Should 49'ers give up on Alex Smith?

i think it's time. it's clear that he's a bust. plus, next season's draft has a lot of young talented QBs. i think 49'ers should move on and dump alex smith. he sucks.

Hes had 3 different offensive coordinators in three years, is only 23 years old and his recievers suck balls. He still has potential and the niners would be dumb to dump him off.

The guy that needs to go is Vernon Davis. For being touted as one of the greatest athletes ever, he sucks. So much for the 4.38 speed. Third round picks are outplaying him.

He's shown a few flashes of light, but hasn't quite been able to stay in the light. I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but they have suffered quite a few injuries and he really has no "go-to-guy".

Alex needs more time and needs a good foundation around him. IMO, he deserves another three year with a stable team around him. It's not fair to sale Alex short at this point, so I hope the 49ers continue to believe in him and build around him.

But regardless, San Fransico certainly hasn't given Alex Smith a good environment to work in.
Though I worry that, if this continues onto next season, it's very likely that he'll enter into the "What you see is what you get" phase of his career without much development.

My wife was watching the game last night with me. She knows nothing about Smith's background or draft status. After the first 3-4 49ers drives, she turns to me and asks "Did Charlie Frye change his name to Smith?"

there is no way they should give up on alex smith. under the right coordinater i believe he could be a solid starting QB, i.e. under Norv Turner last year he showed some progress and if Turner had stayed Smith would be putting up better numbers. He is only 23 years old, most QB's, there are a few exceptions, don't show significant process in the pros until they are 24 or 25 so i think they should give him at least another season or 2 and continue to build around him.

At first I thought he was in a bad situation but watching the game last night, he has serious confidence issues. Very David Carr esque.

He doesn't throw downfield nor does he place the ball in tight spots. I don't know if thats coaching or what but he doesn't trust whats put around him and he doesn't trust his own abilities.
