Elite D

Post#1 » by Ayt » Mon Nov 12, 2007 2:18 pm

There was a lot of talk of our defense being great coming into the season and some people haven't felt like that has shown up on the field. After the game yesterday, we are currently #2 in points allowed behind only Pittsburgh. Its been years since we have had a defense this good and this complete.

Yea, I was skeptical before the season and a bit let down when it started.

Now I'm a believer. This unit is good.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that we have a top 10 defense, but I don't know if i'd call it elite. To me elite is top 3 in the league, and I don't think we are there yet. Keep in mind that we were playing a team that had Brooks Bollinger as their starting QB, and the Turd as their leading reciever in the game.

True, but I am not talking about only last game. Over the course of a season points allowed is IMO the best barometer of how good a D really is and through 9 games we are 2nd.

The only two teams to score over their season average in points against us are Chicago and KC.

We need to extend Corey Williams. Our depth on our D-Line is critical. Harrell may or may not work out but right now we have the youngest team in the league and plenty of cap space and no other starters that will be free agents after this year.

I wish I knew what the deal with Williams is. He's a productive pass rusher on the interior and guys that can get to the QB from the DT position don't grow on trees. He's only 27 so he's got years left. He's gotten better each season. You would have thought he'd have a new contract a long time ago. It's very strange that he doesn't.

Some other key defensive stats. We are 2nd in 3rd down percentage allowed behind only NE at 31%. We are tied for 3rd in sacks.

I've been wondering the same thing, he clearly is our best interior pass rusher and not some big liability vs the run.

3rd in completion % allowed.

This is a top five unit, if you look at pretty much every stat and mix them together.

I don't think they're "elite" yet, but they sure as hell like to smack people around with an attitude and who have now shown that they can shut people out.

I just hope we can keep this kind of D up when AH and CW start to decline.

Kampman is a legend....hes a defender right? :)

I have only just started following NFL this season probably from a month ago and without knowing any results and who was good or bad for some strange reason (probably because it was the only team that came to mind) I decided to be a Packer fan and I havent been dissapointed. Kampman is my fav player, god knows why I just decided to go with that.

The defence has been pretty good especially because of the shutout.....I dont know much about the start of the season.
