Love him, but Russell = Alonzo in the modern game.

This statement is obscenely incorrect. Russ could jump so high he hung and looked down into the rim. He was quick as a small forward with incredible length. He was the smartest player of all time. He'd destroy Mourning.

C'mon Gant, even you underestimate Russell, although you did your best.
By the way, Gant, Happy Holidays, missed your posts. I know the board has, as well.

Captain Caveman doesn't have a clue, but here's a hint.

Imagine the faster player in the NBA. Used to be Iverson, several years ago.

Now make that player 6' 10",
able to high jump 6' 11.5" (backed out to let 2 guys go to Melbourne since Russell was
already going on the basketball team, had he taken that jump, he could have
been the first 7 foot high jumper, although he would have knocked someone off the team),

with the BEST ANTICIPATION that I've ever seen.

Russell would wreck havoc on the entire opposing team.
Garnett and Sheed are slow motion in comparison.

great stuff guys - I had figured caveman was clueless with the bad Model T/Ferrari analogy

The other thing Russell had was intensity, he made KG look like he plays the game casually.
Full of sound and fury; signifying nothing

Whatever, guys.

Wilt aside, Russell played in an era where plodding 6'9" white guys played center.

Darius Songaila would have been an All-Star in the 1960s.

You're just flat incorrect. Overall the center position in the 60s was better than it is today: Russell, Wilt, Thurmond, Bellamy, Unseld, Reed, Lucas, Beaty etc. (Not a plodder in the bunch except Bellamy later in his career.) Those guys were good. You usually played a strong center in the 60s unlike today where you only do once in a while.

C'mon, Darius Songalia would not have made a roster in the 60s.

You've got a lot of stiffs in the NBA today that would not have made a team in the 1960's.

Keep in mind that with an 8 team league, you only had 7 opponents for Russell's first 4 seasons,
8 for seasons 5 thru 9, 9 in his 10th season, 11 in his 12 season and 13 opponents in his final season.

These African Americans might be offended by your comment,
for some reason you don't want to give credit to their heritage.

All heights are barefoot, without shoes, ROUNDED DOWN,
before the modern era of wearing 2 inch Nike pumps and ROUNDING UP.

7 1 3/8" WIlt Chamberlain - entered NBA at age 22 in 1960, territorial pick
6' 11.5" Nate Thurmond (badder than anyone playing the middle right now,
would tower over Dwight Howard, who's pre-draft measurement was 6' 9" barefoot) - 1963 #3 pick
6' 11" Walt Bellamy (entered NBA in 1961, #1 pick) - Alonzo Mourning plus 2" in height,
plus more reach
6' 9" Zelmo Beatty (1962 #2 Pick)

And, some who were not African American, but caucasian, although not necessarily slow
7' Darrell Imhoff (a modern day Brad Miller (in Miller's prime) -entered NBA in 1960, #5 pick
7' Mel Counts (a modern day Tyson Chandler with a jump shot) - 1964 #9 pick

The shorter guys in the middle like Jerry Lucas and Willis Reed were extremely skilled
shooters and passers, with high basketball IQ's.

"Darius Songaila would have been an All-Star in the 1960s."

Nominated for most ridiculous statement of the year on Real GM!

The idea that Bill Russell wouldn't cut the mustard in today's NBA is abjectly absurd. Take any big man from the 'modern' era that was known for their defensive prowess (Ben Wallace, Dikembe Mutumbo, Alonzo etc.) and they wouldn't come close to what Russell did on the defensive end. In today's NBA, Bill Russell would be putting up triple doubles with regularity. (points, rebounds and blocks).

I hate how openly the players fraternize with each other. In fact thats one of the things I sort of like about our team. For the most part they seem to have a pretty cold attitude towards opponents. KG, Rondo, and Perk in particular.

Also I hate how since the hand check rules were instituted every old-timer has bemoaned it, saying in the old days blah blah blah. BS! I watch way too much ESPN Classic and In the old days guys pretty much gave offensive players what by todays standards would be an amazing amount of space. It was really only circa the Riley Heat/JVG Knicks era did the players start really handchecking, think the BS that Lindsey Hunter gets away with whenever he steps on the court, and everyone pretty much agrees that was going over the line. Yeah they are more careful about flagrants, but the play-to-play contact is way more than the bird and pre-bird era and thankfully less than the the post Heat-Knicks era.

I can understand not liking this....I don't mind seeing some guys getting along because you know alot of these guys are friends off the court, I just don't like it when they go overboard like they're taking in a show at the Apollo, doubled over in laughter.... it's like hey brickhead, try to focus, ok?... sign of the times, I guess

Cyclical wrote:* Mark Stein rankings. It's true I can't stand most of the writers on ESPN and I think Hollinger's ranking is silly as well but at least it's not a fickle opinion-based ranking but rather a geeky pure stat ranking. Stein just comes off as a schizophrenic who seems to have a different opinion every week. What is the point? Are the Celtics really the best team one week, than the 4th best the following week? Useless.

