OT - When you throw a football...

...do you grip it with at least a few fingers across the laces? Hand size and finger length will obviously vary for everyone, but any serious thrower will have a few fingers across the laces, right? Right?

My pinky and ring finger are partially across the laces. I'll ask my brother tonight. He was 2nd in all of college football this season in passing yards so I'm sure he's got a fine way of throwing the ball.

Smith's hand-size has been questioned, though that's a funky way of holding the ball I have to think.

It's a very funky way to grip the ball; first time I've seen that so I was kind of being sarcastic when I asked my question in my initial post.

I was taught by my dad very early on when I was a wee little toddler to have at least your pinky and ring finger across the laces. I've tried throwing the ball like the way Smith is gripping it, but could never throw as tight a spiral; it just doesn't feel right in my hand.

And if anyone is curious since we're kind of on the topic, but I believe the way the NFL determines hand-size is to measure from the tip of your pinky to the tip of your index finger.

Because I have an incredible amount of time to waste here at work today, I just had someone measure mine and it came out 9 3/4" - not too bad!

When I was little I remember reading an SI for Kids article that said some TE's hand measurement was 1 ft.

I'm sure DB's brother can comment better than I, but I played QB in HS and went to a fair amount of QB camps...was always taught (depending on hand size) to have your pinky and ring finger part way across the laces, your index finger pointing toward the tip of the football, your thumb (if using a college or HS ball) inside of the stripped lines (away from the tip) and enough room to have "air" in the palm of your hand...

if that makes any sense...

weird photo...don't know if he does that normally...

That's how I was taught.
