,734,267)

NOH GETS: Olesky Pecherov + Sasha Pavlovic + Nathan Jawai ($3,707,640)

This deal creates a TPE so beautiful that it nearly maxes out the salary decrease within 125% + $100,000 for the Hornets .. in fact, its only $2,500 inside the range. The Hornets subtract a little over $1 mil from their payroll, so $2 mil with lux. They also benefit because they pull within $2 mil of the luxury threshold, or well within the land of other team's TPEs.

The deal also adds some needed size to the Hornets.

But what would we want in return? I think its tough to ask a cash-strapped team for cash, though they may be willing to pay it. If we included $3 mil cash ($5 mil total?), could we get a pick swap between the 2010 NOH pick and the UTA pick? They may not mind avoiding the cap hold next year. Maybe a future protected 1st?

Yeah....The Wolves need some extra incentive here. Not sure what though.

I don't see why we need more incentive....we get the better players clearly...

I think the most likely incentive is to split the $1 mil in lux tax recovered on the deal.

NOH SENDS $1.5 mil in cash

MIN GAINS $500,000 (Pays $1 mil in payroll, Receives $1.5 mil in cash)
NOH GAINS $500,000 (Receives $1 mil in lower payroll + $1 mil in lux taxes - $1.5 mil in cash)

NOH still has to love the deal, because they get to within $2 mil of the luxury threshold. That's within the TPE range of many teams, so if they can shed the $2, they pick up a prize worth $8.5 desperately needed millions.

It kind of seems like dealing for the sake of dealing from Minnesota's end though.

Man, I lower myself to make a trade to improve our 2009-10 talent, for all you guys that want to see wins, and this is the thanks I get? <jk>

Seriously though, it does do one thing that I wouldn't like -- ties up a lot of our less important puzzle pieces that could be required for a deadline deal. These guys wouldn't be able to be combined in a trade for am ore expensive player until after the Feb 19 trade deadline.

We all appreciate your work shrink :D

I just personally don't see the point really. Brown isn't all that good, they've already got an upgrade to Armstrong in Hollins (although that's not hard) and Marks shouldn't even be in the NBA. I get it helps them out but what does it do for Minnesota?
