The Pacers missed the boat

We totally missed out on Eric Maynor. The Thunder just acquired him for peanuts basically.

So they took on Harpring's contract of $6.5 mill for the remainder of the season (Harpring isn't actually even joining the team), and they get a promising young PG in Eric Maynor. Really we couldn't have given up one of our international players that we will never bring over, and fill a huge void for our team? That's disheartening to say the least. Maynor was one of the 5 or so guys that I was really pulling for us to get in the draft.

Problem is we already have 4 PG (well 3.5 with Deiner).
I would have liked to see us get Maynor though but I don't think Utah would have wanted any contracts in return as they are probably trying to save money

OKC was under the cap, and was able to absorb the salaries without sending any back.

We are over the cap, and we would have had to send back salaries, which would have completely defeated the purpose of the deal for Utah, who was looking to shed salaries.

There was no way that the Pacers could have made a deal for Maynor that fulfilled Utah's wishes.

Maybe we can pull something like this off in 2011. Isn't this pretty much like the Thunder buying a 1st round draft choice for 6 million (Harpring's salary) and Utah selling a 1st rounder for 12 million (Harpring's salary + the luxury tax)? Given that Maynor looks like he'll be a player a pretty solid move for OC and given the value of late 1st round picks on draft day a remarkable move for Utah. Also from a Utah fan's perspective a much easier move to stomach when you are sitting with the Knicks first round pick.

I agree with Count on this the Pacers couldn't offer what OKC did for Maynor which was to eat the salary of Harpring. So in effect OKC got Maynor to take the salary of Harpring from Utah. Since the Jazz are way over the Tax Level at a total payrol of $82 million the $7.8 million of Maynor $1.3 and Harpring $6.5 is double that a savings to the Jazz of $15.6 million. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

That's one of the nice things about being under the cap you can take a player or 2 and get paid to do it, all you have to do is give them some Euro dude you hold the rights too like Stanko or Lobrek.

It's great timing for OKC to get this deal done also. They would now be able to flip Harpring's contract again before the deadline if they so choose.

They're getting quite a lot of assets.

Well in order to get deals like that you have to clear salary. So do you want to dump Murphy, Dunleavy, Foster and TJ for expiring contracts?

How about McGrady he's on the block. Or that Big Z trade with the Cavs that they keep kicking around.

If you can get under the cap you can do all kinds of things and get paid.

OKC started with nothing but a supplemental draft that allowed them to cherry-pick favorable contracts, followed by numerous top picks. They are gonna have to commit to an enormous contract with Durant soon, so their flexibility will reduce somewhat.

Maynor was a good p/u though.

Maynor is a nice piece; but Lawson is better. Perhaps Pacers should have taken him in the draft.

I don't want to belabor the point, but Tyler is #8 in the latest ESPN rookie rankings, just one spot under Lawson, and he's still being limited because of his shin. Obviously, Ty Lawson is great and DGrangeRx33 wil be the first to say it, but we did what we did with the information we had.

Also, Ty Lawson gets to spread it around to guys like Melo and JR Smith and Nene as opposed to Dunleavy, Dahntay, and Hibbert.

OKC probably also got cash to cover Harpring's salary that was not covered by insurance. Not a bad way to use cap space.

Remember, we also had cap space this offseason using it on Jones and Watson. Maynor may end up as a starter, but do not think his production will far outshadow these two players.

No, we didn't have cap space. We had the MLE, which could not be used in this manner.