Good god I've never really thought of how ridiculous that ranking system really is until you pointed it out, and then what I saw today...

RANK (LAST WK): 1 (7), TEAM: CAVALIERS, REC: 24-8
Sometimes we get it wrong and this is one of those times. Ever since we saw the Cavs lose to the Dirk-less Mavs in person and suggested they wouldn't go higher than No. 4 in the near future, they've been ruthless.

They beat the Lakers and they magically hop from 1 to 7?! We beat the Magic and lose an obvious letdown game against the Clippers (still without Pierce) and we don't rise in the rankings AND the team that we have beaten on their home court this season and still have a better record than is now ahead of us?! What is this ****?

My Pet Peeves:

"The NBA Cares" commercials. I can't stand the fact that the league goes out of its way to show how great these guys are. I cheer for players because they're helping their teams win. I could care less that Dwight Howard went to Africa to help some kids.

Lack of free speech - you get dinged a bunch of money when you complain about refs, even though it's obvious that they sometimes do a horrific job. Like Andrew Bogut said - "It's not cool to tell the truth anymore". And now Nate Robinson gets fined because his agent demanded a trade? David Stern and Stu Jackson need to retire.

NBA's obvious cover-up of the officiating - I just read on hoopshype that the Celtics were advised to scold Ray Allen and Rasheed regarding their comments about the Donaghy scandal. However, no fine was given. So let me get this straight Mr. Stern - you'll fine Rasheed/Doc when they complain about refs, you'll fine Nate Robinson when his agent demands a trade, but yet you won't fine Sheed again when he mentions the possibility that Donaghy wouldn't be capable of rigging games all by himself? Uh, sounds like the NBA doesn't want to lend anymore credibility to Donaghy's accusations, which leads me to believe that there is definitely some truth to the whole situation.

On the evolution of the NBA player.....I love watching the modern athleticism but no one can shoot anymore. When Bird's C's were winning championships, the TEAM shot over 50%.

Completely sick of hearing Hubies dribble. We're not first time NBA viewers. The guy sounds senile now.

The NBA ticket requiring you to watch the home teams announcers. (I could go on for days regarding MLB's blackouts).

Players complaining. Did they forget they make millions. Are they so stupid that they think they benefit from it. The fines for technicals should be randomly awarded to the fans in attendance in $1000 increments.

PA noise while the game is going on.

Jump balls.

The number of fouls called on pussy moving screens out at the 3-pt line. Yet you mug players under the basket.

Flopping. It should be handled like it is in hockey. Flopping should be an unsportsmanlike technical or foul.

While I agree that I'm sick of players complaining, the last thing we need to do is encourage refs giving out technicals. We already know that refs, for whatever reason, seem to think that they're part of the show and that fans pay money to see them do dramatic gestures when signalling a charge or block. Allowing refs to award prizes to fans would exacerbate this problem. I could see Dick Bavetta and Joey Crawford T'ing up the road team to the point where they'd only be left with 5 players on the court, while all the coaches and remaining players were all in the showers.

I couldn't agree with you more on the flopping though. If the refs can use instant replay on 3 pointers during commercial breaks, would it really be that hard to review flops and assess technical fouls too? If this rule was ever put into effect, Manu Ginobili and Chris Paul would probably be able to beat Rasheed Wallace's record for most Ts in a season before the All-Star break.

Going out on a limb here.....

HATE watching free throws. Go to the hockey system. If you foul someone, your team goes shorthanded for a minute and the offended player goes one-on-one against the on court player of his choice.

Move the 3-pt line out further and widen the court to accomondate it.

Caveman...you are sorta right there....(excepting the Songalia reference)...

The thing that matters about Russ is the fact that he almost singlehandedly changed the game....he also changed what hoop fans thought about black players in sport....He was dynamic, exciting and always a champion....every time he stepped on to the court...

He was my first black superhero athelete....And he made it easier for every black athelete who followed....

I'll always remember (as a child of the fifties) hearing Johnny Most scream (in total amazement on the radio) as Russell "stuffed it"....

I could just picture this happeneing in my mind...and I could feel a chill creep up my spine!

I wanted in the worst way to see an NBA game!

Russ was a star before Wilt....and when Wilt showed up on the scene, every battle between the two was special!!!.... the equivelant of an NBA style superbowl if you will....and 9 times out of ten, good defence always beat good offence....

Put either one of these guys in their prime out on the court today and they would still be stars....perhaps to a lesser degreee because of numbers...but they would still bring it every night!

I share many sentiments that have already been mentioned, but I would like to add one.

TV studio hosts trying to make more out of injuries than there needs to be. Or guys like Donny Marshall saying, "I don't believe them" when asked about KGs knee not being hurting. They are drama queens (Tanquay literally) and it should stop. I feel I cannot even watch any type of pre/post game show.

Oh, and any sideline reporters. I just want one coach to smack a sideline reporter when asked during the game how things are going. Just once and I would be in eternal bliss.
